Spot on.

If you’re a beginner or intermediate level musician - definitely take the hour or so to listen to this. Then listen again and take notes, writing down the details of the stuff you want to execute. This book goes over some great stuff, gives you some hacks, and just really gives it to you straight. Everything he says is, in my opinion, totally correct and important to know. He also gives some real-world advice about the industry that people won’t usually divulge.

Ive been on the industry for 15 years and although i know about all the technical info he touches there were a lot of things he said that made me look at stuff a different way. I love a new perspective i hadn’t previously considered. I do wish there was a longer version of this or if he taught a class, I’d definitely enroll. He’s the kind of guy whose brain id love to just keep picking.

The only note I have is - when it comes to interfaces, go to a website like sweetwater, AMS, or zounds- and spend a little more on an UA Apollo. I think he should’ve mentioned both those sales outlets (which let you pay in 3-6 payments without credit check), and the table top Universal Audio Interfaces, along with why/how/if using plug-ins pre-daw is helpful.

Anyway, get this, you’ll like it no matter what your level of expertise.

Best book ever

This book has dispelled all my confusion around the topic, easily the best book I could have ever imagined to exist about music production. I knew roughly the main things I need to have and do when producing music, but not a complete and simple overview of that work. Great job. Full five stars from me!

One of the most likable and useful books for computer musicians

Compare this with Ari’s Take—yes, it’s smart, but is the size of Moby Dick and mostly recommends fairly expensive gear. This will give you easy to follow advice to improve your craft first. You’ll narrow down your to-do list and proceed with confidence.

To the point!

I’m very impressed with this title, as it does exactly what it says on the tin, without the unnecessary fluff and tons of theory. The author expertly draws on his own wealth of experience on how to start producing music, create excellent albums and provide super quality product on low budget. The most important piece advice for me was how to find your own style and what to do when you’re not sure what kind of music you want to produce, how to learn from others, accept feedback and be open to accepting change. Cole is really helpful giving you tips on how to start on your own, which pieces of hardware purchase, where to find clients and how to become an artist yourself. Each chapter has a short summary and review for you to use to asses yourself, see where you are, and then move on to the next one.

Invaluable amount of knowledge and value condensed into a very short audiobook, it’s truly impressive! Would definitely recommend to any aspiring young musician, wannabe producer.

Made my first beat

I have always wanted to mess around with producing music, but I felt so intimidated by it. Now I am making beats left and right. I finally feel like my dream is going to come true. Alec Cole is the perfect teacher. He breaks things down and explains them in a way that many other so called "gurus" can't. I feel a personal connection with him through this book and can't wait for his next one.

Great listen

Simple and easy to understand. The author has done a great job in putting this together. It teaches us what equipments which require along with producing tips and advice.
I must add, I would’ve preferred if the author attached a PDF so we can read along as we listen.

From A - Z!

As a lover of music and entertaining, my husband and I have always wanted to learn how to do our own mixing - to make our parties that much more fun & authentic :) Whilst this may not be a career for us, we found "the seven items you need" really insightful. The mixing techniques as well as the free plugins shared make this audiobook a real winner!

Pursue your music producer dream!

Have you thought about producing music but don't know how to start? This book is for you! Growing up in an Asian community, pursuing career in creative is something we rarely heard of. I know a friend who was a talented musician but decided to give up his music dream to pursue the more "conventional" career. Listening to this book reminds me of the time when my friend was telling me that he would be majoring in science instead of music. I wish he had listened to this book and maybe it would help convince him that producing music is a feasible dream, especially chapter6 "Tackling the Lifestyle". Being a music producer can be a long road before you can start making a living. It can also be a lonely road. I love the honesty of Alec Cole about the lifestyle and words of encourage. Overall, this book lays a solid foundation for new music producer, educating them on what equipment they would need, what type of music they want to create, and the different way to produce music.
