Publisher's Summary

A stranger who appears on Kat's doorstep turns out to be one Charlotte Bristow, legal wife of Joe Bristow, the man Kat once believed herself married to—who she thought died at sea twelve years ago. Kat is jolted by Charlotte’s claims that Joe was not only murdered but that he also had amassed a small fortune before he died. Charlotte makes the cook an offer she cannot refuse—if Kat can discover the identity of Joe's murderer, Charlotte will give her a share of the fortune Joe left behind.

With the help of Daniel McAdam, her attractive and charismatic confidante, Kat plunges into her own past to investigate. When it becomes apparent that the case of Joe’s death goes far deeper than simple, opportunistic theft, Kat and Daniel's relationship is put to the test, and Kat herself comes under scrutiny as her connection to Joe is uncovered. She must race to catch the real killer before she loses her job and possibly her life.

As good as ever

Always an enjoyable listen. But I do wish Daniel 's "voice" was different. it just doesn't feel right to me sometimes.

Finally getting some answers!

Enjoyed the story, the mystery keeping you wondering as it should! Finally some answers to Daniels past as well as some indication of what may be part of their future. I only gave the performance a 4 due to Daniels voice being rather odd, in my opinion, while thoroughly enjoying the others. Looking forward to the next one!

Love these characters

Loved this story. Finally some answers. Please do not kill off any of these characters. I will never forgive you.
What in the world is wrong with Daniel’s voice? It has changed drastically. He sounds ignorant and difficult to hear. Why the change in timbre? Most irritating

Ho-hum and Humdrum

I quite like this series and this author, but this is the second story in the series that plods along to the point of tedium. I’ve had similar experiences while reading other series by the same author: by book six or seven the character and plot progression slows to the speed of fossilization. I think I’ll wait until the release of book 10 or 11 and pick back up.
This particular story would have been more enjoyable if condensed and edited into a novella.

Sad to see it end.

I was hoping for another book in the series , however I think the author has concluded with this last book. It has been a lovely series to listen to as I love the setting, the characters and all the cooking!! Maybe there will be one more? I may only hope!

Wonderful mystery!

This was wonderful! This mystery was more personal to Kat Holloway than the other stories. How and where did her husband actually die? And did he have a fortune in gold as some believed! The quest is on because her husband's first wife has shown up to get Kat's help! Then Daniel stuns Kat with his belief concerning their relationship. He is devastated by her reaction. Its a very touching ending! I loved it. The Narrator is terrific!

Love this series!!

Love the series, the characters, the writing, the performance. I do agree that Daniel’s voice needs some work. Very hard to hear and too breathy. Other than that, flawless!!

Excellent

I have loved this series from the first book, and that love continues with the latest. Kat Holloway is a smart, kind, self-assured and pragmatic character who ends up being pulled into mysteries by others. My affection for her grew throughout the story. I was heartened to read the deepening of her relationship with Daniel, and the growth of her relationships with Lady Cynthia and other friends. The supporting characters are so important in Kay’s books. A good time and a good mystery and yay for advancement in the romance!

I listened to the audiobook. Anne-Marie Piazza does a fantastic job narrating. Her characterizations make such a difference. Very well done.

Best one yet!

What a great way for so many questions to be put to rest! As always each character grew and questions answered! The narrator was excellent!
