Publisher's Summary

Brilliance can be deadly....

When Detective Cormac Reilly's girlfriend, Emma, stumbles across the victim of a hit-and-run early one morning, he is first on the scene of a murder that would otherwise never have been assigned to him.

The dead girl is carrying an ID, that of Carline Darcy, heir apparent to Darcy Therapeutics, Ireland's most successful pharmaceutical company. Darcy Therapeutics has a finger in every pie, from sponsoring university research facilities to funding political parties to philanthropy - it has funded Emma's own groundbreaking research. The investigation into Carline's death promises to be high profile and high pressure.

As Cormac investigates, evidence mounts that the death is linked to a Darcy laboratory and, increasingly, to Emma herself. Cormac is sure she couldn't be involved, but how well does he really know her? After all, this isn't the first time Emma's been accused of murder....

wonderful story

I am obsessed with these books. The local color is excellent, the mysteries are compelling, the reader is just phenomenal with the accents. The bit where the detective was trying to fake a N Irish accent especially was a brilliant bit of voice work. Strongly recommend!

A bit predictable

Compared to the first book in the series I found this one a bit too slow in parts. I've figured out what was going on so far ahead of the detectives that it felt too unrealistic.

I still liked the book and especially the narration.

love this new Irish crime writer

A compelling protagonist, a richly layered plot , a great narrator - and you can't go wrong with several hours spent with Irish accents!

As good as expected.

I knew the”why”quite early on but that doesn’t detract from the story, I like it when we know something the characters don’t know and then watch them building to that understanding. Although, maybe it’s me. People hate watching films with me! Either way, there are characters to love and to dislike. And again the writing and narration were excellent.

Disappointing!

This book has glowing reviews on Amazon. Aoife McMahon is usually a 5* narrator. Therefore, I had high hopes. Sadly, I struggled to engage with any of the characters, I found the story just okay and Aoife, who I usually love listening to, didn’t do male voices justice here.

Aoife McMahon brings words to life again

Aoife McMahon is such a very good narrator. Each character has his/he own voice & personally - truly exceptional reading. Great story Dervla, but many, many thanks to Aoife.

Not brilliant

I had hoped that the petty infighting in the police department would be over, but it is still there in this book, really distracting and annoying, it certainly doesn't add to the story.

My other complaint is that the 'impending' plot is so obvious and yet I saw it even before the police did.

I won't buy another in the series, overall I found it unsatisfactory and I couldn't wait for it to finish.

Nicely plotted

I don’t think Ms McMahon is the right narrator for this series - but nevertheless I am enjoying the stories.

Compelling

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The performance was a pleasure to listen to and having visited Galway and the university campus, I could actually imagine I was there. Believable characters with a very plausible plot.
