Story
The Girl of Sugar Beach is the most watched documentary in television history - a riveting, true-life mystery that unfolds over 12 weeks and centers on a fascinating question: Did Grace Sebold murder her boyfriend, Julian, while on a Spring Break vacation, or is she a victim of circumstance and poor police work? Grace has spent the last 10 years in a St. Lucian prison, and reaches out to filmmaker Sidney Ryan in a last, desperate attempt to prove her innocence. As Sidney begins researching, she uncovers issues that were all overlooked during the original investigation.

Publisher's Summary
A chilling murder in a prestigious prep school is at the heart of this riveting new novel from acclaimed author Charlie Donlea, featuring forensic reconstructionist Rory Moore and her psychologist partner, Lane Phillips.
Inside the walls of Indiana’s elite Westmont Preparatory High School, expectations run high and rules are strictly enforced. But in the woods beyond the manicured campus and playing fields sits an abandoned boarding house that is infamous among Westmont’s students as a late-night hangout. Here, only one rule applies: don’t let your candle go out - unless you want the Man in the Mirror to find you....
One year ago, two students were killed there in a grisly slaughter. The case has since become the focus of a hit podcast, The Suicide House. Though a teacher was convicted of the murders, mysteries and questions remain. The most urgent among them is why so many students who survived that horrific night have returned to the boarding house - to kill themselves.
Rory, an expert in reconstructing cold cases, is working on The Suicide House podcast with Lane, recreating the night of the killings in order to find answers that have eluded the school, the town, and the police. But the more they learn about the troubled students, the chillingly stoic culprit, and a dangerous game gone tragically wrong, the more convinced they become that something sinister is still happening. Inside Westmont Prep, the game hasn’t ended. It thrives on secrecy and silence. And for its players, there may be no way to win - or to survive....

Seriously, I was CRINGING every time those stupid boots and stout were mentioned. If I had a nickel for every time they NEEDLESSLY come up, I'd have a penthouse in Manhattan. Only a slight exaggeration. I was praying that the main character would die so that I wouldn't have to keep hearing about how "her mind" works. The author has zero trust in his audience so absolutely beats it into your brain that Rory is on the spectrum. There are better ways to convey that than to constantly, explicitly bring it up. We get it, she's a savant and only Lane knows how she thinks. We get it, she's very particular about shoes and beer. Where was the editor?!
All that being said, I really love Charlie Donlea's books, this one included. At no point did I even suspect the major plot twist, and normally I'm pretty good at that. I also appreciated the subtle nods to his previous books with the inclusion/mention of prior characters. I'd rank this below The Girl Who Was Taken & Summit Lake, but quite a bit above Don't Believe It and Some Choose Darkness. It was a lot to keep track of, and at times I was wishing I had a book in my hand so I could go back and keep characters straighter, but ultimately it was a very satisfying book.

Different
This is another one of those books that I was looking forward to reading. So far so good, I like the premise of the book – it’s different. But it moves very slowly. As a thriller, it is best there is a lot of activity and less explanation. Books that feel they need to go back decades and explain stuff are boring to me. Overall it was interesting and pretty good

Too many flashbacks
The number of flashbacks made the first half of this story a little dicey. It was a bit difficult to follow since multiple characters were involved. Rory and Lane, while central characters, aren't as present in this second book of the series. I didn't care much for the narrator. I'm not sure why the author went away from Nina Alvamar, but he needs to get her back for any future books. Still, the plot was good and it held my attention.

This was the laziest book I’ve ever listened to. It’s like the author was soooo proud they googled regional and specific products that they mentioned them CONSTANTLY. The story was compelling enough (barely) the keep listening but if I had to hear about dark lord beer, madden girl boots, that stupid doll and those dumb brushes one more time I was going to scream.

Very repetitive
I found the first book of this series quite good, but this second one annoyed me. Is the author sponsored by Madden Girl and Dark Lord Stout? The number of times Rory’s footwear and drink of choice is fully described as these, one would think so. And the detailed and unnecessary description of some underground doll collector auction?? I’ll probably try the next one, here’s hoping she’s wearing different boots..
