Publisher's Summary

Written in the winter of 1849, The Scarlet Letter unfolds the story of Hester Prynne, a young woman branded as an adulteress in the harsh Puritan world of 17th-century New England. As Hester calls on her inner strength to transcend her shame, the scarlet letter ceases to be a stigma and finally becomes Hester's symbol of self-affirmation. This dramatic reading heightens the sense of lyric poetry that permeates every line of Nathaniel Hawthorne's great novel.

It says unabridged but it’s not

I was really hoping for the full thing. I hope that this can be corrected.

THIS IS ABRIDGED!

While the listing says unabridged, this reading is abridged. VERY frustrating! We purchased to use along with the written book.

Warning: this IS an abridged version!

While the reading is great, and the gist of the story remains intact, this is not an unabridged version of the story...

Horribly Abridged. Turn back while you still can!

This audiobook made me wonder why anyone would call a book with such atrocious character and story development a literary masterpiece. Then I found out that 70% of the story has been abridged out.

I’m upset that I wasted 2.5hrs of my life just to give myself a poor first impression of a novel that I’ve been planning to read.

Horrible Reader

I really like The Scarlet Letter, but this reader is TERRIBLE! She has zero differences in voice for different characters. When characters are speaking, she doesn’t even pause between them to even hint it’s a new character speaking. It was confusing. She has no emphasis on words, no variance of pitch. Very disappointed.

2 HOURS?

Abridged doesn't begin to cover cutting this classic down to two hours in length. What a waste of time.

NOT UNABRIDGED

Michael Learned's voice is both soothing and engaging. Sadly, despite what it says, this is not unabridged, many passages are skipped and so is the introduction.

Poorly narrated and the story itself doesn’t live up to the hype

The narrator seemed as though she couldn’t get through the text fast enough, barely taking a breath, she spoke one word after another without any indication of beginning or end of each sentence half the time. On top of this, the language hasn’t been updated
