Publisher's Summary

Evie is in the grip of a gambling addiction.

She's terrified she'll destroy the lives of her husband and two small daughters, especially with her rising debt. She grabs onto a lifeline - the offer of a program that promises to heal addictions and give her a fresh start.

Evie and 27 others from around the world travel to a monastery on a tiny Greek island to begin the program. There are six days and six challenges on the path to healing. Ten thousand dollars per challenge. Sixty thousand on completion. Enough to pay off debts and start anew.

But who is the one watching and waiting behind the walls?

Evie's husband, Gray, is gutted to find the note that Evie left behind. Why did she leave, and where did she go? When Evie's car is found burned out in woodland, the police suspect him of murdering Evie.

Gray has one chance to fly to Greece to try to find Evie before he's arrested for something he didn't do.

Too late, Evie discovers the chilling truth about the monastery and the island. And the closer she gets to finding an escape, the closer the danger gets to her.

A slow-burn psychological thriller. High adventure, dark games and chilling horror set in a monastery on a remote Greek island.

Predictable

This sounded like it would be right up my alley. Unfortunately it was only mediocre. The first half was a good set up with challenges and hidden passages.

Then the second half, the most predictable story I've endured. Full of cliches and trying to make it a thriller. That ended up making it seem like a corny 80's action show.

That said, the narrator was pretty good. I couldn't tell if she was American or Australian. I've listened to a lot from the UK and Australia.

not at all what I expected from this author whose work I normally love. this was way too violent and not fulfilling at all for me definitely not my cup of tea. but some may enjoy it.

Dark thriller

This is labeled as a “dark thriller” and it most certainly is! It may be too much for some.

Got too deep to stop listening - but then I had to

I don't normally take the time to write a review, I will use the stars and call it a day, but for this one... I just have no idea what complete nonsense I just listened to for the better part of a day. I finally had to stop with just over a hour to go, I simply could not take one more minute of this convoluted storyline. I would write more, but I can't possibly give this book anymore of my time. it's a shame, because there have been a few pieces by Anni Taylor I have really enjoyed, but this is unintelligible, go ahead and pass on this one.

Good but almost gave up on it a few times

The whole basis plot is pretty far fetched and quite a few times I was like ugh eye roll that’s so unrealistic and slow. Mainly the first 2/3 that were done through the Evie character. Other character chapters were good through out though. The end is wild and really great!

6* book!

I love this author, she writes beautifully! Characters are so well drawn. She really needs to write faster! The narrator was excellent, the other books were narrated by Caroline Lee who is a favourite of mine but I’ll be looking out for this one after this book.

Really gripping

I found this really gripping from the start. An unusual idea and although very dark avoids unnecessary gratuity while still getting the horror of it all across. The narrator is excellent and able to handle many accents convincingly. I highly recommend to any crime/thriller fans out there.

OK

As I was listening I thought, oh this is familiar ... because it is, a combination of a few stories (eg The Hunger Games & Squid Game etc). So then it's not very exciting. Just OK.

Dark Intrigue

Incredibly fascinating storyline. Draws you in and doesn't let you go. A little too graphic in places for the squeamish.

Was so impressed

I stumbled across this book by accident after listening to a previous Australian author before this title. Was really impressed, kept me gripped and as sad as it sounds I looked forward to finishing work to drive on my hour long journey home to get further in the story. If you like dark thrillers with mystery then this one is for you.

Can imagine this making a great film. Need more books like this!

Disappointing

I liked the premise of the book but as other reviewers have said, the story fell flat after the early chapters setting out the story and characters. The ending was about 5 chapters too long, with lots of repetition as different characters realised the same things. I couldn't wait for this to end. I felt that the narration was good, but the material was poor. I expected far better from this author.

can't finish

why use a narrator who can't do accents to do so many??? I genuinely can't even tell what accent she's attempting half of the time. Big miss.

DONT BOTHER

I have read a couple of books by Anni Taylor and enjoyed them which is why I bought this one. I don't know if it was just the narrator that ruined it or if it was the storyline but I just couldn't get into it. I persevered because I thought, it has to get better but it was just horrible - like it was written by a completely different author. The narrator mispronounced so many words it became hilarious to a degree. I also see lots of people disagree with me so maybe it was just me. I was going to return it so many times but kept going and now I am kicking myself.
