As he did so masterfully in his New York Times best seller The Gatekeepers, Jacques Steinberg creates a compelling portrait of people obsessed with reaching a life-defining goal. In this instance, the target is an Ironman triathlon---a 2.4-mile open-water swim followed by a 112-mile bike ride, then finally a 26-mile marathon run, all of which must be completed in no more than seventeen hours. Steinberg focuses not on the professional who live off the prize money and sponsorships, but on a handful of triathletes who regard the sport as a hobby.

Triathlon Running Foundations provides the specific information athletes need in order to feel strong for every step of the run, all the way to the finish.

A complete understanding, not a plan.
If you’re looking for an easy to follow triathlon training plan, this is not it.
If you want to understand the reasons behind building a plan, and understand how much work actually goes into being a coach, than this book is for you. It’s a lot of information, but if read actively with an effort placed towards understanding and retaining what you have read, you’ll learn how to develop an effective training plan for yourself and maybe even others.
Most importantly, you’ll understand WHY you’re doing something vs something else, which in my opinion is far more important for the serious athlete.
Highly recommend.

Narration was awful.
This book probably had a huge potential for an audio book... but man did it fall short. Narration was so monotone it was like listening to nails on a chalk board throughout the entirety.. read it, might be a better fit..

Not a training “Bible”
Book introduction mentions being for advanced athletes, it’s not. It’s more an introduction to the sport that broadly explains notions as aerobic and anaerobic systems and gives training session examples. While there’s some interesting parts for those who start, the book can’t claim being a bible since there’s way more info out there and some chapters forget some info that would be quite useful to triathlete. I encourage to read other books to complement (especially for the running section).

Author recommendation is 3yrs a Triathlete
It was useful, but it is way over my head for the majority of the book.
In the beginning it was recommended to that this be useful for an advanced-level triathlete (Friel says thats a 3 year veteran). I am just now considering triathlons and only look to "wet my feet" with the subject. So It is probably a valuable tool, but probably more-so for someone else.
Unfortunately, I have to return it. BUT I will probably be back!

accompanying pdf disappoints
the training principles are explained in a diligent manner. however the accompanying pdf is a disappointment as it lacks a very important element in my opinion which are the workout appendices. this means that to get the complete understanding the book offers you need to actually buy the book and cannot settle with the audiobook. this is very frustrating.
