Story
Joe De Sena has spent his life running toward challenge and discomfort. Why? Because how we react to challenging situations defines us and our families. The only tools we have as humans to survive the many peaks and valleys of a full life are preparedness, health, leadership, and most importantly, resilience. Why do so many parents struggle to finish things we start, delay gratification, and protect our health - and why do our kids continue to struggle in every facet of life? Because we haven’t showed them a path to resilience, and we haven’t fought for it ourselves.

Publisher's Summary
New York Times best-selling author Joe De Sena, founder and CEO of Spartan, the global health and wellness platform, leader in obstacle racing, and executive producer of NBC’s television show Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge, challenges you to live the Spartan way.
Determined to yank 100 million people off their couch cushions to start living instead of being passive observers of life, Joe De Sena has one ultimate goal: to help improve everyone’s physical and emotional health by teaching them the tenets of Spartan living from ancient Greece: simple eating, smart training, mastering resilience, and an all-out commitment to achieving a goal.
Like Spartan training, living the Spartan way requires endurance to reach your finish line, the goal that inspires and drives you to succeed no matter what obstacles are thrown in your path. De Sena believes you can gain that endurance in just 36 days by following the 10 Spartan core virtues, timeless principles to help you embrace adversity and overcome any challenge, and making them a permanent part of your own personal core.
The Spartan core values include:
- Self-awareness - know yourself
- Commitment - be dedicated
- Passion - discover your purpose
- Discipline - practice diligence
- Prioritization - put your house in order
- Grit - push your limits
- Courage - face your fears and your failures
- Optimism - look for the positives
- Integrity - act honestly
- Wholeness - live as a Spartan
De Sena turned this philosophy into a lifestyle - and so can you. With The Spartan Way, you’ll discover your true north, unleash the warrior within, and transform your life to 10 times your maximum potential.

Don’t know what to think...
Inspirational? motivational? Joe De Sena has created a commercial success with the Spartan life and more power to him, and if you enjoy the Spartan races - good for you!
I thought I was into it and was gearing up to tackle a trifecta next year so I purchased this book to inspire me, but as the audio went on, it started sounding more and more like a infomercial bordering on a cultish recruitment session. This may be due to the fact I started listening to Joe’s podcast at the same time.
Repetitive chanting of phrases can inspire and focus - but at a certain point after keying into it - I couldn’t get past the sales pitch quality and became disengaged and just had some guy gruffly speaking at me with what is basically a sales pitch for adapting the Spartan way of life (now with Spartan branded shoes).
Wish I could have been inspired by this, and if you are I applaud you and congratulate your ability to key into this life and accept the Spartan challenge. I still an on tackling that trifecta... so this didn’t put me off of racing, just don’t think I’ll be sporting any branded gear or listening to the Spartan podcast or buying anymore Spartan books.

Unnecessary and inappropriate language
If the approach and narration coming from a wannabe mobster doesn't turn your stomach, then the inappropriate and untimely F words certainly will. I know the original Spartans were tough; surely they didn't have to tell anyone that they were and use vulgarity to prove it!
Ps Joe - continuous cussing does not make you tough. However, it does weaken your message and take away from your credibility as an author. I'll pass for something more intelligently presented.

Nothing to do with Spartans.
Probably the weakest book of its type that I've listened to. the narration is fine but the whole book is just the author trying to sell his Spartan race business to the reader/listener.
I strongly suggest you skip this book and listen to David Goggins instead. or just listen to both and you will know exactly what I mean!

It was a good book with a lot of good ideas and principles but I could not help but feel as though it was written by Billy Badass. I will take a few good nuggets from this and I do have to say that the final story is inspiring but most of the book was him stroking his ego.

didn't sweep me off my feet the way I hoped
the narrator delivered the book well. it had some inspirational stories but failed to like that spark in me to actually get off my ass and train. I am aware however, that might be less of the books fault and more of my own. felt like more of an advert for the spartan races at some points.

Some gems within the book but narrator did nothing for the book
No doubt there are some great bits of advice, but the narrator makes it into an instructional text book, the book could be so much more had it been delivered in a more personably way I think, I did take things from it but wasn’t the most enjoyable book.

Some of this information was useful to me
I find this audiobook hard going
Some of the information was useful but for me I feel it lacked compassion
It came from the toughen up school which has its place but to me that is only one aspect of the way forward
Still it was useful
Would have liked it to give it 2 1/2 stars
Also the presenter was off putting for me
