Investigative reporter Marty Edwards has found her niche: cold cases. She loves poring over old notes, hunting down long-forgotten witnesses, and digging down through the layers of an unsolved murder case. But this time, Marty is digging where someone obviously doesn't want her. And that someone might also include the Brownsville Police Department. Why else would they assign Detective Kristen Bailey to baby-sit her? Barely surviving two attempts on her life, Marty abandons Brownsville and the case. Danger follows her as the case turns red-hot.

FBI Agents Cameron Ross and Andrea Sullivan found the unexpected when they met amongst the warm red rocks and cliffs of Sedona - each other. That commitment, along with their ingenuity, courage and resolve, will be tested along the most barren of stretches in California's Mojave Desert. Someone is using the bleak highways to dump women's bodies, but in a landscape where an inviting road can curve into a sand-choked mirage, and a true oasis can be invisible under a white-hot sun, clues can blow away in the wind.

disappointing
Shoot me, but I'm going to be honest here. I would not have finished this, except for the fact that Abby Craden was narrating. And I love Gerri Hill so wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt. But unfortunately this just did not cut it for me.
I felt that the characters were one dimensional and I have met them in many Hill books before. Except normally the author gives them nuance and depth, which makes them interesting and relateable. The plot was contrived and simplistic, unlike Ms Hill's other mysteries I've read. This really felt like a finger exercise. I pay a lot for credits, due to a poor Rand Dollar exchange rate. Hence my inability to be forgiving. I wish I had bought Weeping Walls instead!
OK so after i wrote this, i realised the book was released in 2007. So that may explain it. I'll be more careful in future.

Suspense with romance who can ask for more?
It was a nice surprise to find that this is connected a little to the book I listened to before The Killing Room. The story takes place in the same area, one of the main characters in the Killing room appears in this book at some point, so it is nice to know she is OK as well.
The book kept me on the edge of my seat so to speak. Loved the characters and the plot, oh my, it was fabulous.
And last but not least Abby Craden, did I say that she has this voice that does it for me? Well she does...

Ridiculously Good!
Ok of course I love Gerri Hill and Abby Craden. who doesn't? My favorite duo on audible!
This audiobook was so good! it had characters who were so easy to like, suspense, witty dialogue, adorable flirting, action... steamy sex. I wanted to listen to it all at one time. I finished it in 2 days.
a detective is asked to keep an eye on a senator's daughter who is hiking with a group of women because there were threats. the senator's daughter quickly falls for the witty stranger who appeared with a bandaged ankle and quickly was part of the pack of hiking women on a spiritual sort of journey/workout.... the women are running for their lives and climbing cliffs while gunshots are zipping past them. I absolutely loved this listen!

As an avid hiker I really enjoyed the descriptions of the mountains and wilderness. Fun, fear and fright..Wow!
The story will give you the full gamut of feeling, from joy to sorrow, from the love of friends to the love of family. It has fear and fright, and finally, it has fun. How Hill manages that in one book, I don’t know. The story is easy to listen to, and if it were a book, I’d say it is unputdownable. I didn’t want to pause it at any point.
Abby Craden does an exceptional job with narrating this, which with a group of women, must have been a challenge. I didn’t get confused about things at any point and thought it easy to differentiate the different voices, both male and female.
The contrasts of the story are what stand out for me. The peace and fun at the beginning is a direct contrast to the middle of the book. At this point, the suspense ratchets up and, in turn, changes further as the story unfolds—the final section, which is no less frightening for Sarah and Jaime, is entirely different.
