Publisher's Summary

I'm learning to embrace who and what I am, but there's one thing I can't face: the night Zak betrayed me. But even with the mysteries of our shared past hanging between us, I can't turn Zak away when he asks for my help.

Powerful fae are going missing, and when he tried to investigate, Lallakai vanished too. Now he wants me to venture with him into the territory of the Shadow Court, but its bloodthirsty courtiers don't welcome meddling druids.

Danger is gathering around us, seen and unseen. As we uncover incomprehensible clues about the missing fae, we realize this nightmare runs deeper than we imagined, and unveiling it means delving into the past-our past.

If I abandon Zak now, he'll never make it out alive. But if I stay at his side, if I face the truth of that night, it will destroy us both.

Cliffhanger alert

The book was pretty good. But had I known it was going to end on a cliffhanger I would’ve just waited till the final book. I hate when authors do that.

Great narrators, cliche ending

A fair addition to the series, but the ending was very cliche. It left a good amount to be desired in my mind. I will obtain the next book in the series, when it comes out, because i am invested in the universe from Tori's books, robin's aadventures, to Kit's unorthodox actions... but am feeling a little meh, or lacklustre currently.

AWESOME!!!

The ending of this book gave me chills. I only hope that this is the beginning of a set of books that includes all of the characters in the Guild Codex. I can't wait to see what happens next.

4.5 Stars 🌟

I wasn't sure if it was going to be possible, but it has happened. I seem to have thawed somewhat with the female MC of this series - Saber. She is definitely NOT my favorite character from the Guild series, but somewhere along the way, she stopped annoying me so much. Because of that, I really enjoyed this book so much more than the prior two. Granted, the story is also taking off and lots of things are happening....so there is that.

Since the first book in this series, we discovered that Saber and Zak had a history and boy oh boy was that NOT a good history. Unfortunately, at the time (10 years ago) they were both teenagers in impossible situations and they also never exchanged names so it IS plausible that they could have gone all this time without crossing paths. Even knowing the outcome of the events 10 years ago - we were not given any of the details. That information was REALLY given out slowly.

Well...FINALLY we get to find out EXACTLY what happened then. Honestly, it made me kind of sad because as usual, most of the collateral came from miscommunication (doesn't it always?) but there was still some fault. (I'm not going into spoilers on that - you need to read it)

So that was a big part of this book. There was also the progression of the current story arc which deals with the issue that Zak has gotten himself involved with. There is drama, action, tension and then at the end....some bats**t craziness going on. Someone becomes a power hungry crazy person....

Bottom line - the next book - the finale of the Zak and Saber arc is going to be a doozy.

Can't wait!

always enjoyable, this tale never disappoints

as I prepared to clean out the garage I started this story and it helped me pass the time reasonably. fully enjoyable storyline over several books.

I was concerned I needed to relisten to the prior books last chapter but luckily this one had a summary from a differing vantage point.

strength, power, giving, taking, health and illness all couched in powerfully entertaining methodologies.

shadow of a good story

TLDR: you can skipp this one, it has an exelent start (incidentaly the bit you get a sample of) but the rest of the book is generic drivel FAR below Anette Maries usually high standards what cud have been a complex plot staring for once mainly fey charakters and maybe some other Spiritalis mythics turns out to instead be a generic double betrayal mixed with fetch quest. the only real result of this is that Zac is now a AA battery and Lolakai is Sylvanas from world of Warcraft but somehow less compelling while nicking Rykers tension-defusing OP reincarnation power. anny newly introduced charakter either does not matter or is killed off during the book, most of the fey are not the enigmatic strange creatures you find elsevere in this setting only ever showing powers seen elsevere and motives with exactly 1 dimention. hekk the "queen of death" is basikly (old/better) Lolakai but without the wings being relegated to little more than a mc-guffin witch occasionally makes sounds. but hey, at least they got 2 VA's? thoue they voice separate chapters instead of charakters leaving them stil short of the lofty heights of the Cain (40k) books do not waste your time. credits or money on this one. you can access something like half of its good part in the prewiev

Lost the Rhythm at the end

Started well and flowed with great synergy,
Peppered with Zac's origin story made for a great listen. Then for no apparent reason, some of the most experienced, skilled and capable characters became completely flaccid and incompetent. This has laid the foundations for what I fear will be a very predictable final book.

Narration as always was great.

Now, just listening out of loyalty to the brand.

Great Character Arc. Terrible Ending.

I really like this series. It’s a bit darker than the other Guild Codex stories. In this one, we learn a lot more about Zac and Saber. Lots of questions are answered. But what happened to the ending??? It feels like it ends at the climax. I HATE when that happens! I need the next book immediately!!! Everyone involved in this series must drop everything else they are doing right now and release the next instalment as soon as is humanly possible. Aaargh!
