Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars. Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. One of the best books I've listened to
- By Joel on 01-06-20
Publisher's Summary
Hear the second book in The Long Winter trilogy!
They decimated Earth during the Long Winter. Now the Grid has returned, and they won't stop until the human race is extinct. On a ruined world, humanity's last survivors fight against impossible odds. In their darkest hour, they discover a new hope for survival. But it comes at an unthinkable price, with consequences that will change everything.
We thought the war was over. We were wrong. After the Long Winter, Emma Matthews and James Sinclair hoped life would get back to normal. They've settled down in Camp Seven and welcomed their first child, a daughter. And they have waited and watched the sky for any signs of the Grid's return. When NASA discovers that several asteroids have broken from the Kuiper Belt and are headed for Earth, James instantly realizes the truth: the Grid is back.
And this battle will be one to the very end. As he and his team prepare for humanity's last stand in space and on the ground, Emma makes a discovery closer to home, one that will change life for her and James once again. With war raging around them, Emma and James fight to keep their family alive.
In the cold darkness, humanity splinters. New alliances emerge. At every turn, Emma and James face new dangers and question whom to trust. Just when it seems that all hope is lost, James uncovers what may be the key to humanity's survival. But it comes with enormous risks. To implement his plan, he and Emma will have to survive the Grid and another, even more deadly enemy. One thing is certain: their gambit will change the future of the human race forever.

BORING & REDUNDANT WORDING
First book in the series, Winter World, was very good; HOWEVER, book 2, The Solar War wording was over-the-top redundant. Over and over the main characters, Emma and James used the same wording, talked about the same things ad nauseam. After listening to 20% of the book I just wanted to shoot myself. I just couldn't stand it anymore! I had to stop listening. I skipped to the end just to make sure the predictable and expected ending came to fruition. Spoiler alert: Unsurprisingly, it ended as I anticipated.
Gave 4-stars to the narrators, Edoardo Ballerini and Amanda Leigh Cobb; they did a nice job.
I called Audible and returned this book.
To paraphrase another review: If you love books where the main character misses painfully obvious clues and seems to consciously make things worse --- then this is the book for you,

The Solar War is a great science fiction read!
The Solar War is the pinnacle of science fiction drama. Master alien threats, love, romance, suspense, danger, ethics, science, rebirth both in the form of a baby and perseverance rewarded with a new beginning of mankind in a new world. At the end it leaves you with another mystery. Bring it on I can hardly wait for the sequel.

Boring.
I don't get the high praise for this book. It's not the worst I've ever read, but it's a stretch to even call it good.
I enjoyed the first because it was based in realism and had a good mystery. "What was the artifact?" Even once you find out, I thought it was a really cool concept that would be explored more. But this book doesn't go anywhere with it and the mystery is not only gone, but not used to any great payoff. Also, Emma's story line could have been cut completely and not missed.
[Spoilers]
Emma reading from a self-help book seemed like the author was grasping at filler for her already pointless story line.
None of the logistics make any sense either.
It takes an enormous amount of resources to launch a single rocket into space. They have no problem launching dozens at a time where the entire world is in a frozen iceball and billions are dying, and then they are even able to do it when humanity is down to a couple thousand people in a civil war. I can suspend disbelief for that but....
Also, It seems like it would be really easy for a civilization that spans the entire universe to eradicate humanity with no effort at all. Just blot out the sun like they did, then put a couple probes in orbit to shoot down anything that leaves orbit. This whole "Conservation of Energy" doesn't add up. Just do a cost benefit analysis and you would see it would take a tiny bit of your energy to mitigate any risk of humanity causing any issues. It's the entire energy output of a sun minus the cost of creating a couple sentry drones.
Also, this is a civilization that spans the entire universe, why don't you just join them. They gave you the option. Sounds a lot better than trying to fight them. It's not even like ants trying to fight humanity. It's like 10 ants inside a petri dish trying to fight humanity.

I'm conflicted - this one is good-bad-indifferent
I bought this book because I truly enjoyed book one in the series. This one kinda hits that "sophomore slump" that sequels do at times. I've bought book three because now that I'm this far invested in the overall storyline, I want to get to the conclusion.
This whole series is largely a rip-off of The Expanse - even to the main character's name, James, as well as the way the chapters are introduced "chapter 23, Emma" ... "chapter 24, James" and on and on. Like The Expanse, earth is threatened by a strange and unknowable alien entity. Like The Expanse, earth is damaged, and even bombarded with alien controlled asteroids. Maybe A.G. Riddle didn't mean to have this come out as similar - or maybe this type of story is falling in to a formula across the genre.
I like the narrators, but please, please - DON'T try to do character accents unless you're very very good at it! Oh my goodness, so distracting. Edoardo Ballerini isn't bad at it, not stellar, but OK, but Amanda Leigh Cobb should absolutely just stick with her own nice, clear voice. Good grief, I've never heard worse Australian, ?British?, Russian and other accents from her. It really seriously pulls you out of the story when they try accents - all you can focus on is "on my, they're awful at this."
Anyway, I've gotten through the first two books of this series. They're good enough to be something to listen to on the bus and it helps me fall asleep at night - the parts I miss while I'm asleep? meh, no great loss.

Yeah... I think you’re trying to impress us?
In general, I feel the voice acting for this series has been terrific. Not perfect all the time, but very good overall. However, the writing could use a lot of work!
In particular, I do not believe the author has ever spoken to a child between the ages of two and five. The dialogue for the children is extremely under developed from a cognitive perspective. Children who are capable of pronouncing the first consonant of the word dad do not struggle with the second D. Moreover, children by the age of two are capable of formulating complete sentences, even children with poor exposure to formal efforts of education.
The scientific writing regarding descriptions of the solar system, technological advancements, and the human body were much more accurate; however, they frequently felt forced. Characters rarely asked for explanations, but those knowledgable in specific subject areas would expand upon concepts not required to progress the plot. This is why I titled this response as I did. During each of the sections it felt like the author wanted to make sure the audience knew he had adequately researched the subject matter he was discussing, much like a resident attempting to impress a senior physician.
An additional problem, but more of a personal pet peeve, is the use of redundant dialogue between the first book and the second that was poorly orchestrated. It is important to ensure newcomers to the series, who start with the second book adequately understand previous events, but each time this occurred, it was done in the mind of the lead characters. This again felt forced. I suggest taking a page out of the book of any saga in which characters between episodes rehash previous events in the mind of new characters or through the lens of old characters in an effort to generate knowledge for new characters.
Finally, the overall story arc was underwhelming. All of the characters appeared to be two dimensional they show minimal growth in Antioch. There also seems to be an under developed support cast. They’re telling the story back-and-forth between the two main characters is an interesting and fun way to portray the story. Little seems to be providedIn the way of support characters beyond the main 344

Solid entry for the middle book!
The second entry in a series is often boring or lacking its own defined story. This is not one of those. It has its own story arc that fits into the bigger picture with great twists in the story line. Can’t wait for book 3! Another great story from Riddle!

Good yarn but parts felt familiar
For a sequel, this wasn’t too bad of a listen. Some of it felt too drawn out. Some of it felt like I was listening to Expeditionary Force. Arthur could be Skippy’s twin. The Narrator for Emma needs to do some work on her British accent. It was... just odd. Like Brightwell was a geordie, went to a posh public school and lost the accent but kept the pronunciation. Odd.
It’s a shame but I don’t think I care enough about any of them to bother with book 3.

Great book. left hanging at the end.
I am not a huge fan of the James Emma James Emma James Emma... you'll understand that when you read it. And the narrative by Edwardo always sounds so full of "despair" . I know they are in a desperate situation but there is some happier moments but still the tone of despair never ceases. saying all of that I still rate it very highly and will by the third the moment available.

Book 1 had so much potential 🥺
Emma has turned into a baby machine, James has turned into the always working breadwinner... in fact all of the main characters have now locked into stereotypes that made me skip chapters in order to get through the book quicker. BTW Emma is a gentecist... that's a tough, challenging field but that seems to utterly meaningless and has no impact on the story. And why the hell doesn't James discuss any of the issues arising along the way with either his partner or his supposedly cherished team members? what's the point of keeping secrets if many minds are better than one? I was sad the way this has developed 😱

Terrible don't bother
The first book was good enough for me to want to buy the second but it is so terrible I can't finish it. I wish I could get my money back.
The main female character has turned into a wishy washy side character, every time the child speaks both narrators use a creepy high pitched winey voice. The story has the potential to be good but it is just poor. Sorry. It will remain unfinished.

Awsome story, bad science
This is probably the highest rating I have ever given to a science fiction story that doesn't pay close enough attention to scientific accuracy. I love realistic sci fi and am usually quite unforgiving, but two things made it difficult to justify rating the book with anything less than four stars.
1: The author didn't completely and gratuitously throw away the real science. There is no faster than light travel and the technology the humans have isn't much more advanced than what we have today.
2: The story is very good. Not going to leave any spoilers, but it's clever and has interesting twists.
I'm not a rocket scientist or physicist, s o there are probably a lot more problems with the science than I could detect, but these are the ones that threw me in the series:
1: Sending out a spacecraft to one destination in the solar system and the pilots of that spacecraft just deciding on the spot, you know what, lets go to some other destination instead... and then another.
2: Navigating debris fields in space. No. You just die.
3: The sun is getting dimmer and dimmer every day, so much so that when they decide to leave Earth it's all pretty much dark... but then during their tour of the solar system on the way out they somehow get stunning views of Mars and other celestial bodies? Really? If Earth is dark, how do planets even further away from the sun get illuminated?
4: The fact they could even do a tour of the solar system. The voyager spacecraft were only able to do the tours they completed due to a narrow launch window offering a once in 175 year planetary alignment.
Definitely worth a read though.

Much better than first book
The story picks up and focused a lot less on female emotion and relationships this time. Very nice twists on the story and excellent turns. Looking forward to the next book.

A poor sequel to the excellent first book.
Where I found the 1st book to be quite well written with an excellent attention to detail found this sequel to be far less impressive. Not sure I'll bother with the 3rd now. While the performances of the narrators were great and carried the story a bit the underlying plot was at times a bit far fetched and poorly thought out. It's almost like this book was more of an attempt to shoe horn the 1st book and the 3rd book into the same narrative universe and characters than its own real story of its own.
My biggest problem is that this books plot basically rests upon the supposedly genius main character and antagonist being not only stupid but in ways inconsistent with their established motivations. All the while trying to tell rather than show that they really are actually geniuses and motivationally consistent still. For example conservation of energy and underestimating the uppity humans May have worked brilliantly in the 1st book but here it doesn't make sense apart from the characters telling you it does, even the ending acknowledges this obliquely (though probably not consciously intended by the writer).

A truly terrible and horrendously boring sequel
Straight out of the gate here, Ballerini, as usual, does a phenomenal job, however, if you thought The Matrix Reloaded was a terrible sequel be prepared for amazement.
It's very apparent that locking the narrative into just two characters has hindered the potential of this story, especially these two characters. Although James continues to be the only super genius able to save Earth, Riddle has relegated Emma to a moronic, and emotionally stunted, child-rearing mess only suitable for being a house-wife. Yes, Riddle took the Ex-Captain of the ISS and made her a terrible side-kick with all the emotional intellect of a potato. {insert drinking game for every time bone density is raised}
I thoroughly enjoyed the first book, even with its endless plotholes and zero originality, it was good ear candy but this book just drags, especially in the second act. My major issue is that none of the supporting characters have been fleshed out enough for me to really care if they live or die.
Disappointment doesn't come close to the feeling I have with this sloppy and downright lazy mess.

Great story, but the narration...?
I really enjoyed this book, despite the bad reviews. The only thing that bothered me was the accents from the narrators!! Their English accent was weird, but that Australian accent was just plain BAD. It was a mix of New Zealand, British and Jamaican... not much Australian. As an Aussie this bothered me more than it should!!

Not his best work
the last hour had the most promise, but like most of the book, evaporated into nothing
