Publisher's Summary

A compelling coming-of-age adventure from legendary SF master and multiple New York Times best seller Robert A. Heinlein.

Lummox has been the pet of the Stuart family for generations. With eight legs, a thick hide, and increasingly large size, Lummox is nobody's idea of man's best friend. Nevertheless, John Stuart XI, descendant of the starman who originally brought Lummox back to Earth, loves him. But when Lummox eats a neighbor's car and begins to grow again, the feds decide that enough is enough. John isn't about to let the authorities take his pet away, and with his best friend, Betty, he determines to save Lummox - even if he must forever leave the life he's always known.

loved it!

A little predictable, but otherwise large hearted children's story about tolerance, cultural differences, and not judging a book (or alien) at face value.

Fun Heinlein book

the narrator did a superb job of portraying Heinlein's work. The book doesn't age as well as some of his others, but I found it a fun re-read

Another entertaining Heinlein story

These Juvenile stories are very entertaining and gripping but this one has some discussion which I find to be above the juvenile level.

Well done!

In the wonderful spirit of storytelling, this tale is brought to life. I have always been a fan of Robert A. Heinlein's twists and turns, the subtle nuances incorporated which make the difference between a good story and a great story. I hope this audible reaches many more generations to come!

A case of mistaken identity

Robert A Heinlein's The Star Beast is typically included among his juvenile offerings, but this one is less geared towards youth. The story is basically an alien creature regarded as a pet that has been in the family for several generations but turns out to be long lost alien royalty. A teenager is the creature's owner and with the aid of an aggressive and assertive teenage girl, they handle every problem that comes their way which includes a hostile town and mother.

Heinlein opens the tale with the creature's adventure which leads to courtroom drama. An Earth bureaucrat must navigate and alien diplomat engaged by another alien species to which the creature belongs. These interchanges are humorous at time with a dash of slapstick escapades as orders are lost and no one knows what everyone else is doing. While overall entertaining, this is more adult themed in that children would find much of this boring.

The narration is adequate with brisk pacing.

Why have I read all of Hienlien's writings two ti~

- times, and now I'm listening to round four, it's more than just good writing.
For one It's because all of his stories are "hard science fiction" stories. While being very entertained I learn how to tell a well grounded adventures. The man does not write "action stories, " yes there is action, but the stories are about people that I can believe in. Hienlien's heros get it wrong, before they press on until they get, or make it right. What's more, his tales contents are both subtle, and correct. As I listen I repeatedly flip to "Google" to clarify the meaning of a word; I'm learning as I lidten.
It's a delight being carried along through a story by an author with a better mind, and a better imagination than my own.
As a boy of 12 I chanced on one of Robert's first stories for teens written in the early 1950's, after which I was in love with both science, and speculative fictions. ' Ultimately I came to see my world through the same eyes as Robert Heinlein, his philosophies became my philosophies, his beliefs my beliefs, not all, but more than a few.

This story is fascinating, kid friendly, and not annoying like his later books. Loved it.

Lovely story, well read

I really enjoyed this one. Quite short though.

I’m sure it would be enjoyable for children too - I certainly did when I first read it as a child.
