Story
Two lonely hearts. Just once, Alex Emmerling would like to be someone's first choice. She's strong-willed and spunky, but she's left picking up the pieces from her ex's lies and manipulations, and daydreaming about taking a scalpel to his scrotum. Flying under the radar is what Riley Walsh does best. He's laid-back and loyal, but he wants the most off-limits woman in his world, and nothing will ever make that a reality. An arrangement of mutual benefit.

My mother's New Year's resolution for me was simple: make a serious effort at putting myself out there and dating again and do it for one full year. Or, until I fell in love. Whichever came first. How hard could one year of swipes and matches and awkward first dates be? In a word: bad. In nine words: bad and also hilarious, demoralizing, exhausting, and ridiculously amusing.

I'm leaving you this note because I know you're very busy, and I don't want to waste the town sheriff's time. Lord knows I've already wasted enough of it. Thank you for taking me home last night and...everything else. I made you a basket of wild blueberry muffins for your trouble. That seemed like the appropriate baked good for getting naked in your living room. I wasn't myself last night. I didn't mean to kiss you or fondle your backside or ask all those intimate questions. Thank you for pretending to enjoy it.

The first time I met Merrick Crawford was during my job interview. Well, technically, I’d met him 20 minutes earlier when he’d barged into a fitting room a few doors down from my appointment. I yelled. He yelled. After an argument while standing in my bra, I proceeded to smash the door into the gorgeous jerk, trying to yank it shut. As you might imagine, I was freaked out when I discovered that the rude guy was my potential new boss. Yet he didn’t seem to recognize me. Or so I thought.... Until we wound up bickering again during my interview and he told me to go sniff my armpit.

After I’m arrested for throwing a raucous party, my hockey team says I have an image problem. And I need to fix it, stat. Charity work? Check. Haircut? Sure. But I draw the line at hiring my neighbor to style me. In the first place “style” shouldn’t be a verb. And I’m tired of people who’d judge me on appearances. Vera and I don’t see eye to eye on anything. She wants me to try on clothes, while I just want to remove hers. She's distractingly pretty, with soulful eyes and a sinful mouth that likes to argue with me.

Am I friends with JP Cane? Ha! That's laughable. Besides the fact that he’s adopted some far-fetched notion from the movie When Harry Met Sally that says men and women can't be friends and work together, it’s safe to say we're not friends. He's annoyingly loud, obnoxiously handsome, and has made an art out of poking all my hot buttons...multiple times a day. So you can imagine how disgruntled I am when I not only have to fly to San Francisco with him for work, but stay in the same penthouse. Yup, we're sharing the same air, 24-7. We're talking full-fledged working roommates.

I've been dreading this for a year. Okay, that's a lie. I've been dreading this reunion since we graduated high school 10 years ago. So why am I here, standing outside the door like the eternal wallflower I am? I'd say it's because my younger sister browbeat me into it, but the truth is, I'm tired of being a nobody. Of never taking a risk with myself and my life. And...well...maybe I'm also hoping to see him. The tall, insanely gorgeous man walking my way now. Oliver Fritz is regarded as one of Boston's sexiest doctors. I know him as the former god of our school.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Or does it? Okay, let me explain. I broke into my crush’s dressing room to sniff his tights (not in a pervy way, I swear!) and got busted while, um... you get the idea. He then kind of, sort of blackmailed me into agreeing to a fake green card marriage with him. But hey, I’m not complaining. Next thing I know, we’re on a flight to Vegas to make our friends and family think we had a crazy drunken night and, in the spur of the moment, tied the knot. Except… that’s exactly what happens.

Reasons why I should not be drawn to Troy Serrano. Number one: He’s obnoxious. Number two: We were enemies more than a decade ago. Number three: He’s my friend’s ex-boyfriend. I could go on and on, really. When my boss gives me an unwanted assignment, and tells me it involves spending time with the grandson of one of our residents, the grandson turns out to be Troy. Lucky me. Four hours a week of having to deal with his insufferable personality and unsolicited advice - the only consolation is getting to stare at his annoyingly gorgeous face, in between our many arguments.

You've Got Mail <3
When Erin Walsh agrees to go back home for her bother Matt's wedding, she knows it won't be easy. Nine years ago she packed up her things for college in Hawaiii and from there she went all over the world as a respected volcanologist. She was fleeing a past of abuse, self-harm and, most of all, she wanted to stay away from her big sister, Shannon and they haven't spoken ever since.
She's assigned a "baby-sitter" at the wedding, the bride's brother, but pretty soon she sees herself spending time with Dr. Nick Acevedo, the groom's best friend. There is an instant mutual attraction and when Erin starts to feel overwhelmed she asks Nick to get her out of there and they end spending the night around town. She dares him to steal a boat, but he finds a boat captain willing to take them on his lobster fishing run. It turns out the captain is an ordained minister... and yeah, you guessed it, they get hitched on another dare!
Their relationship as a married (in secret) couple develops through a series of emails and texts and the long distance (continents apart) can take its toll. Will Nick be able to get Erin to finally come home?
I had been really curious about Erin. We know from previous books that she's estranged from her family but only learn why now. It's a Walsh book, but this one is heavily centered on Erin and Nick. The story is cleverly told through their written exchanges, a modern day epistolary romance. I confess Erin frustrated me a little at times but I understood her. Nick is grade A book boyfriend material! Swoony! Great book!
Narration: Christian Fox bringing all that southern charm to Texan Nick. Le swoon. Lucy Rivers amazing again.
Possible triggers: past emotional and sexual abuse by a parent; FMC spent time in a psychiatric facility; history of self-harm (cutting); past attempted suicide (slashed wrists); MMC is a pediatric neurosurgeon and mentions medical situations and loss of patients

Erin & Nick
It was good to finally get the full story behind Erin's rift with her family. Like Will in Shannon's story, Nick is the only person who fully understands Erin and see's how the Walshes treat her like she's still the rebellious teenager - that her scars are unique and so deep that they couldn't comprehend - and becomes frustrated with their attitude toward her. I love how Nick stands up for Erin to her family.
All the Walsh children have their own wounds and atrocities visited on them by their father and each handled the abuse differently. Erin acted out recklessly and self-destructively in attempts to drown her pain and distance herself from her siblings. She confides in Nick, a stranger, the night they meet before her brother's wedding. While they don't fall in love that night, they recognize a deep connection with one another and he makes her feel safe - something she hadn't felt around a man or wanted from one in a long time. They "marry" on a lobster boat that night and spend the wedding weekend together, knowing she'd still leave, returning to her work in Europe. Over the following months and years they get to know each other and truly fall in love through emails and video chats and the precious few times they are able to be together, all the while Nick tries to convince Erin to make peace with her family - namely Shannon - and stop wandering the world looking for excuses not to come home. He understands that Boston holds more bad memories for her than good, but it's where he is and he wants to be on the same continent, under the same roof, with his wife.
This is a bittersweet story that makes you ache even more for these siblings and the atrocities they suffered and admire them for managing to grow into any semblance of functioning adults. I must say that I didn't see the twist with Riley's secret crush. That just about floored me.
My only criticism of this story would be that Nick seems to use a lot of words to get his point across. I don't know if this is something that is typical of people from Dallas or Texas in general, but it was annoying at the beginning of the story. It got better as the story progressed, as if he learned to speak with a greater economy of words because he knew he didn't get much time with Erin to spend on them.
I've enjoyed Christian Fox's narration of the men in this series so far, but feel like his Texas accent was a bit over the top at times in this story. *UPDATE* My opinion of Christian Fox's Texas accent has changed because I've listened to this book many times since my initial review and I love it now. This is my favorite book out of the Walsh series and Nick is my favorite non-Walsh man. Wish there were real-life Nick's in this world or that they were as easy to stumble upon as Erin did.
Lucy Rivers' portrayal of the men of this series, making them sound like slow-witted frat boys, continues to be my only issue with her narration.

Book 6 And I’m Still Hooked
Kate Canterbary please never stop writing family series!! Erin Walsh is the sister who has been running away from her family drama to natural disasters instead. I did not even think she would end up with that hot man. Didn’t see that coming. The Spire just keeps me in love with the Walsh family.
This books were practically made for Christian Fox and Lucy Rivers amazing narration.
