Publisher's Summary

Vera Stanhope, star of ITV's Vera, returns in the 10th novel in number one best seller Ann Cleeves' acclaimed series.

Fifty years ago, a group of teenagers spent a weekend on Holy Island, forging a bond that has lasted a lifetime. Now, they still return every five years to celebrate their friendship and remember the friend they lost to the rising waters of the causeway at the first reunion.

Now, when one of them is found hanged, Vera is called in. Learning that the dead man had recently been fired after misconduct allegations, Vera knows she must discover what the friends are hiding and whether the events of many years before could have led to murder then, and now....

But with the tide rising, secrets long-hidden are finding their way to the surface, and Vera and the team may find themselves in more danger than they could have believed possible....

Ann Cleeves at her best

I am a big fan of the Vera Stanhope series generally, but this has been one of the best. I enjoyed it over a few evenings and, without spoiling it for those who have not read it, all I can say is WOW! Great character development and excellent plot. Highly recommended.

Big & beautiful

Vera as magnificent as ever . Enjoyed every moment everything you’d want from a good old fashioned whodunnit
Start from book one and work towards this plot driven story

Well worth the wait.

I have been waiting for the latest book from Ann Cleeves for months and it's been well worth the wait, and as usual she's delivered another fine piece of work. I have been reluctant to turn off and get on with my daily schedule staying so engulfed in the story. I have read most of Ann Cleeves work and she has this skill of making it believable, if you have watched the tv series of Vera or Shetland, you can picture the characters.
The narrator Janine Birkett is as always just perfect. I wait eagerly for the next master piece by the Queen of Who done it? Ann Cleeves.

Loved the story hated the narration

Loved the story. Love all the Vera books but the narration drive me nuts. As a northerner the accents were dreadful and when it wasn’t a northerner speaking it sounded like Mary Poppins Dick van Dyke. And I listened to a sample as I always do but this out me off so much
Story really good though but read the book don’t listen in audible

The saddest twist

I’ll not give away anything about the book other than it’s a real page turner, and lives up to the quality and mystery of all of Ann Cleeves books.

Classical Ann Cleeves

A good story, probably not her best, bust still enjoyable. Vera is always a force of nature. I liked the narrator, she can convey the characters in a poignant way

Another great story

The only problem with Ann Cleeves books is that they are over too soon. Amazing narration as always too. Love these books.

Can’t stand the detective

I can’t cope with what’s her name she is unpleasant and ugly. I didn’t realise she was the protagonist otherwise I wouldn’t have bought it.

Good story

I’ve watched Vera on TV and loved it but not read Anne Cleeves before. Characters are well drawn, great descriptions of people and scenes, good story. The TV show is pretty true to the Vera and Joe characters, the book just has more depth. I’ll read her other books now!

Had to return

I love Vera books but this narrator was so annoying I couldn't keep listening and have returned the book. I will be buying a physical copy.

Ann Cleeves does not disappoint.

When reading other crime novels I find myself missing Ann Cleeves’ compassion and empathy with her characters. Sometimes in life we are dealt hard cards, our moral and ethical response determines whether or not we become murderers. This is the essence of Cleeves.

Sorry no a good theme

Sorry but this book was no good for my mental health due to one of the characters being infatuated with and commuting suicide. I could not get past the first few chapters
