Publisher's Summary

A fresh, challenging and compassionate response to busyness, based on the way of life Jesus offered his disciples.

Who are you becoming? That was the question nagging pastor and author John Mark Comer. By outward metrics, everything appeared successful. But inwardly, things weren't pretty. So he turned to a trusted mentor for guidance and heard these words: 'Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life.' It wasn't the response he expected, but it continues to be the answer he needs.

Too often we treat the symptoms of toxicity in our modern world instead of trying to pinpoint the cause. A growing number of voices are pointing at hurry, or busyness as a root of much evil. Within this audiobook, you'll find a compelling emotional and spiritual case against hurry and in favour of a slower, simpler way of life.

Life changing

Life can sometimes trick you into this fast pace to keep up with all that is going on. The author in this book gives some excellent examples backed up by biblical scriptures that by slowing down is when you really start living.

This is what the doctor ordered!

Needed in 2020

This book has been on my ‘to read’ list since November 2019 and only now, September 2020 have I finished. It’s super practical and insightful on how we can look at living a quiet, slower life. With all that has happened in 2020, this has come at a time that makes it easier to implement.
Great audiobook and great book. Totally recommend.

Wonderful.

Wonderful, timely. Thoughtful and conversational yet full of deep wisdom and practical application. JMC overflows with humility and love - and occasional humour. Grateful for his life and the intentional way he carries his role as pastor and leader and apprentice under Jesus. Such a breath of fresh air in this hurried world. So grateful for this book. It has truly changed my life and brought me closer to the unhurried, intentional and patient ever-present Jesus.

I gave up when the author went woke.

I was enjoying the book until about an hour and a half in when the author went off subject and started talking about white privilege and systemic racism in America. I decided not to waste any more of my valuable time listening to this guy.

I loved this book!

So much wisdom and teaching! I also see Jesus as a great teacher and the book shows in a very light way how to apply his teachings to our life, now, with social media and email, and it was so funny and lovely, I felt like having a conversation throughout the book!

I didnt love it

I did not love this book ( but I know people who rave about it), there were some interesting facts in the book, some things I will take away and think about but overall, I found myself thinking, " when is this going to finish?"
The narrator sort of got on my nerves a bit, I found myself rolling my eyes at times. I am more into deeper theological books, as I found this book lacking in that department.

Enjoyable from start to finish

What I have learnt from reading this book?

Time is valuable so don't waste it but use it wisely.

Feed your soul good things, God things and helpful things.

What goes in come out eventually.

Walking like Jesus means to walk slowly.

If we pray break my heart for what break your, then we need to slow down long enough for God to show us.

Thank you
God Bless

Ben

This is sooooooo true. Simple- not complicated. But really difficult - not easy - to live.

I have listened to this book three times now; it resonates with me. I hate to admit that each time I have been doing something else …… “I dont have time for this - I need to paint / weed / wash / exercise at the same time”. Q - Is there hope for me??? A - donut Jesus way.

The stance taken really rang true and I believe I will make some tangible steps towards slowing down.
I will ponder his tips. I am not sure I will want to go as far as he did, but appreciate his eye-opening approach.

Absolutely what I needed!

It's exciting when the things you have been thinking over a few years, suddenly appear all in one book and you realise that you are not crazy after all! It may sound insulting but: Here is an American Spiritual leader that actually gets it!!!!!!
This book is full of excellent information on how to slow down and the facts behind the 'conspiracy' to prevent us slowing down.
As a Christian and as a Student of Neuroscience and Marketing, I can attest to the History of the problem and the ideas that John Mark Comer presents in helping us to live a more simple, slower and contented life. As someone who suffers from a mind that keeps making dates his body cant keep and has anxiety, I have found this book a great relief and a permission to focus on what I am meant to be doing and to relax a bit instead of frantically running after the next thing. A great mix of mindfulness and spirituality, this book is a breath of fresh air and an alternative to the frantic chasing of the American dream that has become part of American spirituality. Highly Recommended for those seeking peace.

How good is this book?

I started listening to this book like I do most of my audio books, at 1.5x. Within 2 chapters I had slowed it to 1.2
Having just finished I want to start it all over again at normal speed. Thank you for helping me slow down.

A fresh perspective on Sabbath for me.

I have been qreally encouraged by listening to this book. It has given me a renewed desire to live Sabbath intentionally out of freedom. I understand it more now. It has encouraged me in my spiritual life, my whole life. I'm still talking different points through with my wife & working out how we live life giving spiritual practices together with our family.
I recommend you read this book.
