Publisher's Summary

In her most masterful novel of medical suspense, New York Times best-selling author Tess Gerritsen creates a villain of unforgettable evil - and the one woman who can catch him before he kills again.

He slips into their homes at night and walks silently into bedrooms where women lie sleeping, unaware of the horrors they soon will endure. The precision of the killer's methods suggests he is a deranged man of medicine, propelling the Boston newspapers and the frightened public to name him "The Surgeon".

The cops' only clue rests with another surgeon, the victim of a nearly identical crime. Two years ago, Dr. Catherine Cordell fought back and killed her attacker before he could complete his assault. Now she hides her fears of intimacy behind a cool and elegant exterior and a well-earned reputation as a top trauma surgeon. Cordell's careful facade is about to crack as this new killer recreates, with chilling accuracy, the details of Cordell's own ordeal.

With every new murder he seems to be taunting her, cutting ever closer, from her hospital to her home. Her only comfort comes from Thomas Moore, the detective assigned to the case. But even Moore cannot protect Cordell from a brilliant hunter who somehow understands - and savors - the secret fears of every woman he kills.

Filled with the authentic detail that is the trademark of this doctor turned author...and peopled with rich and complex characters - from the ER to the squad room to the city morgue - here is a thriller of unprecedented depth and suspense. Exposing the shocking link between those who kill and cure, punish and protect, The Surgeon is Tess Gerritsen's most exciting accomplishment yet.

Audible needs to re-record this book.

The narration errors in this Rizzoli and Isles audio book are so profuse they detract significantly from the story itself. Not only does the narrator mispronounce one of the lead character’s name every time she says it (Elena Ortiz), but she is woefully poor when it comes to medical terms (saline, capillaries). Audible should be ashamed of itself for allowing this book to continue to be sold in its current state.

That said, I found the Rizzoli character interesting, as compared with the television version. The story is keeps one’s attention – but, as indicated above, the narration mispronunciations detract from it.

GREAT STORYLINE==HORRIBLE NAEEARION

RIZZOLI IS NOT VERY LIKEABLE IN THIS STORY UNTIL THE END, BUT THE HUNT FOR THE SURGEON IS FAST PACED AND EXCITING.

THE NARRATION IS SO BAD YOU CANT TELL MALE FROM FEMALE AND WHEN SEVERAL ARE CONVERSING YOU DON'T KNOW WHO IS WHO.

SO 5 STARS FOR THE STORY AND 1 FOR THE NARRATION.

Too Many Mispronunciations for my liking...

Wasn't this book written/released in 2020? Why couldn't they find a narrator who knows how to pronounce medical terms? I mean why not use Google search the proper way to pronounce words like 'saline' or even the color 'cyan'? Hint, Saline does not sound like feline and Cyan is not pronounced C-yan! Why, Why, Why??🤦🏾‍♀️

Characters were well done

I probably would have given 5 stars if I had read the book. I kept getting distracted by a few “off” pronunciations of names and words.
Overall, though, good enough for me to get the second in the series.

Excellent story, poor narration

Well written and suspenseful. Narrator kills certain words though, which I really don’t understand. How did this get past the editor? But while annoying, still a good listen.

Not what I expected

I have binge watched Rizzoli and Isles and enjoyed ever episode. I do not know about the other books in this series, but I truly disliked the way Rizzoli was depicted in this particular book. But books and shows are always different, so I understand. The story line was not bad. It was nice the way the investigation unfolded. And at times, it made you wonder if what YOU believed was really the truth, which is always nice. I think I would have enjoyed it more if there was a different narrator. I've listened to her before, and never had an issue, but in this book at times I couldn't tell which character she was until she said..."said Moore". I will try to read one more, because I want to see how Isles comes into play, and if Rizzoli will become a main character (because she wasn't in this book, in my opinion. It was Moore). Overall, not bad.

Superb Thriller!

Excellent Thriller!
First time reading this author. She's on my radar now. The only negative was with the narrator in the audio book who consistently mispronounced words. Luckily it didn't ruin my overall experience. Tess Gerritsen is an outstanding writer.
