Story
In a small Arizona town, a man counts his blessings: a loving wife, two teenage daughters, and a job that allows him to work at home. Then "The Store" announces plans to open a local outlet, which will surely finish off the small downtown shops. His concerns grow when "The Store's" builders ignore all the town's zoning laws during its construction. Then dead animals are found on "The Store's" grounds. Inside, customers are hounded by obnoxious sales people, and strange products appear on the shelves.

From the mind of the man Stephen King calls "a master of the macabre", comes a brilliant new collection of no-punches-pulled horror stories, some never-before-collected and many originals that have never been published anywhere before. Bentley Little can take the innocuous, twist it around, and write a story that will change your way of thinking. Walking Alone: Short Stories is a shining example of his talent to scare you, creep you out, and make you shudder.

Frank's gaze was oddly confusing, as if he was attempting to discern the proper way to behave because he didn't know how to respond in a human manner. Since Frank obviously wasn't an alien, young Daniel thought maybe the man was crazy. In the end, Daniel would learn the terrifying truth about Frank Watkins. Publisher's Summary
Bram Stoker award-winner Bentley Little cordially invites you to The Resort.
Welcome to The Reata, an exclusive spa isolated in the Arizona desert. Please ignore the strange employees and that unspeakable thing in the pool. And when guests start disappearing, pretend it isn't happening. Enjoy your stay, and relax. Oh...and lock yourself in after dark.
Opulent doesn't begin to describe the Arizona getaway where Lowell Thurman, his wife Rachel, and their three young sons have come for one glorious week. Everything at The Reata is perfect - although Rachel is a bit unnerved by the openly lustful gaze of one of the gardeners, something she doesn't mention to Lowell. Nor does he tell her about the frightening sensation he has in the pool of hands clutching at him, trying to pull him under. After all, when you're in paradise, a few glitches shouldn't spoil the fun.
But the good times come to a screeching halt, when, to the Thurmans' horror, guests begin to disappear. What's happening at the resort? Evil, ancient, and cruel. And unless they can stop it, the Thurmans will be forced to sacrifice at its altar....
Explicit violence.

Very good haunted hotel book.
I enjoyed the Resort. I never found myself getting bored and many times I would walk my dogs longer so I could continue listening to the story. Its the usual Bentley Little story where crazy stuff starts to happen to normal people in what should be a normal location. There were some creepy parts and a few times I laughed out loud. I am a big fan of David Stifel. Hes an excellent narrator and he did not disappoint with his narration of the Resort. I definitely recommend this book to people who like horror and Stephen King fans.

Too strange
This is the 3rd Bentley Little book I’ve read and probably the last. There were too many loose ends (what happened to Patrick?, why all the horrendously graphic sexual activities and torture?, and what of the sick games?, etc.) How did any of this tie into the rejuvenation of the older resort?, etc.). What kind of person thinks up this stuff???
Prior books read The Mailman and The Store. This was very much like The Store — a lot of sexual stuff and people just going with the flow rather than fighting back.

dark humor
I've always considered Littles writing more dark ironic humor than horror, due to his pointed blasting of traditional institutions. the characters act so bizarrely that it has to be interpreted as outlandish humor.

Full of dark humor but too long winded...
The resort by Bentley Little was entertaining. The craziness of what these poor vacation-goers went though and the unbelievable things that they encountered and saw and were encouraged to do made me laugh out loud at times. This is dark humor folks. Like spontaneous abortion in the toilet next door dark humor. I enjoy some dark humor, so that didn't bother me at all. I mean, this story was just funny. Why didn't I give it five stars then? Well, to be totally honest, I had a difficult time getting through this novel. As much as I enjoyed the humor in it, it just went on and an and there were some parts that really dragged. For a thirteen hour book, that's rough. I think that there was a lot of stuff that could have been taken out to have made this novel really move along without taking away from the story at all. That being said, if you like Bentley Little and/or dark humor horror books, then I would definitely recommend this book. I wouldn't hesitate to listen to another Bentley Little novel if I had the chance to read some of the reviews to make sure that they didn't have tons of what I felt was extra filler in them.
David Stifel did a good job with narrating this story. I found his voice to be the perfect accompaniment for this wacky tale. I think they did a great job choosing him to perform this book and I would definitely listen to more performances by him. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher for an honest review.

A good read
You really never know what you're going to get when you read a book by Bentley little. Sometimes there is a Supernatural influence involved and sometimes it's just plain old bad guys. This time there was a hint of the supernatural but I don't think that's a spoiler because so many of his books take that approach.
I had a couple of issues near the end where I was hoping for one thing to happen and another thing happened instead but what can you do about that? It's the writer's choice to tell his or her own story the way he or she wants to tell it. But overall I have to say I really liked the story, the suspense, the unexpected twists, and the fact that I couldn't wait to get back in the car to listen to this book every day for a couple of weeks. Really enjoyable.

This book went no where!
There was no end to this book. You had a beginning and then a middle. It didn't really wrap up or anything. I really don't know what I just read. It really went no where., :-( I either love or hate Bentley Little's books. This ones was not my cup of tea. It was just more of the same chapter after chapter with literally no ending. I'll read Bentley Little again down the line, but this book could have been 6 hours long with an ending and could have been quite good.

Interesting story with good plot twists, but....
This story was good. I really enjoy Bentley Little. But the head hopping at times was a little confusing. It goes from the main family, who are already 5 strong to also talking about another couple, then also the extra boy from a different family. So that's 8 different people you are getting this story from. all with different perspectives. That made it hard to follow at times. but the gist of the story is very good. But it is something I would be aware kf if you have to start and stop like me that you might have to back track a little in between to catch up.

To much weird intimate behaviour
I'm new to Little and I've noticed that in the 3 books I've listened to there always seems to be some sort of sordid, carnal sexual behaviour mentioned when characters are under influences (in the Resort, The Bank and The Store. It got all got a bit much and I couldn't listen with the kids around. I'm not a fan of the narrator either.

Great and original story!
Really enjoyed this audio book. You could really feel the tension and the growing sense of foreboding. All the characters were very well drawn. But this would also not have been possible without the excellent narrator! Whom performed every character superbly! Yes their are a few plot holes, that you may question, but who cares! Also be warned, the book does not hold back on graphic details. But all are intrinsic to the plot. Overall this is a great listen for all fans of horror, dont listen if you are not!
