Publisher's Summary

The Surrogate is a thrilling, high-stakes debut centering on a vulnerable newborn and two women who will do almost anything to claim her as their daughter. With a collection of vividly rendered characters, this twisty tale will leave you thinking about the true meaning of motherhood long after you turn the last page. I loved it!” (Patry Francis, best-selling author of All the Children Are Home)

Ruth is a no-nonsense 40-something journalist from the Midwest desperate for a child with her new husband, Hal. Their hope rests with Cally, a 19-year-old who wants to go to college - but doesn’t have the cash. The arrangement seems perfect for everyone.

But within a day of the baby’s birth, Cally has a change of heart - and engineers a harrowing escape from the hospital with the newborn. When Ruth and Hal discover that Cally and their daughter are gone, a whole series of doubts and secrets is revealed, and the difference between right and wrong is no longer clear.

Set in the vast, sparsely populated upper reaches of Northern Minnesota in the middle of winter, The Surrogate follows Ruth, Hal, and Cally through a maze of thought-provoking questions about the nature of family, love, and relationships: What would you do for your partner, when the going gets tough? How much is a pregnancy “worth”? And who, if anyone, “deserves” to be a mother?

Spectacular - Couldn’t put this book down!

Loved this book. The writing was amazing. Reminiscent of Jodi Picoult books. A perfect blend of weighty issues, drama, humor and suspense. The audible performance of it was superb. Highly recommend.

Why all the good reviews?

I don’t understand all the great reviews. This book was so bad. The characters behaved so stupidly that I didn’t care what happened to any of them. The storyline line seemed fake and unbelievable with everyone making absurd choices right and left. The narration was average at best but the worst was the narrator for Ruth. Overly dramatic to say the least. Hard to finish - almost couldn’t.

Not one likeable character

Predictable story where the worst characters get rewarded in the end. 🤮 Ruth exploits absolutely everyone.

Wonderful and touching

Oh I absolutely love books written in the style. I like how the author told the story from all the characters point of views. Having several different narrators also made this book a much better read. The two main female characters are strong women, but I confess that I did not like Hal or digger. I’ve found Hal to be cocky and self absorbent. Very unattractive! Lol all in all, I totally love the book and absolutely recommend it if you are a Jodi Picoult fan! This book is written in the same style.

Poor presentation of surrogate issues

I almost quit listening as Ruth was such a disgusting character I couldn’t stand her. For a supposed award winning journalist she had no self confidence no sense of self, was totally self centered and a control freak; hard to understand how anyone could love her. Being a biological mother doesn’t change that or turn her into a maternal being which requires looking outside yourself and giving fully of yourself. Yes I saw the issues being examined but a more likable protagonist would have made the issues more clear. It was more a story of a bunch of highly dysfunctional supposed adults with a baby in there some place which they were supposedly going to parent. There were a couple likable characters, but they were overwhelmed by the over all dysfunctional. Not a favorite book of mine at all.

Shallow

The characters are naive about life and make big decisions with little forethought. The first 90% of the book was like a sophomoric drama with little redeeming quality. But with some hard lessons learned, the last 10% took my initial low rating up to a likeable rating. This is not going in my favorites, but it's not terrible either.
