Publisher's Summary

The movie star and the dog groomer are one kiss away from the perfect love story. That’s the hiccup in a warm and witty romance by the bestselling author of Roommaid.

The meet-cute award goes to dog groomer Juliet Nolan. It’s one of Hollywood’s biggest nights when she volunteers as a seat filler and winds up next to movie heartthrob Noah freaking Douglas. Tongue-tied and toes curling in her pink Converse, she pretends that she doesn’t have a clue who he is. It’s the only way to keep from swooning.

She’s pretty and unpretentious, loves his dog, and is not a worshipping fan. No way Noah’s giving up on her, even if his affectionate pursuit comes with a bump: Juliet has a pathological fear of kissing and the disappointments that follow. What odds does romance have without that momentous, stupendous, once-in-a-lifetime first smooch? Patient, empathetic, and carrying personal burdens of his own, Noah suggests a remedy: they rehearse.

The lessons begin. The guards come down. But there’s another hitch they weren’t betting on. As for that cue-the-orchestra-and-roll-credits happy ending? It might take more than practice to make it perfect.

Critic Reviews

“Wilson (Roommaid) balances the quirky with the heartfelt in this adorable rom-com.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Wilson’s follow-up to Roommaid is a fun romp with only-in-the-movies-level swoons and genuine laugh-out-loud moments. With a fairly PG rating, this one may also work for teen romance readers.” (Library Journal)

“An emotionally satisfying romance novel by an author with a genuine flair for combining originality with a particularly effective style of narrative storytelling…extraordinary and unreservedly recommended....” (Midwest Book Review)

Dog Groomers Beware

Cute story, but suspension of disbelief is a little hard on this one. It could have definitely used a groomer as a beta reader or the author could have discussed the details of mobile grooming with one. It's painfully inaccurate with regards to the heroine's business, both practices and generalities. $60 for a Rott/Newf x mobile! In Los Angeles?? Ludicrous! Also, some of the details of the hero's lifestyle are completely impractical also. The glaring leaps of logic kept pulling me out of the story.
I'd be happy to help correct these minor but distracting details, if the author is interested.

Meh…

I rated it 3 ⭐️ because I wasn’t feeling this one. Overall the story was ok. It just wasn’t for me. I’m a little sad about that since I was looking forward to reading it.

The narrator was ok. She didn’t inflect much tone difference so it was more like she was just reading to the book into the microphone.

Great story to listen to

Sally Britton, one of my favourite authors featured this book on her newsletter as one of the books she enjoyed reading. I don't usually read any contemporary novels but on her recommendation that this was a sweet and clean read, I decided to give it a try. The Kindle Unlimited version has the audio book linked to it, so I decided to listen to the audio book instead. As a South African used to reading British English historical novels, I find it difficult to mentally process contempory American English, especially in written form, so the audio book was perfect.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the characters, and could not wait to hear what came next. So much so that I stayed up until 3am to finish the book.
I would definitely recommend the story and the audio reading.

Fun, light, minor tear jerky

I really enjoy this author. Her stories are fun, light, with both teary eyed and laugh out loud moments. I even gasped once! Thanks so much.

Silly Romantic Comedy

This started out as a cute romantic comedy but quickly turned ridiculous. The conflict in the story is so unrealistic and so silly that it was hard to relate to any of the characters. I consistently found myself just rolling my eyes at the stupidity of it all and just waiting for the story to finish. The only reason I even finished it is because I was taking a very long drive to and had nothing else to listen to. I’m glad I got this as an audible deal and that I did not waste a full credit on it.

So, so trite. So, so insipid. So, so don’t waste your time.

The narrator’s voice is twenty+ years too old for this character. It also appears that she was told the faster she read, the higher her bonus. Or perhaps she was just as bored with the story as I, and wanted to be done with it, STAT.

This book sounded like it was written by a starry-eyed and celebrity-mad 12-year old, with a shopworn plot and all the clichés one would expect; I’m astounded a book like this was published, since I’ve always heard it is very difficult finding an agent who will represent you, much less a publishing house to take notice of your work.

The male “lead” is a handsome, hot, muscled, and world-famous actor who’s not only kinder & more charitable than anyone else in the world, but is intelligent, incredibly thoughtful, romantic, and the best kisser on the planet. He doesn’t like the celeb life and just wants a normal girl to settle down with in his small house (since that’s better for the environment, cough, cough), and oh, yes; he can cook like a dream because (of course) he trained as a chef for a movie role.

Then we have the shy, innocent [strangely naive/stupid, as she grew up in LA], intelligent (ahem), stunningly beautiful-but-doesn’t-know-it dog groomer (who knows nothing about the profession; I do wish the author bothered to do even a smidgen of research) young woman with a hurt heart, who needs someone just like the actor to teach her how to love… Gag.

Spoiler alert! (Although really…there can’t be a spoiler, as you know what’s going to happen and precisely how it’s going to end by page two.) After a mind-numbingly long and repetitious lead up, there’s the expected tension over…a lame “lie” (🙄🤷🏼‍♀️ But is it really a lie? Or if so, is it that big of a deal?). Of course it sends the actor away in a rage before they both come to their senses and declare their undying love for each other, blah, blah, blah.

And “blah” is the best I can say about this dreck.
