When I’m hired to find a missing university student, I hope to find her propped up at a bar - yet my gut tells me there’s more to this case than a party girl gone wild. In a world of darkness where royal vampires are in charge, I spend my days working as a knight in the city formerly known as London. Instead of a lance and a horse, I rely on my trusty axe, Babe, and ride the occasional dragon. Every day, new threats emerge that require a dash of magic and a dollop of attitude. Naturally, danger comes with the territory. What no one knows is just how dangerous it is for me. If our vampire overlords discover what I am, they’ll execute me on the spot — no questions asked — which is why I avoid them at all costs. Until now.

Eric didn't ask to be a vampire. In fact he didn't even believe in them. Biting your own tongue with your fangs does a lot of convincing. Even so, being a part-time undead isn't as easy as you might think. It can let you hold down a day job, true, but sometimes the night "life" can be more than a little difficult, what with those bloodthirsty urges and predatory instincts kicking in.

Publisher's Summary
Welcome to The Slaughtered Lamb Bookstore and Bar. I'm Sam Quinn, the werewolf book nerd in charge. I run my business by one simple rule: Everyone needs a good book and a stiff drink, be they vampire, wicche, demon, or fae. No wolves, though. Ever.
I serve the supernatural community of San Francisco. We've been having some problems lately. Okay, I'm the one with the problems. The broken body of a female werewolf washed up on my doorstep. What makes sweat pool at the base of my spine, though, is realizing the scars she bears are identical to the ones I conceal. After hiding for years, I've been found.
A protection I've been relying on is gone. While my wolf traits are strengthening steadily, the loss also left my mind vulnerable to attack. Someone is ensnaring me in horrifying visions intended to kill. Clive, the sexy vampire Master of the City, has figured out how to pull me out, designating himself my personal bodyguard. He's grumpy about it, but that kiss is telling a different story. A change is taking place. It has to.
I'm a survivor. I'll fight fang and claw to protect myself and the ones I love. And let's face it - they have it coming.
Contains mature themes.

Humm, it's ok, okay
I struggled with it a bit. lot of eye rolling. Some wondering attention issues. I like the premise of the story. Sam is not the heroine I would like to see in the story, in the beginning, Sam was pretty weak, pretty clueless. Sam did toughen up towards the end of the book then I started to question the insta love between Sam and Clive. I asked myself why I was still listening but then it is Monday Nite football or the book, so...there's that. To be totally transparent, I did finish it and I bought book 2 sooo..don't listen to me. lol

No plot, just one bad thing after another
This story is entirely swappable with so many others -- we're introduced to the MC, who is a likeable person/being who has been emotionally damaged and has little self-worth because of it -- so, we're hooked rooting for the underdog MC --- then it's one bad thing after another happening to the MC -- no plot, no overarching anything we're hopefully heading toward, nothing but bad things happening, narrow escapes, more bad things happening, more narrow escapes. Adrenaline, adrenaline, adrenaline. I quit the book after 90 minutes of murderous attacks and narrow escapes, when the author was starting to hint at romance ... a typical way to try to spice up an angst/action book that has no real plot. Having listened to quality urban paranormal with and without romance, but always with an actual plot, this book just doesn't live up to that standard.

Can recommend this
I purchased this book because it was on sale below the price of one credit. I purchased it before reading the reviews and then when I did read the reviews I was a little worried. But I enjoyed the book. I haven’t read a lot of urban fantasy in a while so perhaps someone might feel that this book is for the urban fantasy novice. But I felt there was enough mystery, enough bad guys, romance, and enough characters to be entertaining. It might not have been a real page turner but it did keep me engaged. The only reason why I gave the story three stars was because there were periods when the trauma scenes were a little long.

Samantha Desz brought the heroine to life. Her voice reflected all of the facets of Sam Quinn---snarky, sardonic, and vulnerable. Just brilliant.
The story was good, too, though the heroine kept making poor choices that put her in danger. I especially loved the creative world building; I really want to go to the Slaughtered Lamb Bookstore & Bar. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. More audiobooks, please!!

I bought this trying to cure another book hangover and was pleasantly surprised. Very good plot and believable romance. Not for me
Author emphasises main character is a s/a survivor yet in the first few chapters this 24 y/o woman who was assaulted at night walking alone without a light or a weapon at 17 goes for a run. At night alone without a light or a weapon. This book is set in america where you can literally buy a taser or gun in your weekly grocery shop but ok. Besides which, that’s not how any woman behaves let alone one who’s survived an assault.
The author explains over and over the m/c doesn’t like to be touched, looked at or seen as vulnerable, wears baggy clothes to be less sexual & doesn’t trust men, yet straight after, enjoys being stared at by a vamp, waxes lyrical about how hot he is and how his accent rots her brain and then let’s her male demon employee stare at her rack because he “enjoys making her uncomfortable” and then in the next sentence says he’s a nice guy. All her employees appear to be male. For someone who doesn’t trust men that’s an interesting hiring policy.
Straight after being attacked Miss No-Touchy enjoys physical contact with the vamp.
Can’t let her necklace out of her sight long enough for it to be fixed and wants to sit in the workroom with the jeweller, and in the next sentence leaves the whole ass store & swans off to get a coffee and go for a walk 5 minutes after saying she wasn’t comfortable in her own city and felt like she was being watched. Happily tells a male stranger werewolf she’s a lone she wolf 5 seconds after saying male werewolves have savage in their DNA and see loner she wolves as easy prey. And that’s just the first 5 chapters. I couldn’t bear anymore. There is only so much I can suspend my disbelief for the sake of making the plot work. This ain’t it. Sorry.

So good I just had to tell you about it.
I love Urban Fantasy but I am cursed by being super picky with what I like. Once I've listened to the best in the genre I struggle with listening to the rest. Then I discovered this gem and Oh wow what a treat! It has everything you would expect from standard UF all the troups are there, woven together by a master story teller. Seana pulls you in and takes you on an emotional journey with these characters who come off as both real and relatable with a deliciouly black sence of humor. This is all helped along by a stunning narration that perfectly captures the tone of the book. A must read for any UF fan!
