Take the Long Road Home...the Best Audible

Would you listen to The Three Musketeers again? Why?

Not only a re listen but the stimulus to a listen to all of Dumas with the COUNT having the slight edge. This is captivating, humorous, luminous, intriguing. This is 21st century writing in the guise of the 17thC court. These are heroes, villains and a wonderful stew of retribution in every shade. This is not a kid's book, this is not your GrandMa's Dumas, this is not stodge. This is joy, laugh out loud and yelling from the top row: 'Get the villain...watch out'.

What other book might you compare The Three Musketeers to and why?

The Count of Monte Cristo has a sharper edge and plot line with a single protagonist and a singular path to revenge BUT the Musketeers are droll, driven by honor and seduction and never failing in their devotion.

Which scene was your favorite?

There is a wonderful, conflicted attempt of D'Artagnon to save the reputation of Anne of Austria; Queen of France and lover of the Duke of Buckingham. Beware of starting this section at midnight as your partner will see the light burn for the next hours

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laughter, guffaws, belly cries and the reduction of any desire to ever 'get even'

Bill Homework amazing narrator!

This is an amazing book but even more so because of the narration by Bill Homewood. He adds an element that enhances my imagination. I love to read but I specifically sought out work narrated by Bill Homewood after listening to his superb performance in The Count of Monte Cristo. He bring the characters to life and evokes such emotion, he never sounds robotic like some monotone narrators. This one is a must! Enjoy!!

Great book.

There is a part towards the end where it gets REALLY slow and I know there was some interesting bits but for about an hour or maybe two it kinda drags when it could of been better. But I loved the story it was my first time through it.

Great on so many levels!

Bill Homewood reading any of Dumas' stories has been a pleasure to listen any time, and I'm on my third listen through this, alternated by Mr. Homewood's superb narration of the Count of Monte Cristo.

Each time I appreciate more and more his way of taking the listener back into the centuries these stories were based on, combining the way Dumas' contemporary readers might have read through his humor, or social and political ideas, many of which would be totally alien to our own times in general.

It's wonderful. I do wish to listen with Bill Homewood to all 5 of the series someday, but it's more than satisfactory for now to hear his interpretation of the characters in their relative youths in this first story.

One of the true classics!

Will take the reader /listeners well beyond the pop culture/movie view of the 3 musketeers, their characters and the time they lived in through the authors view approx 200 years after this fictionalized account of royal intrigues were to have taken place (1600s). Neither the main characters, nor time period were what id thought they would be.

Mixture of fact and fiction make for an interesting tale that kept my attention throughout.

At around 25 hr listening time, it does take a while to finish - but definitely worth it.

Dumas never disappoints!

Fabulous characters. Wonderful adventure. Classic Dumas. Compelling story with a performance that manages to give voice to each character in his or her own accent/dialect thus making the story come to life. Absolutely recommend for males and females of all ages. The Three Muskateers hasn't lost its flavor through the course of time. It's appeal is universal. I thoroughly enjoyed this Audible book.

Not my favorite Dumas story or audio book

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I'd listen to a different Dumas story. I really liked The Count of Monte Cristo narrated by Andrew Timothy.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

It was hard to follow the narrator and the story was not nearly as action packed or interesting as I expected.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I really enjoyed the action packed movies. This story was much less interesting.

Ye Olde Beach Read

Don’t get me wrong, Père Dumas is great. It’s just that The Three Musketeers is a plot driven novel; not a character driven one. Full of thrilling adventure, passion and intrigue, but not much depth to the characters. Lots of escapist fun though, like a super hero movie.

That being said this narrator is GREAT. He really brings the story to life. His voice is perfect for Dumas’s style of writing. He brings in the drama and the passion (I hesitate to say ‘emotion’ since every emotion the characters feel in this story seems to boil down to “passion”) but doesn’t become the narrator’s equivalent of a lounge singer. He did a fantastic job with the Count of Monte Cristo as well.

A level of genius unsurpassed.

There are some things in life that I have experienced that force me to reflect on how boundlessly fortunate I am. I have swam around a beautiful coral reef and witnessed beauty that words cannot describe. I have shared unforgettable moments with friends in spectacular settings. I have married the girl of my dreams. I have reconnected with my father in a world of love that did not know existed. I have listened to music that resonated with my soul so much as to make me weep. And, I have listened to this audiobook.
Impeccably written, masterfully narrated.
Thank you for human genius.

Couldn't get through it. hated the narrator.

What disappointed you about The Three Musketeers?

I had loved the Count of Monte Christo and thought I'd try another of Dumas' classics. It was a mistake

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Bill Homewood?

I'm afraid I didn't like his overly dramatic voice which is bouncy with enthusiasm in a way I found irritating.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Sorry but I couldn't get past the voice.

Great story, great performance.

Like The Count of Monte Cristo it's a long book but it just pulls you along so you just burn through it. Bill Homewood does an excellent job playing so many characters so convincingly, especially switching between the female characters so effortlessly, I needed to double check it wasn't in fact a cast of a dozen performers. I will continue to look for more of his narrations. The Count is still my number one book, but this rendition really pushes it.

Bill Homewood is a great narrator

The Three Musketeers is a proven classic, a masterpiece. Bill Homewood makes the experience very enjoyable and enduring. I first heard him read Montecristo and will continue to listen to all he has read, he is that good.

Humour and intrigues

Loved the humour of this book, very different to the Count of Monte Cristo. At times hilarious with the adventures D'Artagnan contrasted with the sinister behaviour of the protagonist and sad demise of several characters. Ripping good read.
