Critic Reviews

"The story moves on with a tremendous narrative rush to its climax...extraordinary imaginative work, part saga, part allegory, and wholly exciting." (The Times)

"A triumphant close...a grand piece of work, grand in both conception and execution. An astonishing imaginative tour de force." (Sunday Telegraph)

"His astonishing inventiveness remains to the end and is continued in a series of appendices" (The Guardian)

I love Andy Serkis reading but...

Why this edition is not Whispersync? It is sad only the first two books and the Hobbit are this way with Serkis reading. Any solution?

Enjoyable

I’ve always been a fan of Tolkien’s various works but they are heavy reads! Mr Serkis does a marvellous job at bringing the story to life with good pacing and characterisations, I only wish he could sing as well as he can talk! The singing in al three books was a bit off putting but the overall narration more than makes up for it, we’ll worth a listen for any fans out there.

attack of the appendices

a wonderful story delivered by true talent, followed by a wearisome but necessary slog through the appendices, which serve as additional lore to both the six Lord of the ring episodes and to The Hobbit.

Brilliant narration, poor singing

I would recommend this version to everyone without hesitation. Andy Serkis is a brilliant narrator. Every single character has their own voice, and to here the same Gollum/Sméagol as the films is magical.
My only criticism is the singing. Andy Serkis’ singing is fine for the rustic characters, such as hobbits, but for high elves, it doesn’t do justice. For a few hundred quid more the producers could have hired a session singer for a day and got a much better result.

Sad for the end, but it was a journey!

Book 19/21 for 2021.

So I did it, reading physical books, kindle, three different audiobook recordings, I finally finished Lord of the Rings!

I enjoyed this, it was shorter than I expected which is fine, I found the battles etc kind of numbing and overall I think I prefer Two Towers still - I think I've said everything there is to be said in my prior two reviews, all I can say is I "Get It", I enjoy Tolkein even if not to the extent of some others. I love the homely feel, the emotional resonance and all that - I just can't find traction with the dry and dense exposition at times.

I think I'll rewatch the films, and watch other adaptions and reread the series at some point with a fresh mind - but at the moment I can just say I appreciate Middle Earth and LOTR, but I'll be taking something of a break from it for now...

Brilliant

As in my previous reviews of this series, the narration is beyond excellent. I don't know what else to say - except listen to this series. I believe that many fantasy / science fiction book that has been printed since these 4 books, has unknowingly or knowingly been inspired by these 4 books. I easily could pick out many similar things/references in some more modern books. As I have stated before - Andy Serkis, has taken what seem to many people, 4 dry and overlong books and turned them into enthralling, energetic and exciting books . A brilliant narrator.

Definitive

A definitive performance of the complete edition. Andy Serkis is magnificent. Only geek’s gripe: it would have been amazing to get the chronology Appendix… but I can see it wouldn’t be straightforward to make it listener-friendly. But that’s an utterly minor point.

Return of the king

Great narration by Andy Serkis. Not my favourite part of the trilogy but what can you do . Every story must have a beginning, a middle and end. Tolkien was phenomenally talented and it’s always a good read . This in one of the best renditions

Outstanding!

If you are listening to this book, it is undoubtedly because you loved the performance of Andy Serkis in the previous two books. You will be pleasantly surprised and overwhelmed with this book. Andy's telling of the narrative is beyond words.

So good!

Absolutely brilliant. Such a great end to the trilogy as read by Andy Serkis. Can’t quite believe it but I even listened to the appendices at the end. I’ve never read them before as found them too dry, but with Andy’s reading they were fascinating! Highly recommend.

Andy Serkis is the Master of Voices!

Read admirably and with great command of his acting craft, Serkis is Superb! The absolute pleasure as he flits from character to character, delivering the words of Tolkien with a Mastery and range that is exceptional.

The great expectation too of hearing Serkis reprise his voice talents as Smeagol/Gollum does not leave you disappointed, gifting even more depth and emotional range to the character from the film adaptation.

Absolutely outstanding.

Andy Serkis's reading is Ok

He tends to exaggerate mundane things in the dialogue, kind of dilutes the drama
