Twelve-year-old Crispin has lived on the streets since he was nine - with only his wits and his daring to sustain him, and only his silent dog, Harley, to call his friend. He is always on the move, never lingering in any one place long enough to risk being discovered. Still, there are certain places he returns to. Great entry to the Raven’s Shadow series

Publisher's Summary
From the internationally best-selling author of the Sword of Truth series comes a new Richard and Kahlan novella.
"They are the monsters under the bed when you are little, the shape just caught out of the corner of your eye when you thought you were alone, the shadow of something in a dark corner that surprises you and then isn't there. They stop you dead with a knot of unexpected terror in the pit of your stomach. We have all seen fleeting glimpses of them. Never long enough to see them as I saw them, but it was them. I recognized it the instant I saw it. We've all seen flashes of them, the dark shadow just out of sight. They could briefly terrify us before but never hurt us because they came from so far distant. They were never able to fully materialize in our world so we saw only transient glimpses of them, the shape of them if the light was just right, if the shadows were deep enough...if you were afraid enough. I think that the star shift has brought us closer to their realm so that they now have the power to step into our world and hurt us." (Kahlan Amnell)

great intro to a story, but too short for a novel.
I love where this story is going, however it reads like the prologue to the story and then ends abruptly. I love the Richard and Kaylin stories and the Nicci Chronicles, but this should have been offered to the fans for free as a teaser for the first of many novels in a continuing story arc. I am a long time Terry Goodkind fan, and I would have gladly read this(what should have been an) excerpt and pre-ordered the coming novel. even if it came with the stipulation that there would be a long wait til the writer had time to properly flesh it out.

I love these characters
I am fully immersed in this world and these characters, so to start with know that I’ll read anything in this line.
Goodkind has decided to continue Richard and Kahlan’s story through shorter novels, which is cool. I’d say overall this story is interesting and gives us a glimpse in to the new threat facing Richard, Kahlan, and the D’haran empire. Without giving anything away, the ending is a moment that serves as both a payoff for the characters’ lengthy relationship, as well as a new jumping off point and cliffhanger. If you’re familiar with Goodkind, you know his style by now and this is definitely that. I’m not crazy about the dude doing the reading, but I also literally just finished listening to Wizard’s First Rule and that dude was pretty awesome so, I’d say if you’re familiar with the Sword of Truth series, it’s a great listen. If not go back to Wizard’s First Rule. Don’t be using your credits to start this late in a series.

Well, at least I only payed $2 for this.
Terry Goodkind's books are certainly not going to be added to my TBR. Between his terrible character interactions and constant repetition of obvious information, I couldn't even finish the book. I got 1/3 of the way though and just couldn't take it anymore.

Why?
The narrator did the best he could with some awful material. Not all male narrators can do female voices effectively but he can. The actual story is so lazy that I got about an hour in and couldn't make it any further. The writing is so terrible that I blocked out the memory of trying to get into the Sword of Truth series years ago until I thought, "Terry Goodkind sounds familiar..." Why is he so prolific? There's good fantasy books out there, this isn't one of them.

Let down
In truth I am a Terry Goodkind fan, however I was let down by book one! The story is instantly familiar but very slow to start and it finishes right as its gets going. Seems to me that books 1 through 5 are one book cut into parts and the value in book one is not there. I wont be buying book two and it breaks my heart.

Great read! Let down by poor editing
Loved this book, was a shame it wasn't longer! I understand it's part of a series though and can't wait for the sequel. The only complaint is the repetition of dialogue that seems to be aiding to word count rather than the story. It's quite frustrating when the dialogue between characters go around in circles repeating the same information throughout entire chapters. Richard is a smart man, yet he asks the same questions about the Golden Goddess dozens of times and gets the same answer. One must assume someone of such intelligence wouldn't need to ask a question he's already been given the answer to. Over and over and over ect
Im looking forward to the next installment and hoping the editor does a better job!
