Publisher's Summary

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was first published in 1866 and has gone on to become one of the most told Gothic stories of all time.

I cannot believe that it has taken me this long (being 56 yrs old to have just now read this story). I obviously knew about the story and the broad strokes, but to have NOW read it on my own...and seeing how this story is revealed was really interesting.

I don't think it is outstanding, but quite good.

I kept wondering, while reading, whether he was in control OR was it something that was happening TO him. Well played, indeed.

The idea of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, being two personalities, but I hadn't realized that Mr. Hyde was all the base feelings that Dr. Jekyll had...and none of the good feelings. Interesting. That is a topic I had missed in the cultural knowledge of this story.

The meddlesome people who were trying to figure out who Mr. Hyde was, is something that social media seems to be, today. When people get overly interested in someone and the go overboard (which commonly happens in social media) and how people combat this. Just a thought that came to mind.

I'm glad that I finally read this story on my own. Wish I had MANY years ago. Oh, well. Better late than never. Right?

Given a much deserved place horror history

short and sweet with many elements of what would one day inspire the first cosmic horror writers.

That’s it?

The narrator is excellent. The story is good but felt like it was missing an actual storyline. It seemed to end abruptly and left me thinking, “That’s it?” Overall it is enjoyable and thought-provoking, and I wish there were more to it.

Restrained Performance Fails to Elevate the Story

It’s not that the narrator is bad, it’s just all a bit muted. For a story filled with excess of emotions, the reading is just a bit bland and restrained throughout, failing to capture the passions of Hyde or the true regret of Jekyll.

Very Poor Writing and Reading!

I don’t write reviews often but I want to save some one time. Don’t waste your effort to listen to this! Very confused writer that has a even worst narrator that can hardly be understood.

Excellent narration

I'm not a huge fan of this story (it does go on!), however it is told with an expression and vitality that brings it to life; I found it dull to read, and much better to listen to.

Wonderful Story, Almost Wonderful Performance

The narrator unfortunately lacked the ability to pronounce every word correctly, but good all the same. I would just warn you ahead of time that you will likely be drawn out of the story at points. Fantastic in almost every way, I just wish that when narrators find themselves unsure as to how to pronounce something they would look it uo rather than just taking a random stab in the dark.

Not for me.

For clarity, I only listened to an hour of this before I had to stop. The story didn't grip me and unfortunately, I just couldn't get into it. Sadly the narration felt bland and didn't engage. The character voices were better but it still didn't work for me. There was drama in the voices but not in the narration. Overall, it just wasn't my cup of tea.

In One Ear and Out The Other

The story is good, but the narrator really brings it down. He's just someone you don't want to listen to. The guy sucks all the excitement out of the book. Such a mundane and withdrawn voice! Why they thought this was a good idea I have no idea. Do not recommend.....

Poor narrator

Can still hear the his lisp even though it’s subtle you begin to listen for it rather than what he’s actually saying very annoying

Will written

Didn't have much prior knowledge of the story so wasn't sure what to expect. It's very well written and the old style of writing is enjoyable and not a barrier. It's a short story but I wish it had been fleshed out a little more, but then a decent book should leave you wanting more.
The narration is very slightly unusual but I felt like it suited the writing, the characters, and the atmosphere of the book. I didn't pick up on any mis-pronounced words like another reviewer said. Listen to the sample - what you hear is what you get, there's no surprises.

Absolutely Perfect

I loved this edition of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde! The narrator, the brilliant Paapa Easiedu, stayed completely true to Stevenson's story, and narrated it not like a story, but as though he were watching the tale of morality and duality unfold in real time

Could have been better

The story was ok, however the narration was very stiff and could have used more emotion. I felt myself falling asleep rather than being engaged.

Great Story by Robert Louis Stevenson

Pàpa Essiedu narrates this story of good and evil very well with different voices for different character's.

At last Audible have done the chapters correctly by having each chapter titled as the book is and each chapter is separate. As most of the time they have chapter's inside of chapter's.
