Publisher's Summary

Madeleine Talmage Force is just 17 when she attracts the attention of John Jacob "Jack" Astor. Madeleine is beautiful, intelligent, and solidly upper-class, but the Astors are in a league apart. Jack's mother was the Mrs. Astor, American royalty and New York's most formidable socialite. Despite their 29-year age difference and the scandal of Jack's recent divorce, Madeleine falls headlong into love - and becomes the press' favorite target.

On their extended honeymoon in Egypt, the newlyweds finally find a measure of peace away from photographers and journalists. Madeleine feels truly alive for the first time - and is happily pregnant. The couple plans to return home in the spring of 1912, aboard an opulent new ocean liner. When the ship hits an iceberg close to midnight on April 14th, there is no immediate panic. The swift, state-of-the-art RMS Titanic seems unsinkable. As Jack helps Madeleine into a lifeboat, he assures her that he'll see her soon in New York....

Four months later, at the Astors' Fifth Avenue mansion, a widowed Madeleine gives birth to their son. In the wake of the disaster, the press has elevated her to the status of virtuous, tragic heroine. But Madeleine's most important decision still lies ahead: whether to accept the role assigned to her or carve out her own remarkable path....

I did not want this to end ...

I was unsure of the narrator for the first few paragraphs, but very quickly I realized she was the perfect person to narrate this book. The book was written with amazing flow as The Second Mrs. Astor (Madeleine) tells her story to her 5-month-old son so he will have a record of the history of his father / mother when he is old enough to understand it all.

You know from the beginning that John Jacob Astor, IV, (JJA) died on the Titanic and the story is the tale of a young Madeleine and how she became the second Mrs. Astor.

After I finished the book I looked up some of the history of the people involved, such as the first Mrs. Astor (Ava), son of JJA and Ava, Vincent, as well as the Second Mrs. Astor. I found it very interesting to learn that JJA died at the age of 47 and, although the Second Mrs. Astor was 29 years his junior, she too died young at only 46 years of age from heart failure. Ava lived to almost 90 which you will find interesting when you hear about the terms of the divorce decree between Ava and JJA! And you will want to read up on their son, Vincent, and his life! Also I found the history of John Jacob Astor, VI, (Jakey) the son of Madeleine and JJA full conflict, numerous marriages and legal battles.

The one thing everyone reading this book and researching the history will conclude is, money does not buy health, happiness or longevity.

will I be able to finish this?

*audible* This is a great story, if you can get past the narrator who alternately whispers and yells. Have your volume dial handy and be ready to use it a LOT. So annoying while driving, it's really a shame.

Don’t buy this book!

This book is poorly researched. It is written in an overwhelming trashy style which is completely adversed to the character of the period.

Tedious

Every twig, sea wave, food item, etc. described to distraction. Adjectives, adjectives, adjectives, adjectives, adjectives!
