Story
Detective Sergeant Chris Waters got the call at 05.29 that July morning. This is it, said DCI Reeve, you'll be first there, it's all yours, you're the crime scene manager. Suddenly, after months of waiting and wondering, Waters finds himself in at the deep end, and alone at the scene of a puzzling murder. As the investigation proceeds, the detectives at Kings Lake Central find themselves visiting familiar places and talking to some familiar faces, while old enmities reappear in the incident room. Before this is over, Chris Waters will need to make a career-changing decision.

Spring, 1921. Scotland Yard sends Inspector Ian Rutledge to the sea-battered village of Walmer on the coast of Essex, where amongst the salt flats and a military airfield lies Benton Abbey, a grand manor with a storied past. The lady of the house may prove his most bewildering witness yet. She claims she saw a violent murder—but there is no body, no blood. She also insists she recognized the killer: Captain Nelson. Story
On Christmas Eve, DCI Mackenzie Jones is called to a shooting at a remote farmhouse. Ralph Mallender believes his father lies dead inside. When three more bodies are discovered, it's clear a festive family gathering has turned into a gruesome tragedy. At first it seems like an open and shut case: a murder suicide committed by Ralph's volatile brother Cameron. One of the best birders in England, Tom had put the village of Rushy on the birdwatching map. Everyone liked him. Or did they? George Palmer-Jones, an elderly birdwatcher who decided quietly to look into the brutal crime, discovered mixed feelings aplenty. Grainger and Jackson have honed DC into a masterpiece!
I have been a fan of Peter Grainger since the beginning of DC’s exploits. I have all of them in kindle and audio versions and revisit them often. No one else but Jackson can play him and this book is, I think, Jackson’s finest performance in the series. Pure Smith this time with pertinent smatterings of the rest of the crew. Grainger has masterfully steered Smith into new and enduring territory and it’s great stuff. Carry on I say and get on with it! I can’t wait all year!!!

Another superb story by the masterful Peter Grainger wish perfect narration by the incomparable GildartJackson
Peter Grainger never disappoints. I am so thankful for this fabulous series. Wonderful complex characters, engrossing complicated storylines that both entertain and educate. These books are favorites that I listen to -or read - again and again.
While I enjoy both the Kindle and audible versions, the delight of the audible versions is truly remarkable. Mr. Jackson’s reading of these novels brings them vividly to life, capturing the humor, the intelligence and the drama with exceptional skill and nuance. Bravo to brilliant author and extraordinary narrator.

So good to have DC back!
I’ve enjoyed the Kings Lake Investigations books in the meantime, but there’s no doubt that DC is the godfather of them all. The narrator delivers the deliberate and sardonic character of the protagonist so well, I could believe he is DC. I hope there will be more!

Fabulous!
I loved this! But I love DC and this entire series. Even though his former colleagues make cameo appearances, DC is the focus of this latest by Peter Grainger. The intelligence of these books together with the dry wit combine to form a terrific read. Gildart Jackson’s narration makes it an excellent listen.

Once again, an excellent read and sorry I’ve finished it. I’ve read all of Peter Grainger’s books and would strongly recommend reading them in order as you get to know the characters well. Also he refers back to past episodes, so it adds to the enjoyment. Excellent characters and settings that can easily be imagined also add to the pleasure of these books, as well as good plots. The reader is one of my three favourite at all times and I have listened to hundreds. Highly recommended.

If you have not read/listened to any of the previous DC Smith books (I highly recommend you do) the beginning of this book is a little slow but persist as it gets really in to, how will DC get on without him being able to get back up. Will this be the start of a new career for him and not just a one off? Well DC fans will say yes we hope so. Can't wait for the next book and the next book in the Lake series too.
