Publisher's Summary

Wren Blythe has long enjoyed being among the Northwoods, helping her father with programming at a youth camp. But when a little girl in the area goes missing, an all-out search ensues, reviving the decades-old campfire story of Ava Coons, the murderess, who still roams the woods. Joining the search, Wren stumbles upon the Coons cabin ruins and a rotting porcelain doll. But even more terrifying is seeing her name etched on the doll's foot like a sinister omen.

In 1930, Ava Coons has spent the last ten years carrying the mantle of mystery since she emerged from the forest as an eight-year-old girl, spattered with blood, dragging a logger's axe. She has accepted she'll never remember what happened to her family.

When a member of the town of Tempter's Creek is murdered, rumors spread that Ava's secret is more malicious than previously imagined.

Both women discover that to save the innocent, they must face an insidious evil.

I am Speechless!

Oh my goodness, this is such a wonderful story! (Two stories really.) I was in on the edge of my seat or in tears many times. There is so much raw emotion in these characters. So real.
Kathryn Markey's narration was Excellent! The feeling she put into Jaime Jo Wright's words was truly moving.

Could not finish. Narrator was over the top.

The narrator was way too over dramatic. I could not take the story seriously.

It’s a bible camp

The missing piece in the book’s description is that it’s not just a camp, it’s a bible camp. A year round bible camp. This might be a selling point for some, but was ultimately a huge turnoff for me. If you can get past all that, the narrator really isn’t the worst

misleading title

so I was expecting a supernatural horror story. instead I got a book about how to be a good Christian. by the end of felt like the author was so caught up in what it means to be a good Christian that they forgot they were supposed to be telling a compelling story. was I surprised by who did it? sure but not in a good way. between the misleading description and the complete lack of clues provided to the audience there was no chance to figure out out.

Great story but…

Loved the story. I’ll read more of Jaime Jo Wright. But the narration was horrible. I was only able to finish it by bumping up the speed a lot. Too much affected drama. Her reading was soooooooo drawn out. She just tried way too hard.

Terrible narrator ruined the listening experience

First, the narrator’s voice was instantly irritating. Secondly, the narrator’s voice made it extremely difficult for me to follow and/or understand what was going on in the first two chapters. Thirdly, the narrator’s voice was a major distraction. I had to pull off the street into a parking lot to turn off the story.

Clean suspense

I love the clean writing style. It's so refreshing to read a book with Christian themes, but not "churchy"! The narrator wasn't my favorite. The speech pattern was drug out waaaayyy too slow and over the top dramatic. However, it was made tolerable by adjusting the narration speed on the Audible app to 1.20x.

can this narrator have more saliva or what?

it was so gross and frustrating to hear the narrator slurp/suck in her saliva every other minute. I think there was even a gulp. it totally ruined things.

Pleasant surprise

Thai author is new to me-so happy I discovered her! Interesting story, a few twists & surprises, no foul language or overly descriptive sex scenes. This author knows how to create “clean heat” & romance!
Good mystery, enjoyed it much!
Christian overtones-but not too heavy.
Kathryn Markey did an awesome job bringing these characters to life-like listening to a play.
Highly recommend!

Loved it!

Personally I loved the narrator. I thought she was perfect for the book. I agree the performance can make or break any audible book. And I'm pretty picky. I say bravo
