Publisher's Summary

Only the best have access to the Elite Specializations of the Rangers. Will the Snow Panthers make it?

The war goes on in Norghana. The East supports the new King, while the West supports Arnold Olafstone, the legitimate heir to the crown. In the North the Wild of the Ice claim their lands. In the midst of the war, Lasgol and his teammates have graduated as Rangers.

They must decide whether to take the Specialization Test. If they do, and pass it, they will have access to training as Specialist Rangers and be able to opt for one of the elite specializations. For this they will need to go to a hidden, secret place: The Shelter. It is rumored to be somewhere special, secret and arcane.

Will Lasgol take the Specialization Test? Will he pass it? Will his friends? Who will make it and who will not? What new adventures are waiting for them at the Shelter?

This is where the Series stalls out.

I've really been enjoying this series up until now . This book is not bad it's just very mediocre. Let's move it along please! I mean come on... these are the exact same struggles we've covered in great detail in 2 other books. We get it the same one dimensional character that has hated Lasgol for 4 books still hates him can we just get rid of that character,

The story starts out OK but midway through this book completely stalls out. Instead of moving the plot along the author chooses to waste our time with Meaningless repetitive activities and a quagmire of detailed specialist instruction. If you are really bored I guess listen to this book otherwise just read a summary and save yourself some time.

Let's hope the author picks it up in the next one.

Feel short changed

Even though it was full length compared to the other books thus far, it felt like half a book.

Great book, don't listen to the bad reviews

This book is not mediocre. Although this book does cover a dryer, yet necessary stretch of the plot, the writing, advice, character building, and realistic personalities can be seen as the values behind this work--value I believe that makes up for any short-comings.
The first book or two of this series was noticeably deflated when it came to some character quality and character depth aspects, but as with many fiction series, by book 3 or 4, and especially by this book The Secret Refuge--book 5--the quality has caught up with the potential, and the author has already by this point witten an excellent story to enjoy.

Enjoyed it.

As old and jded as I am, I find this series compelling. The mix of innocence and reality is different and intriguing. I often wonder if I am reading agiprop. I hope not. Time will tell.

Writers ideology bleeds into the writing too much. Has a really weird dynamics between male and female writing

I really like certain aspects of this series but the bad writing and plot holes are becoming too much. There is also this weird dynamic with how he gives inconsistent privileges to the female characters in the writing that aren’t afforded to the males. Makes it seems like writer ideological views bleeding in and that’s the best way to ruin a story for me. Literally in one page the girlfriend of the lead says there are things he doesn’t know about her and on the same page she demands he never keep anything from her or else…..Eye roll

redeemed

after feeling kind of "meh" about books 3 and 4, I was ready to quit the series... but happy I gave it one more go. New characters, new setting, new adventures! The characters we know and love are developed a bit more, including more hints and peeks into all of the Snow Panthers histories.
This reads quick and easily with a balance of action/adventure and world building detail and description.
As always, narration is on point!

No need..

There is literally no reason for this book... nothing moves the story an inch... nothing resolves or creates an old or new conflict... Basiclly all it did was to move everything forward half a year.

Good soup

It’s good but it doesn’t have as much actions as the others. Seems like it had a little to much filler and not enough plot progression. Still good though and definitely worth the listen

A work of art

As soon as I read the first book I was hooked and the Story line is superb, but there is one thing I would like to highlight that there is some humerus moments that make you smile. Overall this is a great book 100 out of 5 stars.

Favourite book out of the series!

Out of all of the books so far, I've enjoyed this book the most.

It dies get repeative the way the author writes a few things. Such as the trip back Lasgol takes home then back. Which I can it being the same for the character as he takes the same trip home but I wish parts such as this and parts where characters just repeat the same actions and words every book. I don't know why but in the past two books I was getting over hearing Gerd almost constantly being referred as the "big boy" or "big guy" I can't remember which.

I enjoyed the writing, small interactions, character development and world exploring this book gave. Viggo scaring the 1st years at the near the beginning of the book had me laughing. I love his character development and the rest of the cast.
