Story
It’s bad enough that its venom-dripping chelicerae can slice through flesh like warm butter. Worse? It’s right there under the bunk. It’s a fact now. To make it through the night, the children must obey the rules: don’t get out of bed, stay out of the shadows, and don’t wake the beast. But as the threats multiply, so do the rules of survival. And with the safety of dawn still hours away, the fun is just beginning.

An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

Documentary filmmaker Alice Lindstedt has been obsessed with the vanishing residents of the old mining town, dubbed “The Lost Village”, since she was a little girl. In 1959, her grandmother’s entire family disappeared in this mysterious tragedy, and ever since, the unanswered questions surrounding the only two people who were left - a woman stoned to death in the town center and an abandoned newborn - have plagued her. The reading is flat, dull, and awful
The story may be okay, but I'm having a hard time getting past the terrible reading. It's flat, dull, and has an oddly robotic cadence. I first thought it was being read by the default accessibility reader on my phone because it was so strangely robotic. There's no feeling, no warmth. The reader feels completely disengaged from the story. Since I got this through Kindle Unlimited, I'll try reading the book on my Kindle and forego the audio. I see they used the same reader or all of the Dark Corners Collection. I'll see if those are any better, but I'm not feeling very hopeful right now.

Reader makes it unbearable.
It's difficult to rate the story itself since the person reading was so bad that I stopped a third of the way in. Besides resembling a text-to-speech program, her reading of male parts was equally ridiculous and frustrating. She tried so hard to lower her voice that her delivery of the lines didn't the way anyone would say them. Rather it just sounded like she was struggling to get the words out. On top of that, it simply sounded absurd. If the story interests you try reading it instead.

Things that go bump in the night
This short story packs a punch. It’s thrilling and exciting and fast paced. The writing is phenomenal.
It’s about a woman who shows up at the Sleep Tight Motel in the early hours of the morning in her broken-down Mustang. She’s the only person staying in the motel except for the motel owner. She’s plan to stay one night. The owner is warm, kind, and friendly allowing her to hide her car in the barn.
It’s the type of short story that has you wanting more.
The narrator gave a good performance enhancing my listening experience.
