Publisher's Summary

Once Cait Du Bois vowed never to return to the place that reminds her of the horror she experienced. But when Hotel Lilith is chosen as the location for her high-school reunion, she finds herself unable to resist the appeal of showing off her new life to the people who once made her existence miserable. Cait is no stranger to being noticed in public, especially as a best-selling author with an enthusiastic fan base, but back at Hotel Lilith, she was once recognized for a completely different reason.

With all eyes on her as she returns to the town she’s spent years running from, she finds it increasingly difficult to discern between fans and foes. Haunted by the memory of a night that torments her, she resolves to put the past behind her and move on. No one knows the truth about what happened back then. At least, that’s what she’s always believed.

Shortly after her arrival, strange things begin to occur. A mysterious package, strange calls, and frightening text messages seem to be just the beginning of the nightmare about to unfold. Someone is determined to bring the truth to light. If they succeed, the life Cait has built based on secrets could come crashing down around her. And if they want her to pay for what she’s done, her lies may be the least of her concerns. Someone’s out for blood.

Painfully long ode to toxic femininity

It's rare that I do not finish a book. Even the clinkers - heck, I paid for them, if they're awful at least it's background noise for when I have to do chores. This book though...I cannot. I'm about six hours in and I'm going to shut this blubber-fest down and return it. Maybe I'll get myself a riveting tale about paint drying. So, six hours in - exactly nothing has happened. It's all dialogue, mostly the thinky-thought kind that happens inside the main protagonist's head, which is predominately the most pathetic, slobbering, navel-gazing drool of what a "nice" girl should do. Or shouldn't do. Oh gosh, should I? What if I do? What will everyone think? Should I? CAN I? What if I hurt the feelings of a chest-thumping man? Golly, that would be bad...or would it? Then people might not think I'm a super nice lady who everyone thinks is nice. I'm nice, right? Super nice! Do you think I'm nice? Can I sit at your table? What does it mean if I sit at your table? What does it mean if I DON'T? Will my boyfriend still like me if I...

...ad nauseam. The narrator did a well enough job of spitting out this drivel, which is supposed to see-saw between teenager-dom and big lady-hood, but it's all super maudlin and wrought with the thickest, most disgusting spackle of FEELINGS and people-pleasing, and at this point it all sounds the same. Super emo. Drippy. Whining for ages. I feel like I need a shower.

If this book was adapted for a movie it would be two minutes long. Literally nothing happens. If you want to be inside the head of an enormously insecure, spineless woman who's still scared of the "mean girls" in her adulthood, cheers and have at it, but there isn't really any activity - it's all just a terrible, terrible, overly long therapy session of the most boring person in creation. It's like the whole book is just her talking to herself about the horror of not being popular in high school, and her desperate bid for approval. Yuck yuck yuck.

Lame!

One of the worst audio books I’ve ever listened to!

I endured it to the end out of curiosity for the conclusion and because of the narrator’s solid performance.
The dialogue is elementary and cringy. I can’t even count how many times the lead character said “is this a joke?” Infuriating!

It focused way too much on the high school love triangle, which became repetitive and irritating. Is it a romance? Is it a mystery? It never decided on a theme.

And for the love of God, can writer’s please stop making their mystery/suspense novels lead character a female mystery novelist! Enough! It’s so cliche! At least in this one she didn’t have a drinking problem.

The story’s resolution is disappointing, but I was glad it was over. Lack-luster, cringe worthy writing, and a lame story. Skip this one.

Should be YA with a better lead character

The storyline of this book was decent. The problem was the writing and the AWFUL main character. The writing was juvenile and clichéd. I felt like I was “reading” a combo of every bad romance/horror novel in one. I could have excused all that for the decent storyline but the main character was frustratingly stupid. You know the commercial where the kids are running from the killer and they come to an empty running car but instead they decide to go into the shed with the chainsaws and run to the cemetery?? This whole book was exactly like that. The main character made every wrong (and I mean blatantly, very obviously wrong) choice and if she was a real person, Darwinism would have taken her out long ago. Her stupidity eventually became so over-the-top I was just wishing death upon her by the end. I’m not sure why the author made the woman so flighty and weak — the story would have held up and been so much better if the main character had half of a brain. It was disappointing because underneath all of that, there really was a decent story there.

Excellent ☆☆☆☆☆!

Just when you think she can't write a better novel, this comes out. I did not expect much because it was written so quickly but was I wrong. Terrific plot twists, well developed characters. I listened to the entire thing in two days! I loved it. Another hit.

Disappointing

This book was a long disappointing teenage drama. I made myself listen just to find out what actually happened and even that was not good.

Wow!!!

I totally didn't see that coming. There towards the end I started to piece some things, but still didn't come up with that outcome! Kiersten Modglin has become one of my top authors for sure!! Can't wait until more of her books come to audible.

I didn’t want it to end!

Another fantastic book by Kiersten Modglin!

This is a deliciously creepy addictive story. It kept me guessing and I couldn’t stop listening!

The narration was perfect. Meg Price did an excellent job.

Fantastic, captivating book

This was a wonderful mystery, suspenseful. I could not put it down. The characters were relatable and the content fluid. This will go on my Must Reads for 2022
