Story
Epictetus, a Greek stoic and freed slave, ran a thriving philosophy school in Nicropolis in the early second century AD. His animated discussions were celebrated for their rhetorical wizardry and were written down by Arrian, his most famous pupil. Together with the Enchiridion, a manual of his main ideas, and the fragments collected here, The Discourses argue that happiness lies in learning to perceive exactly what is in our power to change and what is not, and in embracing our fate to live in harmony with god and nature.

Where can you find joy? Gain strength? How should we face our fears? Deal with the death of a loved one? And what about those reoccurring depressing thoughts? While traditional schooling doesn’t address such questions, it’s exactly what ancient schools of philosophy were all about: They taught you how to live. Even though these schools don’t exist anymore, you and I and most people are in as much need of a philosophy that guides us through life as we ever were. Be honest. Have you ever had that feeling of emptiness that is created when you feel powerless after failing again and again in achieving the goals that you set? If you have ever felt like this at least once in your life...I know exactly how you feel, you are not the only one who has thought about this. Believe me, I tell you that I spent the nights wondering what I was doing wrong, if my life was doomed to failure and if only a few people had the "luck" to get incredible results both in terms of money and in terms of relationships with others. Then, one day I knew what I had to do.

Stoicism is a pragmatic philosophy that teaches us to act depending on what is within our control and separate things worth getting upset about from those that are not.

Do you feel as though something is missing in your life? Do you often feel like your emotions get the best of you? Do you run into trouble within relationships with people at home, at work, in a business, or whatever because you feel like you need to control the situation? Stoicism is an ancient Western philosophy whose simple, time-tested teachings of virtue, confidence, and self-control have inspired generations of scholars and spiritual practitioners...one of its main tenets is that we don’t always have control over what happens to us, yet we do have control over how we react.

Must be listened over and over again
This is most obviously a stoicism beginner's book, but that's precisely what I needed. There are a few terms that stand out in the text that I'll go through individually. Definitely something that has to be listened to again and over in order to develop the habits and strengthen our thinking intellectually.
