The reasons can be different: to regain lost form, due to health problems, allergies, or intolerances occurred over time, etc. Most of the time, though, they don’t work. One of the problems with dieting lies in its psychological aspects. When you decide to follow a food program, you often face it with enthusiasm for a few days, but you give up after days or weeks.

Placing conditions on our lives and our happiness has become the norm: We must establish a career before looking for a relationship. We must find love before feeling fulfilled. We must feel stressed out until we finish everything on our to-do list. But by far, the most common conditions we put on ourselves revolve around our weight - no love until we lose the weight, no pursuing a dream until we lose the weight, no happiness until we lose the weight. But now there’s a better option.

Publisher's Summary
Why are certain women able to stay thin and never, ever diet? What is different between these naturally thin women and those that can only struggle to thinness through obsessive diet-like behaviors? The book explains the significant body of science which finally reveals the differences between the brains of thin and overweight women. It details the alterations in the brain that occur from years of overeating and dieting - and how to reverse them. In a personal and accessible style, the author guides the listener through an easy to follow step-by-step program based on cognitive behavioral therapy. The book's program does not include any food restrictions, or recipes. It does not prescribe any specific exercise program as its sole objective is to restore the brain to its healthy relationship with food.
You will learn how modern foods and ancient survival mechanisms have interacted to create an obesity epidemic. "Famine" brain, high-stress lifestyles, reduced pleasure from food and other factors are examined. Once you understand how your brain has inadvertently gone awry, you will appreciate this sensible approach to "rewiring" you brain back to its natural state - the thin woman's brain.

A new weight loss paradigm!
I first purchased the audio version of this book and its message resonated so strongly with me during the first listen, I immediately started it over and listened through a second time! I have read dozens of diet books, both practical, how-to types and general theory about nutrition and weight loss. Every one of them had left me with unanswered questions. Why do gain the weight back every time I lose it? Why do I have to spend every minute of every day obsessing about my next meal or snack in order to stay on a program? Why am I finding it harder and harder to stay committed each time I attempt weight loss…again??
Dilia Suriel answered all those questions for me and opened my eyes to the real underlying issue – my brain. Clearly, I don’t think like a naturally thin woman. This book explained how my brain-body connection can be radically adjusted so that I, like a naturally thin woman, can joyfully eat for pleasure and nutrition without fear of overeating or needing food for comfort, reward, or sedation. "The Thin Woman's Brain" is about the rewiring process, not the simply the mechanics of mindful eating. This book is NOT a one-trick-pony. Yes, mindfulness is discussed as one of many tools and behaviours to help achieve the rewiring, but it is only one element of a comprehensive, scientifically-based behavioural training program.
I have barely begun to synthesize and practice the methods set out in this book and I am already experiencing a great deal less anxiety about food and eating, as well as new-found confidence in my ability to successfully take off, and keep off, my excess weight. I have also purchased the Kindle version as I know I will be reading and re-reading sections of this book many times over. This is no quick-fix, lose 10 pounds in a week nonsense – the concepts in this book are the real deal.
Buy this book in audio and print, read it twice, and stop that lose-gain cycle forever. Thanks to Dilia, I now believe it’s possible.

It was just okay for me
Any additional comments?
I'll start by saying that the author does present some good information concerning brain chemistry. That being said, I have several annoyances, and I think I'll make a list to keep me from ranting on and on
1. You will not find a before and after picture of the author ANYWHERE. She may not want to classify this as a diet book, but that's what it is. It's teaching you how to lose weight and keep it off. If it looks like a diet book and sounds like a diet book... I really don't trust a self-help-weight-loss book where the author can't even provide solid evidence through a photograph that it works.
2. The author says at one point that you don't have to use self control to overcome cravings. All you have to do is use mindfulness and acknowledge the craving, but don't give in to it. Um, how is that NOT self control? I tried it, it didn't work. It felt a whole lot like not having self control.
3. The author spends a LOT of time talking about brain chemistry, but ignores one of the most important (in my opinion) things in our brain - serotonin. Serotonin controls HUNGER! I don't really get how the function of dopamine trumps serotonin, but whatever. I was disappointed.
4. The author talks about how important meditation is, but only talks about ONE form of meditation (mindfulness). There are many forms of meditation (yoga, prayer, etc.).
5. The author mentions a few things that all naturally thin women have in common, and one (or more) really irritated me. Naturally thin women don't like the feeling of being too full. Really? Because overweight women just LOVE the feeling of being overly stuffed and bloated? NO. I hate it! Not only do I feel uncomfortable, but I also get a side of feelings of guilt, self hatred, self recrimination, etc. I wonder if naturally thin women have to deal with THAT when they're stuffed? I don't know many people, obese or thin, that like that feeling. The point is, we do it because there are other things going on in our brain.
6. I think the title of this book is misleading. The only scientific comparison between a thin person and obese person is showing the dopamine levels in the two brains after eating. The rest is just her asking her naturally thin women friends questions about their thinking. For me, I already know the difference because I have a naturally thin mother, but that doesn't mean I can do what she does, since my brain chemistry is different than hers.
In summary, this book does provide some good information, but it may not give you the full answer to the weight problem that you might be looking for. I'm really not trying to turn anyone away from purchasing it; I just wanted to air my grievances. It didn't give me the answer I needed, but it gave enough information and the inspiration to go find my own answer. For that, I give the book 3 stars.

Taking willpower out of the equation...
I really liked this book because it explained how to think like a "naturally" thin woman, not a "dieting" thin women. Great concepts that are very convincing in an outline form for you to follow. I think the audiobook is great, however, I'm going to get the written book as well, so that it will be easier to refer back to often.

This was so disappointing!
If I have to hear the words "naturally thin women" again I just might lose it! This book is all about replacing self control with food with self control on techniques that prevent you from needed self control with food! So really nothing changes. You're still needing will power and self control to prevent over eating! I got nothing useful from this book. If you have kids, are busy, or are a normal person, most of the techniques in this book are not realistic. I'll give you the short version of this book... Naturally thin woman are amazing, beautiful, perfect, never over eat, never get full, are not tempted by food, sit in silence and have a bonding moment with their food. Overweight woman love binge eating, love to feel full, eat while distracted, blah blah blah! I'm so disappointed in this book!

Finally--- the end of yo-yo dieting!
I'm a 26 year old woman who has struggled with my weight since I was in single digits. I'm addicted to food, and I've been yo-yo dieting--my weight on a non-stop rollercoaster--- for YEARS.
This book is the first one I've found (and there have been many I've tried) that I feel has given me a tangible, sustainable and LOGICAL life approach to END the seemingly endless cycle of diets and setbacks, and get me back to a state of health and well-being... and best of all, repair my relationship with food.
While I first dismissed the concept of mindful eating and meditation as seeming a bit hokey... having put a variety of her strategies into practice has created a shocking difference in my approach to food and eating in a very short amount of time.
Read or listen to this book!! Though, for those of us with crippling impatience, note that she doesn't get into actionable steps until about Chapter 4 or 5... she explains a lot of the science behind it first.
In my first week of following the strategies outlined in this book, I lost a lot of the mindless stuffing-junkfood-in-my-face behaviour that has defined my relationship with food, and have naturally and easily started to lose weight!

Better if you have the actual book
Would you consider the audio edition of The Thin Woman's Brain to be better than the print version?
I think if you were to have either the book or the audio book, go with the book. However, I loved the audio version, it's very convenient to listen to on the bus, or while taking a walk.
Any additional comments?
I think that this book is a good listen if you want to practice eating more intuitively.

Excellent. Get the app too!
This is so much more than a book. Get the app too! It is a step-by-step behavioral guide that is helping me understand my brain and trust my body. The best weight loss book I have ever read
If you could sum up The Thin Woman's Brain in three words, what would they be?
Life Changing, Enlightening and Exciting are the three words I would use to describe this book.
This book is a must read for anyone who has dieted and failed or has been on that diet/regain/diet/regain hamster wheel.
This is truly a discovery of what is at the root of why the dieting approach does not work for many people and how to in effect rewire your brain so it does.
It sounds very "mumbo jumbo" I know, but, it truly is not. Its very scientific and very logical.
Who was your favorite character and why?
the word character doesn't apply to this book so I will state the most interesting points are how different the thin and fat woman's brains react to food, mindfulness and its effects on your eating and your life and CBT and how it can provide solutions
What does Kate Fotopoulos bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Kate is a marvellous narrator, she clearly researched the subject matter and delivers it expertly. She engaged me from the start to the end.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes I did, a profound one. I found the likely cause of why I had been battling with my weight for 35 years and most importantly what I could do to address it
Any additional comments?
I have been following the on-line 21 day program that accompanies this book and I'm about half way through now. I feel entirely in control of what I eat for the first time in my life

Might be the solution I've been looking for!!!
What did you like most about The Thin Woman's Brain?
I have read several book about mindful eating, but by reading this one, I feel that I have finally found something that might actually get me out of the caos that have been controlling my life for years. It is read aloud by a calm, yet fresh voice, and the actualy content is not just borrow information on how to eat mindful as it is spiced with stories.
What did you like best about this story?
That it has given my the feeling that I might actually be able to get my eating habits under control, without livng with chocolate, cake, etc. I has helped me realise that diet are ruining, and I will never, ever go on one again.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
I loved hearing about the author's experience, e.g. her discussions with her naturally thin friend. How naturally thin women don't ban themselves any types of food - they just wait eating it until they are actually hungry. In stead of binging chocolate croissants (example from the book) likes there's no tomorrow.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, and I am actually listening to the second round now.
Any additional comments?
If really wanting to get your eating habits under control, I would recommend also going for the 21-day app that helps you get your food addiction under control.

Very informative but too technical
Very detailed and informative. Brilliantly and soulfully presented by Kate.
At times I was turned off by the degree of detail but it is worth persevering.
Many helpful theories presented some of which will help me frame my future approach.
A refreshing, liberating approach. Thank you Dilia-I would love to see your before and after pictures!

Keep gaining weight after loss? This is for you!
In a moment of desparation I ordered this audio book. All my life I have known that to conquer an eating disorder was not just about eating right. "Something has to happen in my brain" I kept saying to dieticians and psychologists.
This book has opened a window in my brain; introduced a fresh breeze of an approach and thereby a tangible hope of conquering a life-long self-harm addiction. The approach may not be "the answer" for everyone, but I dare to think after 4 months of listening to this book and installing and acting on the knowledge held in it, that I have been handed the key that I have searched for since I was a child. I am bent on completely "re-wiring my brain".
The book is simply and clearly read. It holds results of scientific research being done on obesity caused by food/eating related addiction (along with other addictions); it describes cause and effect; moves onto approaches of how to adjust the brain's responses to triggers; what to do about triggers; some tips and tricks and so much more.
For someone who does not want to just control what they eat to lose weight, always with the thought at the back of their head that the weight will be gained again when the control slips. For someone who wants to be free of this repetative cycle of defeat and really have a brain that thinks the way a naturally thin woman's brain does about food and appetite. I would suggest listening to this book now.

Simple and Powerful
Would you consider the audio edition of The Thin Woman's Brain to be better than the print version?
Haven't read the print version.
What did you like best about this story?
This book is simply amazing. No fluff, no gimmicks and no b.s. If you seriously want to get to your healthy weight, here are the intelligent and compassionate tools you'll need. In short, you'll learn to eat mindfully in order to nourish your body instead of trying to fill your emotional needs with food. If you're tired of diets and all the hype/let downs that goes with them, then you must try this gentle and fun process of change.
What about Kate Fotopoulos’s performance did you like?
Kate Fotopoulos's performance is great. She manages to present hard, factual information in a spellbinding manner.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This book opened my eyes and made me realize that being overweight doesn't mean I'm a flawed person! It just means that my brain chemistry isn't working optimally and that I can fix it by making simple, gentle behavior changes. I can't say enough how grateful I am for Dilia's groundbreaking work. I've been set free from the eternal dieting trap forever!

Annoying narrator
The narrator has a horrible habit of adopting a gravelly voice at the end of every sentence. It's slightly less irritating if you listen at 1.25x speed. I couldn't concentrate on contents of book.

Brilliant book
Anyone else want to do a really childish "ooo the naturally thin woman...na nana na na...!" throughout this book?haha. I really loved it, I have had an eating disorder in the past and this has really helped me understand things about my relationship with food that I didn't cover during previous therapy. I really recommend this for anyone who uses food as way to modify emotions in any way.

A great book that really spoke to me
This book really spoke to me and my 'neural pathways'. The narrator has a very pleasant and informative voice, easy to listen to and take in information. I clicked on the title initially as it piqued my interest and I wasn't expecting much, just another quick fix. However I was pleasantly surprised that this book is very relevant, up to date and refers to plenty of research. I have read many books on emotional eating but don't feel that I can relate to any of them. This book just made sense to me. Using the latest science of neuroscience, it is very up to date and made me realise maybe it wasn't this mystery emotion or feeling I was supposedly suppressing (as other books said) but more the pathways in the brain, the well worn paths and the fact that sugar and certain foods light up the reward and pleasure centres of the brain. I have found myself with quite some bad habits and this book made me realise I can choose healthy food and enjoy it. The more you try to be healthy, the more the neural pathways in the brain will set. I have the kindle and audible version. It is also shorter than most books which means I actually got through it all (7.5hours) but it is all relevant and succinct, and gets to the point quite quickly without going on an on. I think the title appeals to those looking for a quick fix but offers so much quality and science that you would expect from that title. It is not a diet book, it helps you to understand your brain, pleasure centres and also that it is not your fault. Highly recommended.

Very good book but outdated diabetes info
Excellent for getting to the root cause. I highly recommended it. Offers great science and statistics and an abundance of techniques to rewire the brain. My only critism being it hasn't got the clearest reasearch on diabetes. I recommend this book in conjunction with Dr Gregger 'How not to Die' and 'How not to diet'. These books have the biggest reasearch team behind them in scientific studies on the effects of food on health. I lost the majority of my weight following Dr Gregger and this book helped me maintain that weight through its suggestions. I'd say these three books are the triad bible of weight loss.

Stick to Corporate Analysis and leave diet alone
The author is certainly passionate about her cause however much of the information is outdated and there are far better reads on weight loss out there. After reading Jason Fung's The Obesity Code, which is now my benchmark for a book on this such topic, I found The Thin Woman's Brain to be lacking in holding my interest and in providing good easy to follow instructions. I did persevere until the very end however it was difficult at times. The part that really irked me was the very outdated information provided on Insulin Resistance.
On a positive note however, I gave the book 2 stars overall as it has instigated positive changes in me when it comes to including Mediation as part of a holistic approach to health and weight management.
Readers perhaps skip this one if you are looking for the inspirational read to inspire changes in you.

Goes into Emotional causes for weight gain
It outlines the effect that mindfulness has on weightloss and the role that mindlessness plays in getting fat.
It talks in depth about the cycle of shame and how we (as food addicts) are as much addicted to the cycle of shame as we are to the food.
This book briefly analysed the types of personalities that are prone to food addictions and how these personality types deal with issues.
She goes into how to break the hold that certain foods have in your life through exposure therapy.
Its a good read on the psychology that surrounds food addiction and answers the question why do I keep getting fat even though I'm working so hard to stay thin?

Relatable and effective
An excellent book. It is working for me. I recommend it to anyone struggling with their weight. The author's story is relatable and the recommendations actionable and based on science. I've read books on CBT and neuroplasticity before; this book simplifies the messages and activities that help rewire your unconscious brain. The narrator is really soothing to listen to as well.

This book has literally changed my mindset
Hopefully it changes my life too. I have never related to a book so much. First time I was like. Wow this is amazing. Second listen. It started to sink in more and more. I’m about to do a third time. I have so many issues it will take a while. But this book is the only thing I’ve read that actually makes sense! Reducing the guilt. Identifying the mind hunger. Understanding how I got here and acknowledging that I wasn’t always this way gives me hope.
