Publisher's Summary
Good Morning America’s “27 Books for June"
PopSugar’s Best Summer Reads of 2021
A new novel by the author of The Henna Artist, a Reese's Book Club Pick
In New York Times best-selling author Alka Joshi’s intriguing new novel, henna artist Lakshmi arranges for her protégé, Malik, to intern at the Jaipur Palace in this tale rich in character, atmosphere, and lavish storytelling.
It’s the spring of 1969, and Lakshmi, now married to Dr. Jay Kumar, directs the Healing Garden in Shimla. Malik has finished his private school education. At 20, he has just met a young woman named Nimmi when he leaves to apprentice at the Facilities Office of the Jaipur Royal Palace. Their latest project: a state-of-the-art cinema.
Malik soon finds that not much has changed as he navigates the Pink City of his childhood. Power and money still move seamlessly among the wealthy class, and favors flow from Jaipur’s Royal Palace, but only if certain secrets remain buried. When the cinema’s balcony tragically collapses on opening night, blame is placed where it is convenient. But Malik suspects something far darker and sets out to uncover the truth. As a former street child, he always knew to keep his own counsel; it’s a lesson that will serve him as he untangles a web of lies.

I got bored at times. So much recycled content from the first book made me feel like I was listening to the same story twice, only not as well told the second time. Better editing might have been helpful.

Decent story but the performance ruins it
The voice of Lakshmi is well acted but the performance of Malik and Nimmi, especially their Hindi pronunciations, are terrible. Nimmi seems like she has a forced Indian accent the whole time. It really ruined the experience for me, especially after The Henna Artist which was voiced very well.

Great sequel!
This was a good sequel to The Henna Artist. I opted to do Audible for this one since I really enjoyed the first one through Audible as well. The only thing I didn't care for was the narrator who read for Nimmi. I didn't like the fake Indian accent with the odd way she said words with the letter R. Like, it really got under my skin so much that I felt compelled to write it in the review. Other than that, both other narrators were 100% and really enjoyed listening to this book!

Transporting! As good as the 1st I eagerly wai 3rd
The story is mesmerising and well built and connected from the Henna Artist. I am really looking forward to Radhas story in part 3.
However the narrators Deepa and Ariyan need to be changed. For an india based novel, the accent and pronounciations are wrong and move the listener away from enjoyment.
