Publisher's Summary

From the author of Simplicity Parenting comes an elegantly simple and inspiring plan to help parents set limits, correct behavior, and influence a child's decision-making by playing three specific roles: the Governor, of younger kids; the Gardener, who watches, listens, and decides on the right course of action for school-age children; and the Guide, who collaborates with increasingly mature teenagers.

My parenting go to

This is my parenting guide that I will always keep by my side. With any challenging time I can come back to it and be grounded in wisdom. I recommend this book to all parents, even before I recommend simplicity parenting! (But I also have and recommend simplicity parenting too!;)
My only issue with this audiobook is the reader. Simplicity Parenting was read exactly as Kim John Payne wrote it, all inflections and tones well placed. Not so in this book. This reader gives tones to sentences when they’re aren’t any intended. I have taken classes with Kim John Payne and have had the opportunity to speak with him outside of class too. He is the most even keel person you’d ever have the pleasure to meet. So, in this book, when he writes what parents might say to their kids it’s intended rather matter of factly, no sing songy , or demeaning sounding inflection or tone. ie:”Now Johnny, we don’t say those words in our home.” Wouldn’t be “Nooww Joooohnyyyy, We Don’t saay thoOose words in our hommme.” It’s hard to write how the reader uses a tone and inflection that is not intended with this book, but please know that the recommendations here are usually intended to be stated as simply and with heartfelt respect and warmth as possible. I wish they would have used the same reader as in simplicity parenting because tone and inflection are important.

Painfully slow and far too broad

This was the second audiobook I purchased when looking for help disciplining my 3-year old. The first, 1-2-3 Magic was returned almost immediately. The whole "system" sounded like a sales pitch. The Soul of Discipline started much better - the first couple of chapters had me excited that I might have found something that I could use. Almost 3 hours later I found myself utterly disappointed.

It's obvious now, but at the time I didn't think a book written for children of all ages would be a problem. In fact, I thought the opposite. It would be advice for now and advice for the future. The problem with this format is that you're listening to advice for solving 3 separate problems when you only need help with one. So a chapter begins with help that is topical for somebody with a child my age. The next 20 minutes discusses a similar problem and how you would deal with that for a "tween" or a teenager. This format may work in print where one can easily skip ahead, but is horrible for audio.

The book has such good reviews. I'm afraid I'm not one of the believers. Time for me to look elsewhere.

Transformational

Every parent ought to read this book, and then read it again and again so as to let it transform the whole family for the better. Heck, the whole world.

Great Parenting Book

As a mother of two boys and a Pediatrician, I highly recommend this book as well as the Simplicity Parenting book. Kim John Payne gives an essential description of children's development and implementation of discipline according to every stage. Parents will finally have a better sense of their kid's overall behavior.

Yawning before chapter 2

I hope I can't get through the book, but I am having trouble paying attention. The narrator is a little dull. I mean, even he sounds bored. Not sure if he went to broadcaster school or what, but his inflection doesn't seem natural. It's too bad because I have listened to a lot of the author's podcasts, and I was looking forward to this book.
