The white-washed Italian villa is perfect. I thought it might feel odd, living in a stranger’s house for the summer, but as my husband and children swim in the infinity pool, I start to relax. And then, in the back of a wardrobe, I find something that shatters everything.... Sparkling green eyes, square jaw, lopsided smile. A young man with his arm around a beautiful woman. The picture is old and faded, but I’d recognize him anywhere. The man is my husband.

Amazing
I have to say I could only put this book down to take care of housework ect. But I also have to say the ending was a HUGE disapointment. For heavens sake, after I stuck with this story and loved it so much to have it just end was terrible. There was so much more to be done to finish it. I don't want to discourage others from reading it , because there were so many good things in this listen. Suspense was incredible, and I so wanted this to turn out much different. I can't say much because I don't want to spoil it for others, but after Callie went through so much with this dispicable, messed up family, I wanted more for her in the end. So many times I wanted her to just walk out on the whole bunch of them. James the father was an oblivious idiot who should have stayed around more to see what was going on in his own family. He didn't need a wife , he needed a shrink. And the boys needed serious attention. The story kept me tied in knots, and even after all my rants, I still consider this a listen to recommend. While I was listening to the story, I was thinking I want to read more of her books, but now I'm afraid I'll go all the way with another and find the ending just as diapointing. Write an epilogue or more of the story next time and don't leave the reader going WHAT, ARE YOU KIDDING.

Drama Queen with a capital D
Would you try another book from Kathryn Croft and/or Lisa Coleman?
I read Behind Closed Doors and it was much better than this book.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I would have made Callie not so self-centered. It got old and made me feel very sorry for anyone in her life who had to deal with her!
Which character – as performed by Lisa Coleman – was your favorite?
The narrator was great, she did a good job with making Callie sound the way she is portrayed in the book.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Maybe it would make a better movie than a book. With books you get to hear everything inside Callie's head and it was the same thing over and over. I never heard anyone so paranoid, delusional and so much a drama queen about every little thing. At least in a movie you won't get bored with her "poor me" mantra about every aspect of her life.
Any additional comments?
I finished the book reluctantly - several times I wanted to give up from being sick of the main character feel sorry for herself and make a big huge deal about every mundane thing. The ending was just OK. I didn't try to figure it out because I didn't care enough to want to.

Should've Listened
I read several reviews, both positive and negative. I told myself, to give this book a chance, what a mistake I made. I should've followed the advice of one of the reviews which in part said that the main character gets to be unnerving, with her whining, poor me attitude. You want to shake her and say "snap out of it". She reminds me of that girl friend you like as a person, but after spending a couple of hours with them you feel drained, frustrated, angry and irritated. I want a book to take me away and not to a place I avoid in reality. I've learned my lesson regarding reviews, they are there for a reason.

The Bloody English
They make more coffee and more tea in this book than you could possibly believe; complete with descriptions about how each cup tastes.
Callie's decisions are so painfully stupid I want to slap her, but it's like watching a train wreck. You have to see it through to the end.

Mixed Feelings
Liked the overall story and the narrator's performance, but thought the book moved a little too slow and the ending was pretty ridiculous. Much preferred the author's book, Behind Closed Doors, because it was extremely suspenseful! Will probably keep this selection, simply due to it being only a couple of bucks. However, sincerely believe there are plenty of others worth listening to first.

Flat narration spoil us a great story
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
No, I'd recommend the book, not the audio as narrated.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Stranger Within?
A few twists along the way and I missed a couple, so it's constantly exciting.
What didn’t you like about Lisa Coleman’s performance?
I found the voice flat and bordering on boring. The story kept my interest, but not the telling.
Any additional comments?
The story, at first, seemed a bit trite, but I became more involved as a few different threads emerged. It's well plotted and more complex than I first imagined, so worth sticking with overall. Some thought provoking themes throughout.

In truth I found the story a little bit boring and predictable. Became a bit fed up of listening to the woes of a want to be mother. I did not connect to her character at all.
Listened to it all but was a struggle.
Don't understand the great reviews, but that's just my opinion.

How many cups of tea does it take??
The main character certainly drinks a lot of tea! At all times, in every scene it seems, a kettle is being boiled for the bloody tea (or, to make it more exciting, coffee occasionally).
The tea-making is, unfortunately, one of the main take-aways from this book for me. Unbelievable story, and some uncomfortable (to put it mildly) choices made by the main character. The fact that no one seems to like her is telling, and therefore makes her marriage unbelievable.
I seem to be in a minority as not enjoying this. I did listen to the end, but won't be rushing back for more. Maybe my dislike of cups of tea made me too judgemental?

Has potential
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Hmm, I'm not sure about time well spent, but I must admit I wanted to keep listening til the end (it's a page-turner, a beach-read), even though I felt fairly sure where the plot was going and that there would be a twist coming. It was the Daily Deal so I gave it a listen on fast mode, and found it quite diverting background noise as I went about household chores. The characters aren't very nice, there's really only one truly sympathetic one, and the whole idea is too sensationalist, doesn't take promising threads as far as I thought it might, is depressing subject matter, but I gave it a go.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
It kept giving me a similar feeling to reading Before I Go to Sleep, in that I was suspecting one or more of the characters knew more than they let on and the reader would be kept in the dark until the final twist, which is sort of what gripped me, but I was disappointed that this never materialised. What you hear is what you get: I thought there was going to be more to it.
What does Lisa Coleman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
She projects the sensation of heightened paranoia which makes the book quite a compulsive listen.
Do you think The Stranger Within needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No, I'm not sure I'd want to be in the company of these characters any longer, I feel I know all I need to about them, and the twist/cliffhanger ending can keep dangling as it is.

Can't stop thinking about this compelling novel.
Would you consider the audio edition of The Stranger Within to be better than the print version?
There are some novels that I'm certain are improved by great narrators but this novel, even though it's read by the quite superb Lisa Coleman, will be equally superb in the written form too. Great writing and a terrific listening experience.
What did you like best about this story?
I loved the sheer strength of the characters and the story-line which are nothing short of compelling and unforgettable. You might think at the early outset that you just know how things will turn out but forget that because you'll mostly be wrong!
Which character – as performed by Lisa Coleman – was your favourite?
Easy to say that the lead female character, Caroline, was a favourite, but this means under-valuing the rest of the compelling and important characters that make this such a memorable novel.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Many, many moments in this great book moved me through various emotions but none as powerfully as the final chapter.
Any additional comments?
Read this book over 2 days because it was so well written and SO well read by the wonderful Lisa Coleman who never over-plays any parts of the novels she narrates. Always her 'pitch' is quite perfectly suited to the book. I just can't stop thinking about this whole listening experience. Quite special and how to follow this one?? Next one asap please Kathryn Croft.

Four stars
It was hard to empathise with the main character at times. She makes a lot of cringe worthy decisions. Four stars for the plot twist ending you won't see coming.

Loved it all the way through. Ending was unexpected. Narration was great too. Would definitely recommend.
