Story
When Jude agrees to lend her vintage chaise longue for the local Amateur Dramatic Society’s production of George Bernard Shaw’s The Devil’s Disciple, little does she realise she’ll end up in a starring role. It’s an ambitious play, culminating in a dramatic execution scene: a scene that’s played for real when one of the leading actors is found hanging from the specially constructed stage gallows during rehearsals. A tragic accident - or something more sinister?

Glorifies animal abuse
I’ve loved all of this series so far but couldn’t finish this book as the casual acceptance of animal cruelty was upsetting.
One of the characters happily takes money from wealthy people to look after their horses, despite the fact that they want her to act in an abusive, harmful way. Another horse is injured due to being ridden too hard, with none of the absolute horror that that should engender in the characters. Jude is a healer, not a vet. For goodness sake, get that poor animal some proper medical help and stop promoting the idea that it’s ok to not take its suffering seriously.
Some of the characters casually mention what a shame it is that hunting is now illegal in the UK, without any attempt to tell them that this is a good thing: it was banned because it’s immensely cruel.
The two main characters go to the races and enjoy it.
In England, horse racing is not a popular form of entertainment. The majority of people recognise that it’s cruel and don’t watch it or bet on it.
Jude certainly wouldn’t pay money to the National Hunt to attend a racing day and she most definitely would report a business that was turning a blind eye to suffering animals to the RSPCA, not continue to be friends with the owner.

Bit more meaty........
As always, I really enjoyed both the story and reading. I particularly enjoy the relationship between Jude and Carole and the gentle unfolding detail about their backgrounds. Beware though, this story has some fairly heavy themes running throughout. It is more hard hitting than some 'cosy-style' detective novels but still enjoyable for all that.. I just hope that Mr Brett doesn't feel obliged to join the more harrowing style of modern crime fiction, as this is really enough for me to drift off to sleep on!

Another Very Good Read
I say read ...though I listened via audible . Am completely hooked by this series !
This one , slightly darker in story line but moves along at a good pace .
Simon Brett is a great story-teller and has the accents making you forget it’s just one
narrator. Enjoying the continuing reveal of the characters too .
