Publisher's Summary

What would happen if you admitted you weren't a good person?

It's a seemingly crazy question. From priests to prisoners, nearly everyone thinks they're morally better than average. Why change our minds? Why admit the truth about ourselves?

In his conversational and delightfully self-effacing style, Brant Hansen shows us why we should fight our drive to be self-righteous: it's breathtakingly freeing. What's more, just admitting that we're profoundly biased toward ourselves and want desperately to preserve our rightness at all costs even helps us think better, make better decisions, be better listeners, and improve our relationships with God and others.

Hansen draws from biblical insight and the work of everyone from esteemed social psychologists to comedians to make his point: the sooner we get over ourselves, give up the I'm good internal dialogue, and admit the truth, the sooner we can live a more lighthearted, fruitful, fun-loving life. After all, as Hansen writes, the humble life is truly your best one.

Life changing

Learning to accept that I don't have the answers, I don't truly know my own motives, and that we all have a love/hate relationship with ourselves has really helped me up lighten up, love others without questioning their motives, and truly understand that people's "goodness" isn't what matters - I'm not good. No one is. That's a heavy burden to finally get rid of.
God's goodness is what matters. This book reminded me of that.
When I'm able to rest in His goodness, I take the pressure off myself. And, possibly more importantly, off of others.
The cross leveled the playing field! Thank you Jesus!

Best Book on Humility

I love Brant Hansen! His perspective and ability to make very confused topics like humility easier to understand and empower people like me to grasp the subject more. I don’t feel so lost or confused about it. I grew up in church with the knowledge that I was not a good person so I should hate myself but I can’t love anyone else if I don’t love myself. This confused me my whole life! Now I’m understanding this much more and about to listen to this book again. Brant Hansen is my favorite author ever! His books are so impactful because he is so practical. I can’t recommend Brant enough!

Life-Changing

Brant Hansen has a way of telling us what almost all of us need to hear, but in a way that is easy to accept, even enjoyable. It's one of those books we want to tell all of our friends about. I'm sure we are better people for having read it.

The Truth About Us

Brant Hansen does it again. Both being open, transparent and willing to be used by God to convict me of pride & denial which is helping me become humble. Then there is the clarity and humor he uses to deploy these hard hitting truths. Thank you God for this talented author.
