How bogus

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I just got this book and it is nothing but a repeat of all her other books,I could have sat down and done this.WHY no NEW story? Not worth the money I paid it is so repetitive.

What was most disappointing about Jennifer Estep’s story?

It is just a repeat of all of her other books

Have you listened to any of Lauren Fortgang’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I love the way she reads a book

What character would you cut from The Spider?

I wouldn't delete any of the characters but lets get moving on some of theserelationships

Any additional comments?

Oh Fudge, I wasted money on this....

Would you try another book from Jennifer Estep and/or Lauren Fortgang?

As long as it something original, not a trip down memory lane.

Did The Spider inspire you to do anything?

To wait for someone else to be the first to download it, and wait for the reviews... If I had done that, I wouldn't have wasted my time on this book!

A True Disappointment!

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

The entire book is Gin recounting details that we already know about her past. She "mysteriously" ties in absolutely every character in the series to one ill fated hit that confirmed her as The Spider.

Any additional comments?

Overall I got the impression that Ms. Estep was rushing to meet a deadline much to the detriment of what to this point has been an enjoyable series.

Not The Best In This Series!!

This book is mainly about the Spider's past, mainly a past job she did!! In every book in this series you always had those chapters that talked about a past experience. But this one was the whole book, except its beginning and ending.

Ending was good, I have enjoyed its ending. Also, during the book you keep on meeting characters, which the spider didn't know them back then, but they play major part in her future, that was kinda cool.. it reminded me of Lost the TV show.

Lets talk about the bad part, which made me dislike this book.. The Tin Man kept on thinking there is something fishy about this job and it was so obvious from the beginning, I wasn't shocked at all when the spider understood everything and whats going on... That is the main thing that made me dislike this book I like to be surprised.

But you get to know more in her past and how she used to do her job with the Tin Man.

Glimpse of the past...

First thought when finished: The Spider showed a younger Gin and Fletcher. It was nice to see Gin's beginnings even if she wasn't nearly as likable or smart as she is older!

Overall Thoughts: I will admit that while I loved getting to know Fletcher while he was alive that I was often distracted by how "unfocused" Gin was at times. This is actually brilliant of Jennifer Estep as Gin was just becoming The Spider but it was hard, as a reader, for me to separate the Gin I love from the younger version. Though I think seeing a younger Finn, Rosalyn, Owen, and everyone else was delightful. They didn't have huge parts so it was easy for me to see sparkles of who they are to become but be OK with their younger selves. I think my problem with Gin came from how long it took her to "figure" out the case. Especially since I felt that the bad guy was a little more obvious this time around. However, I had a good time listening to The Spider and the time spent with Fletcher were my absolute favorite scenes in the story!

Audio Thoughts:

Narrated by Lauren Fortgang / Length 10 hrs and 43 mins

Lauren Fortgang nails Gin and crew! This is a must get in audiobook series for me!

Final Thoughts: Counting down to the next book!

Great book

Story line was good but it kinda makes it seem like a small world with all the characters in it

Rehash

What disappointed you about The Spider?

Not a new story. I should have read the reviews first, and read this book for free from my library. Although, the summary of the book is clear that this is from her past, it just felt like I knew everything in thie book already.

What could Jennifer Estep have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Maybe just a hint of new story in there, but I am more disapointed that I spent money/credits on this book.

What does Lauren Fortgang bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Lauren does a great job with the voices and accents. Makes my commute enjoyable.

Any additional comments?

save your money and get this from the library.

Don't understand the low reviews

Lauren's performance was great as always. And I really enjoyed learning about how Gin's experiences when she was younger shaped her to be the person she is now. Overall, I really liked the story.

Too Coincidental

Would you listen to The Spider again? Why?

Yes, I think it is a very interesting situation and I like to root for the underdog myself.

What other book might you compare The Spider to and why?

I have no comparison

Have you listened to any of Lauren Fortgang’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

As far as I can remember other than this book and the previous books in this series I do not believe I have listened to any other books narrated by this individual.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I just did. These are not very long books so I usually listen to each one while I work and it is over by the end of my shift.

Any additional comments?

It is very Coincidental that most every important character has been there in the past for Gin in one way or the other. All of the important people in her life fell into this rendition.

Not as good as all the other books by far

Would you try another book written by Jennifer Estep or narrated by Lauren Fortgang?

If I had read this one first probably not. However i LOVE Jennefer Esteps books and Lauren Fortang is perfect for being Gin ....and Finn and JoJo a very talented woman and a great choice.

Would you recommend The Spider to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes because its part of the series and the charactor we met may be in future books.but It just wasnt the same with Gin being 10 years younger and not really The Spider yet,I know that was the point as its an oragin story but still I missed her smartness and ability to read people and everythingelse she gains from this story.

Which character – as performed by Lauren Fortgang – was your favourite?

Gin , as she rocks in all of the other books.

Do you think The Spider needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

another book in the past? No. I like the flashes of the past and the insight that gives us in the books set in the here and now but I dont think the oragin story needs the follow up.However I am itching to start the next book in the series.

Any additional comments?

I love this book series but this one was a disapointment,

Really?

The plot is good however by adding characters from her life to her past even didn't sit well with me. Owen gave her a lift 10 years ago and asked her on a date, really???? and she met Bria and her forster family at a party ? I think this annoyed me as much as her ...."he will be dead in 1 minute...2 tops!"....

Love the series but this one is patronisingly ridiculous

I love this series, I really do, and think maybe its just because I read so many books that I occasionally get frustrated that Gin isn’t piecing things together as I think she should do as the apparently renowned assassin she is.

And she can even be forgiven for her naivety in this book, because it is of course part of her origin story and where she learns some valuable lessons that will hold her in stead for the future. The fact that you’d think she’d have been employing a few more of those lessons in her previous books and not be so free and easy with who finds out who she is or dismisses clues way too easily aside - the books and series are still good so I’ll let it go.

But there is a particular aspect of this book that is just ridiculous and frankly patronising to the reader. I’m really quite disappointed by the author on this one and hope the future books in the series don’t make the same mistake.

I’ll even let go the absolute ridiculousness of Owen showing up as a mystery driver in this book

(****SPOILER ALERT****)

BUT - Gin not recognising her own sister?!?! And as a child no less?! When she apparently instantly recognised Bria from a photograph as an adult?! But she doesn’t recognise her as a 15 year old child in person?! when she’d look more than ever like the kid she’d last seen?!?! What an absolute joke and quite frankly insultingly to the reading audience. I’m so cross about this. There was no reason to bring Bria into this story, not in person, except it seems Jennifer Estep was incapable of not bringing every single character into it whether needed or not - it’s condescending, patronising and quite frankly poor writing. I am so very disappointed she took this step, that her editors didn’t suggest this might be slightly ridiculous.

The sad part is the actually story here, Gins assassin origin story is actually a good one, but it was ruined for me by this absolutely ridiculous action.

I seriously hope that the remaining books in the series do not patronise the reader in the same way.
