Just disappointed with ending

I enjoyed the story until it just ended. It seemed unfinished, like maybe the author just got tired of writing, or had something else to do instead.

Disappointed!

Narrator was fantastic! The story is disappointing. This could have been so good, but these books are about a more liberal group of ladies for their time. This author seems to struggle herself, writing conservative characters, then throwing in contradiction by accepting abortion and homosexuality. I'm glad I didn't purchase.

Great story with lots of well-written characters

I loved the story, learning how stores were once operated and great characters. I thought the narrator was great, easy to understand and wonderful differentiation in each person's voice. But, the ending left more questions, so I hope there is a sequel

Cliffhangers

I enjoyed the stories of the different people and would have liked getting to know them better. The narration was excellent and I was engaged throughout the book. I often read multiple or even all the books in a series but I really dislike cliffhangers. I continue with a series because I like the characters and am interested enough to follow their stories. Cliffhangers, or stories deliberately left incomplete, feel like tricks to get me to purchase the next book in the series. Since this series has several books in it I can only assume the pattern of cliffhangers will continue. I will not, unless they are included in the plus catalog. As much as I enjoyed this book (until the abrupt ending) I don’t want to spend more on another cliffhanger.

Painfully boring

I couldn’t manage to slog through the whole thing. The story and characters remained flat in chapter after chapter. The narration is equally flat, which didn’t help. It’s a shame because the premise has such promise!

Wow...such a good listen for on a rainy day.

Getting to know the Harper girls and associated friends and family was a wonderful way to spend several afternoon of stormy weather while I worked on art projects. I love the historical details tied into the personal stories. Story lines are easy to follow and I quickly was rooting for each and every character. Looking forward to experiences all six books in the series. And bonus, the narrator was perfect and did nothing to annoy or distract. So often, I love a book but the audio narrator is not a good fit. Juliette Burton is really wonderful.

Thoroughly enjoyed!

I love this particular period in history and believed I'd enjoy the storyline. If the first book is any indication I will love the series!
I also really appreciated the talent of the narrator=)

A truly delightful story of Edwardian England.

Rosie Clarke writes beautifully about a poignant time in British history, the story introduces wonderful, lifelike characters, each portrayed, perfectly by the beautiful voice of Juliette Burton…. I really hope that these two ladies will have more storylines ready for us to enjoy! The book is easy listening but also thought provoking as Rosie Clarke brings wonderful characters to life, peppered with historical facts, that have greatly affected all of our lives in the 21st century. I finished this brilliant story wanting to know… what happens next to these brilliant characters… hope I’m not kept waiting too long! Fantastic !

Narration

Whenever Maggie spoke the narrator had an annoying habit of lowering her voice so quiet you had a job to hear her sentences at times

Not For Me

Glad this was a free read/listen. I know its a different era but still feels far fetched and unbelievable. The portrayal of certain characters is annoying and whing-ey. Characters feel lacking and the over use of items sold/for sale just feels like bulking and other areas under-developed. I tried the second book and sadly it doesn't improve.

Disappointing narration

I am quite enjoying the story and the characters, but the narration is very weak. There are very frequent errors of stress and intonation, sometimes just sounding unnatural but other times interfering with the communication of the meaning. Such a disappointment!

Very slow starter

I returned this book after listening for about 2 hours.
I appreciate that the scene needs to be set but, the continuing, inane conversations of the protagonist and her friends bored me. Maybe the story improves if you stick with it but it wasn’t for me.

Pleasant enough

It took me 3 tries to get into this one. It dragged on a bit and the narration wasn't the best but once I got into it, and the characters developed, I enjoyed it. It was free with my membership so I didn't mind the narration issues. There were times I couldn't hear Maggie speak at all. And she had such a weak voice.

Lovely if predictable tale

I listen to this as I paint and it was perfect. interesting fashion details, romance, and heartache all set in a bygone era. I found the characters very predictable but I still enjoyed it.

unsatisfactory...

For me the story was very anemic, like an essay...
I really hoped that it will evolve but.... Everything including the characters was too plain and one dimensional.
The narration was bad. The narrator was trying to establish different characters, but poorly. Sally's accent was supposed to be cokney, and in the beginning the narration was cocney, but later on it turned into high society English accent, and lost it's characteristics. There was horrible rythm to the narration. It felt at times that the sentence was ending, but the after a strange pause, the narrator was adding several more words as if to finish, and it sounded badly.

When the book ended, I literally stoppe! The ending was so abrupt and unantisipated, that i couldn't belive my ears. I was left with a taste of wasted time and credit and that's a shame....
