Her World-Altering Secret Can’t Be Hidden Much Longer

Elloren Gardner hides the most powerful secret in all Erthia - she is the Black Witch of Prophecy, and destined to triumph…or be used as the ultimate weapon of destruction.

Separated from everyone she loves, isolated and hunted, Elloren must turn to the last person she can trust - her fastmate, Commander Lukas Grey. With the Mage forces of Gardneria poised to conquer all of Erthia, Elloren has no choice but to ally with Lukas and combine their power to keep herself out of the hands of Gardnerian leader Marcus Vogel…the holder of the all-consuming Shadow Wand.

With just weeks to train to become a warrior, and no control over her magic, Elloren finds unexpected allies among those under orders to kill her. It’s time to step up. To fight back. And to forge onward through the most devastating loss yet.

Critics are raving about Laurie Forest’s incredible debut, The Black Witch:

“Forest uses a richly imagined magical world to offer an uncompromising condemnation of prejudice and injustice.” (Booklist, starred review)

“Exquisite character work, an elaborate mythology, and a spectacularly rendered universe make this a noteworthy debut, which argues passionately against fascism and xenophobia.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“This briskly paced, tightly plotted novel enacts the transformative power of education, creating engaging characters set in a rich alternative universe with a complicated history that can help us better understand our own.” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

Ugh! 😫

I really liked this series until this book. This book had some good moments... When I didn’t feel like I was reading a straight romance book. Romance is fine, all of the other books had some but this book revolves around it. I get it, they are attracted to each other now let’s move on with the story. The problem is that it never does. I wanted to roll my eyes every time they had to kiss to have an intense magical connection. Is there magic contained in the fluids they are swapping? “Hang on we need more magic,” pause for kissing scene... most boring parts of the book. Where did the substance go and when did Elloran get so whiney? The best parts of the book are the few parts that Elloran isn’t in.

Where is Diana? Where are any of the other characters? It was a really great book when it moved away from Elloran’s story. I have never wanted to slap a main character more. She is shallow and weak. Come on! No one is that weak, especially after what she overcame in the other books. If I was actually reading the book instead of listening to it I would have thrown it across the room. I can’t afford a new phone so I kept it together.

The narration is good.

Ughghgh just ughghgh!!

This book started out strongly. I was really enjoying it at the beginning, then it just became about a whiny "hero" girl, and the love triangle, - ooops one of them "dies" but hey, there is lots of pining away. Eloren is weak and annoying . All the "power coursing through my lines" got soooo very old. Every other sentence seemed to be that. It was so bad. Not reading the next one. The reader was amazing however. Kudos to her, bc the book was so boring, frustrating and disappointing. I haven't written a review in a very long time, but seriously if I can help someone make a decision to perhaps just move on, then that is good. I feel I wasted time I cannot get back. There are so many good books out there. Just not this one.

3.5 hours left and I'm throwing in the towel

I loved the first two books. Absolutely couldn't wait for this one to come out. But I had to force myself through this one and now I'm finally throwing in the towel.

Elloren is too weak for too long

I may not be able to finish this book. I've only got 5 hours left but I am really struggling. I think the author kept Elloren too weak for too long. I'm 3/4 of the way through the 3rd book in the series and she is STILL needing and seeking guidance from everyone else around her.

I could understand her weakness in the first book, and somewhat through the second book, but homegirl is STILL not able to access her power and is afraid and timid, and I'm finding myself over this narrative.

Also, if I hear Julia Whelan say the phrase "my lines" one more time...🙉.

I've loved this series. I've loved the underlying messages. I'm sure by the end of this book Elloren will have found her power, but I'm not sure I care enough anymore to find out how.

Awful writing

I am not a picky reader, but this? It repeats itself over and over again. It spells every emotion out. I have really enjoyed this series so far but the writing in this book is so bad that I almost can not listen to it.

The performance is good though.

Spoilers Contained: This book was a waste.

Through this entire series I have been waiting for Elorin to come into her power. To stop cowering behind others and find her strength and be an OPed, Broken badass who takes shit from no one.

The exact opposite happens. I never really got her connection to Evan in the first place and she spends so much time talking about him. Then at the last minute we don’t know if her new love interest has survived?!

And SHE STILL ISNT POWERFUL!!! She still cowers and I find that this whole book could have been told in a few chapters. The writing is repetitive and overly explained. And I’m bored and frustrated that i waited this long for this much nothing to happen. This should have been the final book. It just feels like they know I’ll give them my money to find out what happens next so they can write whatever they want. I have 25 minutes left and I don’t even know if I want to finish it. I’m disappointed. I was waiting for thrilling tails of her kicking ass and taking names and she like sort of starts to feel empowered but gets cut off at the knees and still letting a man save her. Ughhhhhhhhhh

Filler book

I absolutely loved seeing Elloren and Lukas's relationship develop but it was almost too fast, not enough, and painfully predictable. But beyond this development and storyline, all the characters were separated and struggling with their own mostly internal dialogue. Really, it was mostly filler, not enough of any one thing. Do yourself a favor and just wait to read this one until the next book is available, you won't want to deal with the cliffhanger anyway.

frustrating but good

I love this series and the author is good but this book frustrated me in a lot of ways. if I wasn't so committed to the series I might have stopped reading it. this is book 3 for ellorin and I feel like by this time and all that she had been through she would have gained some semblance of strength and resolve but no. we spend the whole book dealing with her insecurities and self inflicted weaknesses. I just can't anymore with her. then just as she comes into her own the book ends. aghhhh. im really annoyed

I was so looking forward this book.

I have listened to all 5 books in this series quite a few times, so I would better understand Ellorens history and that of her parents and the the history of the white wand. I agree with other reviewers that Elloren was pretty wimpy in The Black Witch and The Iron Flower. I felt she would probably grow some lady balls ( please pardon my indelicacy but I could think of no other phrase), in this book. Don't get me wrong, I love her, but I'm still waiting and I am getting frustratrated. As for Yvon, he never did a thing for Elloren, unlike Lukas, who loves her to death and has saved her bacon any times. Now it looks like Lukas is out and Yvon is in ( I never thought Yvon was dead, either)! Please, Laurie, in the next book, let us dedicated readers see a little light, a little hope come in to the series. It is almost getting too depressing. I am so glad I am listening, not reading (I have a problem with my eyesight), because Julia Whelans terrific narration kept me from giving up on this book when it was getting too dark.

"flares" and "lines" ALL THE TIME, aaargh!!

I haven't noticed this in the other books, but in this one I was going mad around 1/3rd through about how many times the words "lines" and "flared" were used/ "a flare of fire went through my lines". I swear, it must be at least every 3rd page or the likes when we follow Elloren and it was making me so annoyed I almost gave up the book! And I've really liked this series up till now. It was endless "ooh, our magic is connected!! See, my fire-lines flare"-repetition to me -_- Editor pls

Not as good as the first two

I found this frustrating. Too much concentration on romance at the cost of developing the story, and in some cases, completely ignoring other charcters who were central to the first two books. I found myself fast fowarding bits because it became tedious.
I hope the next one gets back to involving those great characters and providing more depth, not just being a pseudo Mills & Boon novel about Elloren and - well, whoever her next romantic partner is.

It was perfect except the love triangle...

In the second book, it was Ivon, and then she thought that he was dead so it was the other one, and at the end of the 3d book........................... Ivon again, because the other one is probably dead. Of course, we know that they are all alive.... I would have love a love story more mature. Anyway... the reste was very good !!!

Nothing like the other two

I really wanted to love this. But it seemed like a completely different book to the other two. Can’t say much more without leaving spoilers for this book..but it’s worth having a look at the reviews for this on Goodreads! The character motivations, character actions, character personalities even..none of them seemed to fit with the first two books. That being said, I enjoyed meeting some new character and will continue reading as I hope somehow the series redeems itself with respect to the main characters.

Racism so overdone

First few chapters is just one racist incidence after the other. I get it. This world is very racist! Surely by now there could be a bit more subtlety??

Good story but annoying main character

I really like this universe and the storyline is overall interesting, but after three books I just can’t stand how naive and simply annoying Ellorin is! Not to mention how many times they say fire-line 🤬 it just is a severe lack of depth in the narration of the main character and I almost regret listening to the end.

Definitely Worth It!!

WOW 😮 just... WOW!!

What a whirlwind from beginning to end, certainly not disappointed.

Please please do not leave such a gap in between audiobooks - I don’t think I could take waiting so long for the next instalment as it was almost 2 years!

Waiting in anticipation 🥰
