Publisher's Summary

DI Amy Winter knows evil. She’s lived through it.

Four-year-old Ellen is snatched by a stranger in the dead of night. Her devastated mother, Nicole, receives four identical phials and a threatening note in a familiar scrawl that chills her to the bone. But she always knew this would happen. She’s been expecting it for years....

According to the note, one of the phials is poisoned. Nicole is given a deadly challenge: if she drinks one, the sadistic kidnapper will notify the police of Ellen’s location. The sender claims to be Luka Volkov, but Luka is supposed to be dead, killed long ago in a fire that haunts all those involved.

DI Amy Winter is still reeling from the discovery that she is the daughter of a serial killer, and her childhood trauma only makes her more determined to bring Ellen home. When another child is taken, Amy finds herself in a race against time. To rescue the children, must she seek help from the one person she wants to forget.

The breathless narration is insufferable!

THE SECRET CHILD is the 6th novel I have listened to Elizabeth Knowelden narrate. The first five were excellent. After listening to over three hours of this novel I had to give up. The story seems to be quite good.

Pretty good

I get frustrated by the Amy Winters books because they go on and on about feeling guilty for who her parents are, like surely people realize you dont have any control over that?? I also feel like the character makes a lot of dumb choices & lets her birth mom push her buttons.

The reader is terrible.

The story is fine, and engaging enough. But the reader is just awful: too dramatic, with odd and unnecessary emphasis in every single sentence, and breathless delivery I found unbearably distracting.

Dragged on and on

Too much reverting to the past. Story was a yawner. Couldn’t wait for it to be over.

great book but rushed ending

I really enjoyed this book and the narrator was excellent. However, the end felt rushed and that was disappointing.

A good Listen

I enjoyed this book, but hoped for a better resolution. What about the appeal? I don’t see that in the future for DI Winter.
Oh well...in to another author.

I couldn't finish it

The story seems decent, and the narrator has a beautiful voice, HOWEVER, whomever told her she should make EVERY SINGLE LINE sound ominous and heavy (the end of every sentence being an emphasized, drawn out whisper) even when it wasn't ominous or even important should never be allowed to produce an audio book again. I just can't continue.

The narration is appalling

The narrator was shockingly bad in this recordeing. I really enjoyed how the first book in the series was read but in this one I found myself screaming at it in frustration.
The narrator tried to put suspense in every single sentence even when it wasnt need so in the end it detracted from what was a good story line.
I am not sure I can stomach listening to that narrator again.

Irritating Naration

I was unable to listen to this for more than ten minutes. The whispery narration seemed completely innapropriate to the content. It put me in mind of a mother telling a small child a slightly scary story! A very strange choice for a series of thrillers.
I've rated the story with 3 stars out of fairness to the author who surely cannot be blamed for the choice of narrator?

The Worst Narrator on Audible?

Ruined by the ridiculous over-emoting of the narrator. Every single sentence, every single word, regardless of context, is dripping with the sort of faux foreboding a first year drama student would cringe at.

The rest of the book is ok and would be listenable enough but it's difficult getting beyond the poor narration.

Meh.

I loved the 1st book in this series and gave it 5 stars. This one, not so much. It just didn't hold my interest and, though I tried to push through to the end, I gave up half way through.

The narrator was very good.
