Publisher's Summary

“The powerful origin story of one of Yellowstone’s greatest and most famous wolves.” (Washington Post)

Book one in the Alpha Wolves of Yellowstone series.

Book two, The Reign of Wolf 21, is available now.

Yellowstone National Park was once home to an abundance of wild wolves - but park rangers killed the last of their kind in the 1920s. Decades later, the rangers brought them back, with the first wolves arriving from Canada in 1995.

This is the incredible true story of one of those wolves.

Wolf 8 struggles at first - he is smaller than the other pups and often bullied - but soon, he bonds with an alpha female whose mate was shot. An unusually young alpha male, barely a teenager in human years, Wolf 8 rises to the occasion, hunting skillfully, and even defending his family from the wolf who killed his father. But soon he faces a new opponent: his adopted son, who mates with a violent alpha female. Can Wolf 8 protect his valley without harming his protégé?

“[The Rise of Wolf 8] is a goldmine for information on all aspects of wolf behavior and clearly shows they are clever, smart, and emotional beings.” (Marc Bekoff, Psychology Today)

I love love love this series.

These books are such a beautiful portrait of the wolf families of Yellowstone. I can’t get enough of them and look forward to the last book in the series. Incredible research and storytelling weave an absolutely wonderful series. I’d give more than 5 stars if I could…definitely among my favorites books I’ve ever read.

Ridiculously informative

Tons of information about wolves I'd never read before. Not only is it the most informative book about wolf social and hunting behavior, but also the most entertaining yo read. Already bought and about to start the next book! Can't wait for Cassanova to show up ;)

Remarkable

Truly amazing story. I am convinced reading or listening to this book will make you a better human being. This, thanks to the Wolf. And in this case an amazing Wolf known only as 8.

Highly recommended for all wolf enthusiasts!

This is a wonderful author and storyteller. The narrator was excellent as well.
Rick McIntyre is a Naturalist, and one of the world's most knowledgeable people regarding wolves. Over the years he has accomplished over 100,000 wolf sightings! This is incredible in itself. He is clearly respected by everyone in his related field, and his opinions are sought after by many other experts on wolves. He is also a great storyteller. After reading this book, you will feel as though you actually know many of the Wolves whose lives he has described in such detail. I can't wait to read his next book, which is actually a continuation of the first book in terms of the Wolves, the wolf packs, and many of their descendants whose lives he has followed. Enjoy. You are learning from the best!

Enthralling

Listened to this just a couple months after my First visit to Yellowstone National Park. The author's knowledge and understanding of the wolves is astonishing. The way he describes the interactions, personalities, and emotional relationships of the wolves would have been something I would struggle to buy from an author with less first-hand experience with these animals. Definitely worth listening to if you enjoy the outdoors, the western United States, or animals in general.

Field Notes

This book reads like the authors field Notes, not a coherent story. In addition nearly the entire story is devoted to wolf 21, not wolf 8. If reading field notes is your thing, go for it, but honestly, the anual reports from the Isle Royale study are more interesting. (Yes, I have read those too.)
