Story
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Publisher's Summary
Named a best book of fall 2019 by People Magazine, Boston Globe, BookBub, PopSugar, CrimeReads, and more.
“Brilliant.... A well-crafted psychological thriller.” (The New York Times Book Review)
When former journalist Rain Winter was 12 years old, she narrowly escaped an abduction while walking to a friend’s house. The abductor was eventually found and sent to prison, but years later was released. Then someone delivered real justice - and killed him in cold blood.
Now Rain is living the perfect suburban life, spending her days as a stay-at-home mom. But when another criminal who escaped justice is found dead, Rain is unexpectedly drawn into the case, forced to revisit memories she’s worked hard to leave behind. Is there a vigilante at work? Who is the next target? Why can’t Rain just let it go?
Introducing one of the most compelling and original killers in crime fiction today, Lisa Unger takes listeners deep inside the minds of both perpetrator and victim, blurring the lines between right and wrong, crime and justice, and showing that sometimes even good people are drawn to do evil things.
Don't miss Lisa Unger's newest thrilling and chilling novel, Last Girl Ghosted!

Did I listen to a different book
I read the reviews here and looked forward to a book I couldn’t unplug from. I’ve finished the book and am still looking. In fact I finished the book because I hoped I’d find it. I didn’t.
First, the performance. There were two narrators, a woman and a man. Both were ok, but I got lost trying to figure out which character was talking. When the woman was narrating, it was typically as the main female character, Rain. But she also spoke the men’s responses to her. And there was no difference in inflection or tone between the men and women. Same when the man was narrating, typically as one of the male characters, usually Hank. But then he narrated the women responses to him. Again, no difference in the voice.
Another annoyance was the way the book jumped back and forth in time. When the main characters were kids and the defining occurrence happened. And when they were in college. And present day. All without announcing they were leaping back or forward a decade or two.
I probably listened to this book three times because I had to keep going back a chapter to two to figure out where I was and who was talking. And at the end when I was well ready for it to be over and done, it dragged on and on. This book could have been much shorter and missed nothing. It was as if the author was trying to expunge her own history to get it off her chest.
Finally, the main female character was the typical person in a thriller that you want to tell ‘don’t go in there’, ‘don’t do that’ because she’s heedless. I understand some awful things happened to her as a kid, but do you want it to happen again? Her husband had the patience of Job as she lied to him and took unnecessary chances.
I’m glad this book is done!

Excellent listen
Lisa Unger is a good writer, but I think she went to another level with this book. Some of the thoughts of one particular character made me feel like Unger reached deep inside herself to express true emotion.
The narrator did an excellent job. She really portrayed the characters with the emotions emitted from the writing.
Spend a credit on this book or even buy it. It is that good.

My favorite mystery of the year
I am an avid mystery/thriller reader who recognizes the abundant number of talented mystery writers out there That said Lisa Unger has just lit up the sky like the 4th of July with The Stranger Within. She is the Pied Piper of her genre. She will grab you and pull you gradually, then explosively into her book. You will be there in person feeling all the feelings of her characters and in awe of the plot line and brilliant twisty remarkable ending. You will come away saying “if I were going to a desert island and could only choose one book it would be this one.” Kudos, Lisa. I was in the publishing world where I was inundated by incredible reads. You still stand out like a sore thumb

My first Lisa Unger....def not my last
I have heard wonderful comments about this writer so I had to have a listen. I was not disappointed. This book kept me on the edge of my seat for almost the whole listen. There did seem to be a lot of repetitiveness which was......well, repetitive.......Lots of unexpected twists and turns that left me with my mouth hanging open while I was listening and driving. Other drivers probably wondered what I was doing. The female narrator was very easy to listen to but the male was a little monotone at times to the point of making me tired. I cannot wait to listen to another of her books.
