There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Publisher's Summary
On the run....
Elena Gilbert's love, the vampire Stefan Salvatore, has been captured and imprisoned by demonic spirits who are wreaking havoc in Fell's Church. While her friends Bonnie and Meredith explore the evil that has taken over their town, Elena goes in search of Stefan.
In order to find him, she entrusts her life to Stefan's brother, Damon Salvatore, the handsome but deadly vampire who wants Elena, body and soul. Along with her childhood friend Matt, they set out for the slums of the Dark Dimension, where Stefan is being held captive. It is rumored to be a world where vampires and demons roam free, but humans must live enslaved to their supernatural masters.
Elena will stop at nothing to free Stefan. Yet with each passing day the tension between Elena and Damon grows, and she is faced with a terrible decision: Which brother does she really want?
Back in Fell's Church, Bonnie and Meredith have made some dire discoveries. They hastily try to follow Elena and warn her - only to be caught up in Elena's most dangerous adventure yet.
Featured Article: Elena Gilbert—The Vampire Diaries Character Guide
Elena Gilbert is at the heart and soul of The Vampire Diaries series by author L. J. Smith. The novels follow her romances and dramas with the Salvatore brothers, Damon and Stefan. Both are vampires who were turned centuries earlier and find their way to Elena's hometown of Fells Church, VA. She is doppelgänger of the vampire who turned the Salvatore brothers nearly 500 years earlier—Katherine von Swartzchild. As the series unfolds, Elena finds herself being pulled between the two brothers.

This Trilogy is much better than original
I can't believe is it the same writer. Obviously, L.J. Smith has grown enormously as a writer. The characters are far more multi-dimensional and the plot is less predictable. World building is phenomenal. And I am officially kind of in love with Damon. Who would have thought!
When is Midnight coming out on audio book? I can't even imagine it without Rebecca Mozo's terrific narration.

I loved how much time was put into Damon in this book. I do not understand why she is with Stefan. This book was one of my favorites in the series. I would reccommend it if you enjoy the television series vs. the books. This one felt like it was definitely influenced by the TV series.

HORRIBLE!!!
such a shame - I read the first 4 books when I was in high school and loved them. I reread them when the show aired and loved them as much. These next 2 books were horrible. I barely made it through the 2nd book and will not be reading anymore.... As Much as I loved the first 3 thats how much I hated the last 2.

Read it only if you feel like you have to
Unfortunately, I didn't like the book. I have read/listened to all the vampire diaries books thus far and have to say this one is the worst. The plot is different. It picks up where the last one left off. I think the story is viable, but that gets lost in the way that Smith makes Elena drone on & on about things. In all the books before this one, Elena is a strong character with believable qualities. What happened in this book? all of a sudden her morality is out the window and she does not behave like the woman who has set out to the ends of the darkest dimensions to find her true love. instead she behaves like someone who is bipolar as soon as there is anything to do with Damon. "I love you Damon, kiss me. Oh, I can't do this, I love Stefan". Once is steamy, romantic twisty fun. 40 chapters of that gets a bit much. I realize she's supposed to be a high school level teenager, but Smith thus far has written her like a young adult who is capable of making adult decisions. The childish portrayal of Elena in the book is disappointing. 1/2 way through the book, it seems like Smith uses Elena to become a champion for woman's rights and tries making a statement about freeing the oppressed people. Come on. This story is about love, vampires and some action. Why does Smith feel that Elena all of a sudden has to be Abraham Lincoln and emancipate the entire dark dimension from slavery? Should have just left that one alone. At times the book felt like Smith kept going with descriptors just for the sake of increasing the size of the book. instead of adding to the story, the excessive description of things became distracting and is a major detractor. it won't hold your attention for too long. I tried reading the book but found I couldn't get very far with it. I changed to audio so I could zone out the boring parts without hurting my eyes. Bottom line is, read it only if you're a die hard fan and you feel you absolutely HAVE to.

seriously I don't want to know this much about Damon and honestly why, why, why Elana why??? is what I kept saying repeatedly throughout first half. Just so you know, I warned you hehe. But I was glued to it to know what happened to Bonnie, Meredith, Stephan, Mrs. flowers, Matt, and Fell's church, on the edge of my seat.

slow and boring
the 1st few books in this series r quick. this 1 has dragged on & on. The author describes Damon's clothes multiple times even though he always wears the same thing. and then tries to make a joke about it through another character later on. It falls flat though because I'm already so bored w/this story. the Delana scenario the author is trying to convey falls flat. it worked on the show but not here. I can't explain why. I went online asked what chapter Stefan is finally found just so I can skip to it and get onto the next book. That's if I decide to keep going. I haven't heard back yet but I hope I do soon so I don't have to suffer through the rest of the book.

Shadow Souls
In this, the second volume in the new vampire diaries trilogy, the author continues to lead readers down the slightly obscure path she started us on in Nightfall. The first four books, written over ten years ago had a certain something of power about them which this new trilogy doesn't quite have. There really is something special about the original series. That said, it could be that, unlike many readers, Damon never held any charms for me. Stefan was always my champion and he is missing from a good part of both this book and Nightfall. This is just my personal preference rather than a criticism against the author, which is why I've still given it the top rating. Shadow Souls still has the same vivid descriptions and fascinating characters that first captivated me, and the writing only improves with each book. Also, the very unexpected ending will leave readers quite literally begging for the final instalment. I can only hope that Stefan gets the happy ending he deserves.
