Story
Up to 40% of people consider themselves shy. You might say you're introverted or awkward, or that you're fine around friends but just can't speak up in a meeting or at a party. Maybe you're usually confident but have recently moved or started a new job, only to feel isolated and unsure. If you get nervous in social situations - meeting your partner's friends, public speaking, standing awkwardly in the elevator with your boss - you've probably been told, "Just be yourself!" But that's easier said than done - especially if you're prone to social anxiety.

What you'll find here is practical magic: unique knowledge, drawn from a variety of sciences, revealing what charisma really is and how it works. Without good social skills, you may suffer from low self-esteem that may prevent you from going out, making friends, going on dates, getting your dream job, and just having the quality lifestyle you dreamed of. Social anxiety does not have to take over your life. In 2018, Steve Bressert stated in the Psych Central study, “Facts About Shyness”, that 40 to 60 percent of adults consider themselves shy, and for most people, shyness is something that is learned later in life. Hopelessly, these adults live life poorly, not being able to connect with anyone.

A lot of good, sensible information.
There is no book written which will allow someone with absolutely poor social skills turn into a social butterfly in one night. Some oversimplify the issue and promise to accomplish the aforementioned goal with a few quick tips. Others are so abstract that - while interesting in some cases - they contain no applicable information. This one falls somewhere in between.
First, there is a LOT of information. Trying to absorb it all in one read (listen) proved to be overwhelming, so I think it works best in book form and with frequent revisiting of chapters. The book addresses a lot of areas but with a limited amount of depth. The author acknowledges and often makes reference to other works going deeper into a subject. The book makes no promises of making one an overnight social sensation, and stresses the importance of practice and hard work to improved.
This book can be - in my opinion - best looked at as a framework for forward progress in ones' social development. It contains all of the basics in every social area - verbal and non-verbal communication, overcoming shyness, overcoming rejections, changing ones' attitude towards past social perceived failures and rejection (my favorite parts of the book actually). It is a good starting point for an exploration of improving ones social skills.

A bit negative, but some good info
The author is a bit negative and projects on the reader that they’re shy and lonely and feel bad about themselves. It made it a little difficult to listen to, because I don’t identify with this. I feel anxious and avoidant, but I still act charismatic and outgoing. It’s just very uncomfortable for me, unless I’m with people I actually want to be with.

Insightful
The topics include a broad enough range of behaviors and feelings to assist most anybody who would have interest in picking up this title. I feel better prepared to find more books that touch on the topics that I identified with.
You don’t necessarily need to fit into any of the categories outlined either; this is a great resource if you are just interested in understanding your atypical friends a little better.

Seriously, this is the best
I think this book is exceptional. I’ve read other books on social anxiety and they were too depressing to get through.
This guy really relates to us and lights up the mood constantly. I find his explanations easy to understand and follow. I feel so much better now with what I’ve learned. Even though I have a long way to go to become actively social, I feel that I’m developing a great foundation.
And what else is great, he doesn’t push you to do anything crazy like saying hi to random people in the grocery store. To me that would only make me feel worse. His approach is so much better than that :)

Not bad, not bad..
Ive been around the block with this stuff and am always working on it. This one has some good ideas in that it doesnt pressure you to succeed or promise perfect success. I related to the way it angles away from social perfectionism and towards realistic progress. So far I havent heard any of the typical case studies where someone starts out somewhat socially inept and suddenly gains a social circle or a level of popularity. Those stories may speak to uni students but older readers may measure social skills and goals differently as navigating the mature adult social scene is very different. A small but really handy tip I picked up was simply to make an effort to remember peoples names and use them. The narrator explains that its a simple way of respecting others and showing you're interested and present with them. Ive noticed a big difference in the way people respond to me when I say "Hi X" as opposed to a plain "Hi". Again, simple but really effective if you work in a big place and have a goldfish memory. The ideas get better than this. He also explains the why behind the concepts rather than just telling you to go out and do them.
Im only up to chapter 4 so this isn't an overly thorough review but so far I'd recommend a listen. The only real problem I have with this book is the annoying American narrator. Not so much the accent, more the tone and lack of authenticity/believability. It also reads pretty fast and is so dense with ideas and info that I recommend a notebook unless you're some kind of recall savant.
