Publisher's Summary

A shocking double-murder scene greets Detective Inspector Philip Brennan when he is called to a flat in Colchester. Two women are viciously cut open and laying spread-eagled, one tied to the bed, one on the floor. The woman on the bed has had her stomach cut into and her unborn child is missing. But this is the third time Phil and his team has seen such an atrocity. Two other pregnant women have been killed in this way and their babies taken from them. No one can imagine what sort of person would want to commit such horrible crimes. When psychologist Marina Esposito is brought in, Phil has to put aside his feelings about their shared past and get on with the job. But can they find the killer before another woman is targeted?

Had trouble pulling myself away

Very interesting story line, everything pulled together in the end, and Mark Meadows did a wonder job reading it, nice voice, easy to listen to

Interesting story

I did not find gratuitous descriptive violence as some reviewers asserted. The end was a little bit of a letdown and I don't feel emotionally attached to the protagonists yet as I have been with some series. I will listen to the next book to see if I become invested. I like the narrators voice.

Neanderthal sexism and police brutality

The main character had no qualms about engaging in the worst kind of misbehavior because the means suits the ends. His love interest and ersatz professional police profiler can't stand on her own and requires him to protect and save her. "Phil, I cannot survive if you don't fly to my rescue as I am impotent in the face of danger." Rubbish all around. Embarrassed that this was written by a woman who seems to consider herself "woke" and enlightened.

IInfant murder and abuse too graphic.

I can’t get the disturbing images and details describing newborn babies being murdered out of my head. It was too hard to listen to. Even though the narration was great.

Thought I had it...

Every time I thought I had it figured out, another twist which led to not being able to stop listening. I love it!

Transphobic AF

This book was gratuitous and on top of that relied on cliched language and unrealistic dialogue. But worse so, treated sexual misconduct by police officers as no big deal. And even more unfortunate, was just the most transphobic book I’ve encountered. Listened to the end, driven by curiosity if it was really THAT bad... curious if maybe it would rectify its sexism, transphobia, bad handling of stigma around mental health... nah. It stayed bad. Don’t bother even if u got it for free like me.

Grotesque

VIOLENCE , GORE, & SADISTIC. Trash passed off as a novel. Disgusting tripe. How this could have been published is beyond comprehension.

Great story

This was really good. I appreciated the character developments and the dark twisted plot. A great crime/serial killer storyline.
