Publisher's Summary

The Sunday Times number one best seller, from the author of Cloud Atlas and The Bone Clocks.

Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2010.

Be transported to a place like no other: a tiny, man-made island in the bay of Nagasaki, for 200 years the sole gateway between Japan and the West. Here, in the dying days of the 18th century, a young Dutch clerk arrives to make his fortune. Instead he loses his heart.

Step onto the streets of Dejima and mingle with scheming traders, spies, interpreters, servants and concubines as two cultures converge. In a tale of integrity and corruption, passion and power, the key is control - of riches and minds and over death itself.

Rubbish

Narration was good.
But that's all I can say about this book.
The story was weak and too much time was wasted on the back stories of the other characters. All in all I would not recommend and am disappointed.

A Beautiful Moving Piece of Historic Art

This was an impactfull story, it left me in awe and melancholic about life in general. Beautifully written. Bringing forward a historically accurate time, now passed. A Jewel on the shelf.

Awful narrator

Awful (male) narrator. Completely ruins the book - I had to give up in chapter 1

One of Mitchell’s most masterful

Mitchell is a masterful writer and in this he surpasses even himself. A few slow parts in the narrative that then take shocking revelations and make the reader’s investment well worthwhile!

Dull

Didn't bother to finish as too dull and had no interest in any of the characters or the story, although not sure there was a story

masterpiece I was there , an exhilerated observer

as the characters were magically brought to life , I felt shocked , awestruck and excited . The rythmn of the writing and narration took me to a Japan I did not know , yet brought great understandings into the cultures of times past . There is always something in David's books that brings deeper meaning .
