Story
In the face of a threatening or unjust situation, have you ever kept silent because you didn't want to rock the boat or make things worse? And then, did you wonder: "Next time, how can I become stronger and more effective?" That's the purpose of The Yin and Yang of Self-Compassion. Kristin Neff, PhD, created this inspiring audio program to help you understand and build the two complementary aspects of this crucial skill: the receptive Yin side self-compassion and the active Yang side self-compassion.

Story
Why does it feel so natural to be compassionate and kind to those we care about - yet so hard to treat ourselves the same way? "Our culture teaches us to use self-criticism for motivation and to build self-esteem by constantly measuring ourselves against everyone else," says Dr. Kristin Neff. "We need to re-learn the essential skill of being genuinely nurturing and supportive toward ourselves."

Story
The relentless pursuit of high self-esteem has become a virtual religion - and a tyrannical one at that. Our ultracompetitive culture tells us we need to be constantly above average to feel good about ourselves, but there is always someone more attractive, successful, or intelligent than we are. And even when we do manage to grab hold of high self-esteem for a brief moment, we can't seem to keep it. Our sense of self-worth goes up and down like a ping-pong ball, rising and falling in lockstep with our latest success or failure.

Kristin Neff changed how we talk about self-care with her enormously popular first book, Self-Compassion. Now, 10 years and many studies later, she expands her body of work to explore a brand-new take on self-compassion. Although kindness and self-acceptance allow us to be with ourselves as we are, in all our glorious imperfection, the desire to alleviate suffering at the heart of this mindset isn't always gentle, sometimes it's fierce.

Every day we experience the uncertainty, risks, and emotional exposure that define what it means to be vulnerable or to dare greatly. Based on 12 years of pioneering research, Dr. Brené Brown dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and argues that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage. Brown explains how vulnerability is both the core of difficult emotions like fear, grief, and disappointment, and the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, empathy, innovation, and creativity.

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Ever noticed that trying to calm down often produces more agitation? Or that real fulfillment can be elusive, despite living a successful life? Often, such difficulties stem from the human brain's hardwired tendency to seek pleasure and avoid pain. Modern science demonstrates that this survival mechanism served the needs of our earliest ancestors, but is at the root of many problems that we face today, such as depression, compulsive and addictive behaviors, chronic pain, and stress and anxiety.

"Believing that something is wrong with us is a deep and tenacious suffering," says Tara Brach at the start of this illuminating book. This suffering emerges in crippling self-judgments and conflicts in our relationships, in addictions and perfectionism, in loneliness and overwork - all the forces that keep our lives constricted and unfulfilled. Radical Acceptance offers a path to freedom, including the day-to-day practical guidance developed over Dr. Brach's 20 years of work with therapy clients and Buddhist students.

Learn the science of self-compassion and mindfulness to heal and build resilience.
In the face of a setback or failure, is your first response to "get tough" on yourself? Do you worry that being too easy on yourself will make you "go soft"? In fact, more than a decade of research shows that mindful self-compassion makes us stronger, not weaker. Together, mindfulness and self-compassion:
- Reduce anxiety, depression, trauma symptoms, and chronic pain.
- Make us more capable, connected with others, and resilient.
- Improve our health, personal relationships, and ability to achieve our aspirations.
In this immersive seven-hour audio program - presented to an audience of psychotherapists, caregivers, teachers, and meditators - you'll join two pioneering researchers to explore:
- The science supporting the many benefits of mindfulness and self-compassion
- How to build kind awareness through meditations, physical gestures, and many other tested methods
- How to cultivate presence, ease, and courage
Taught with depth, humor, and an empathy for those in need, Shauna Shapiro and Kristin Neff weave surprising scientific insights, their own stories as dedicated mothers and researchers, and a wealth of guided practices to bring mindfulness and self-compassion into every area of our lives.

Meditation Frustration!
It felt like over half this book was meditations. I wanted information, tips, practices, and Q&A, but so much of the time listening to this was spent on guided meditations.
While not a bad thing I'm sure for a lot of people, I personally have my own meditation practice and didn't need the sub par ones presented here.
There are a few golden nuggets in this audiobook and some great ideas and stories (like about Shauna's son and the ants).
I personally returned this audiobook because I was hoping for more information and less practicing.
There are some fantastic audiobooks that set all the meditations at the end of the book for the people who do want them, but having them littered throughout here made it unenjoyable to me personally.
Yes I understand this was a seminar / talk and that was their format, but my point is that other people got it right when presenting mindfulness as an audiobook and I wish this would have too.
If you have no problems with the meditations strewn throughout, then this audiobook is really fantastic and Kristen and Shauna are wonderful presenters of self compassion and you'll love their work!

So much knowledge imparted and accessible
Brilliant communication of Neff and Shapiro's work in self compassion and mindfulness. This is a recording of a seminar / workshop, so not technically a book, but the recording is excellent as is the edit - this really works well. If you are interested in this topic, it is well worth listening. This duo have a lot of expert knowledge and deliver so well. I am sure tickets to their events are expensive - this is like attending, but you can rewind!
