I’m one placement away from becoming a fully fledged London detective. It’s bad enough that my last assignment before I qualify is with Supernatural Squad. But that’s nothing compared to what happens next. Brutally murdered by an unknown assailant, I wake up 12 hours later in the morgue - and I’m very much alive. I don’t know how or why it happened. I don’t know who killed me. All I know is that they might try again.

Story
Decades ago, the High King of Sundolia waged a war that vanquished the Serpent clan and drove them out of the empire. But they did not leave peacefully. Their parting gift included curses that now rest within the empire's soil, growing more and more dormant as the years pass under the rule of that increasingly tyrannical high king. Until Alaya - a young woman with a hidden Serpent mark who shouldn't exist - accidentally wakes one of them up. Then another. She must seek the truth about her lost clan and the so-called curses they left behind. About her true home.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Publisher's Summary
The old gods are growing restless. An ancient evil is stirring. Can they stop the coming storm?
Mercenary Casia Greythorne cares about two things: completing whatever her latest job is and earning enough coin to buy the expensive medicine that's keeping her mentor alive.
So when the king himself offers her a job, she can't resist the massive reward he offers - even if it means working with Captain Elander, the arrogant, mysterious right-hand to that king.
Her partner may be infuriating, but at least their mission seems simple and quick enough: investigate the origins of the strange plague that's been ravaging their empire, help find a cure, and then call it a day.
But in a land brimming with old magic and meddling gods, nothing is ever that simple, and nothing is ever what it seems.
As the bodies pile up and strange monsters begin to wreak havoc throughout the realms, Cas and Elander will have to work together to protect their world whether they like it or not. Because one thing is clear: Something ancient and evil is stirring in the shadows of that world.
And their empire will not survive its full unleashing.

Very good narration
I really enjoyed this story! It has some fighting, romance, and fantasy (my type of book). The narrator did an amazing job using different voices for each character, she also puts a lot of emotion into the dialog. Normally I don't really write reviews, but I noticed one of the other reviews stated the world building was a bit confusing. I would recommend reading the Queen of Cursed Things series first. It is set in the same world and a lot of the gods and powers are explained in that series (and it seems to take place before The Song of the Marked ). So, when I started this book I recognized a lot of names and terms used. You don't need to read it first to understand (or enjoy) this book, but in my opinion it helps. Overall I really enjoyed this book and I'm currently reading the second one.

A little slow at first
It was a little slow at first, but finally picked up. I liked the premise of the story, characters were likable. It was interesting to see a main character have anxiety being an issue instead of just self-doubt. Anxiety plagues everybody at some point but many people suffer with anxiety. It’s interesting to see a character written with such. The narrator is fabulous! Looking forward to book 2!

Ehhhhh.
The book starts out okay, decent world building and sounds kind of interesting at first, but is a major let down. Most of the important stuff that happens is all info dumped disguised as dialog. And throughout the story the main character is supposed to be portrayed as a “strong independent woman” but most of the time she just sounds like a child throwing a tantrum. The story also doesn’t have a resolution- I know a lot of series continue on but each story has a beginning middle and end and this one just has a beginning and middle.
Also, “It’s not cliche if it’s done right”, but this story is definitely not done right.
I did finish it because the chemistry between the main character and love interest is written pretty well. It’s obvious the author enjoyed writing those scenes, but it doesn’t make up for the rest of the book.
Will not be picking up the next one.

Weak or Strong?
Is she so strong that she is weak? Or so weak she only pretends to be Strong?
I really wanted to love this character. How could I. She starts out Badass and becomes Weak and Gulible. Why?
The voice actor was amazing! Alot of the one on one dialog was great. But the story line just left me frustrated. ugh grrrr
I have absolutely no desire to continue with this series. Yes. I did complete this book

Hold on to your seat
I was not prepared for the epicness of this book! Cas and her band of rebels are tight knit and definitely enjoy some shenanigans, but when a bet puts Cas in the sights of non other than the kings second, life turns sideways for all involved.
The banter between Cas & Elander alone was non stop and perfect. The adventures and mythology were one of a kind and that ending... omg that ending!

That narration!!!
That accent!!!
Ok so I read this as an audiobook and I was just so thoroughly surprised and I enjoyed this so so much. The narrator was absolutely fab. There was so many different accents that it really separated out every character and made them so individual. I never knew I could find a women narrating a man so sexy haha Scottish accent was just *chefs kiss*. It really made me invest in the relationship built up!!
Had just the right amount of spice for this budding romance I think. It was all about the build up of how much they really started to care for one another! Loved it.
Felt like it sort of got a bit info dumpy towards the end because one minute you couldnt really tell what was going on or the magic system and then next it was all laid out to you in a matter of minutes.... or maybe I was just to invested in the growing romance haha
Overall I really enjoyed and cant wait to move onto the next.
