Publisher's Summary

For all of Jack Aubrey's life he has triumphed, often sensationally, over the dangers of the sea and the violence of the enemy. But his rashness and his indiscretion have time and time again enabled his rivals to prevent him reaping his just rewards.

The nadir was reached in The Reverse of the Medal when, the victim of a skilful frame-up, he was convicted of fraud and struck off the Navy list just as he was coming within sight of flag rank. The subsequent exposure of the conspiracy, coupled with his brilliant success in command of a privateer, had brought him to a position where Their Lordships were more or less bound to reinstate him.

This, as the present story opens, they have done, and he and his old friend Dr Maturin are sailing on a secret mission with a hand-picked crew, most of them shipmates from the adventures and lucrative voyages of earlier years....

Weakest of the series

Perhaps because little or no warfare and more “intelligence” and character development on the awful “Fox” but I thought this was easily the least engaging of the series. Perhaps O’Brian had simply lost his mojo 😢

Superb writing outstanding reader

I had read Master&Commander and seen the terrible film. From my initial listening to Ric Jerrom’s vibrant performance of the first book I was totally hooked and am about to start the 8th in the series. O’Brian is an outstanding writer but I was never immersed and involved when hearing his words in my head. His work, whether details of running a ship of the line, sea battles, the characters, history, can only be appreciated when read by Ric Jerrom. His talent is extraordinary and mesmeric. I will be very sad when I’ve completed the series but will move on to anything read by Ric Jerrom.

Great for depression.

Whenever I'm feeling down or depressed, I listen to jack and Stephens adventures and then I feel better. I love these books. The performance of Ric in, my opinion, is perfect.

superb!

brilliant as always. great story of both sea and land, set in far flung islands. complex characters, convoluted politics, much natural history, written with o'Brian's trademark eye for detail. fabulous!

A break in the action

A lull in the storm with no ships of the perfidious enemy sunk. Perfect lockdown listen.

The first act of an unfinished tale

The story has problems until you realise that it's really just the first act of the next book in the series. Even so, there are several dissatisfying aspects, such as the author's habit of resolving very important plot points "off stage" and then telling us about them afterwards. This can be extremely anticlimactic. There is alsoastro g sense of a "day in the life" - the story meanders as the characters experience various things, which are all interesting, but not necessarily relevant to the story. Enjoy it, then move on to the second act, the next book where, hopefully, the story telling will be a little more focused!

Read the first ten and listening to the rest

I think Ric Jerrom reads them better than me. Really enjoying his performance. Some people don't like the detail and pace of the series but i do, and even better read to me.
